Abstract: In this work, we study the nonlinear oscillations of mechanical systems resting on a (unilateral) elastic substrate reacting in compression only.We consider both semi-infinite cables and semi-infinite beams, subject to a constant distributed load and to a harmonic displacement applied to the finite boundary. Due to the nonlinearity of the substrate, the problem falls in the realm of free-boundary problems, because the position of the points where the system detaches from the substrate, called Touch Down Points (TDP), is not known in advance. By an appropriate change of variables, the problem is transformed into a fixed-boundary problem, which is successively approached by a perturbative expansion method. In order to detect the main mechanical phenomenon, terms up to the second order have to be considered. Two different regimes have been identified in the behaviour of the system, one below (called subcritical) and one above (called supercritical) a certain critical excitation frequency. In the latter, energy is lost by radiation at infinity, while in the former this phenomenon does not occur and various resonances are observed instead; their number depends on the statical configuration around which the system performs nonlinear oscillations.

Control of pull-in dynamics in a nonlinear thermoelastic electrically actuated microbeam

Abstract: This work deals with the problem of controlling the nonlinear dynamics, in general, and the dynamic pull-in, in particular, of an electrically actuated microbeam. A single-well softening model recently proposed by Gottlieb and Champneys [1] is considered, and a control method previously proposed by the authors is applied. The homoclinic bifurcation, which triggers the safe basin erosion eventually leading to pull-in, is considered as the undesired event, and it is shown how appropriate controlling superharmonics added to a reference harmonic excitation succeed in shifting it toward higher excitation amplitudes. The optimization problem is formulated, and the optimal excitation shape is obtained. Extensive numerical simulations aimed at checking the effectiveness of the control method in shifting the erosion of the safe basin are reported. They highlight good performances of the control method also beyond theoretical expectations.

Response scenario and non-smooth features in the nonlinear dynamics of an impacting inverted pendulum

Abstract: In this work, we perform a systematic numerical investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of an inverted pendulum between lateral rebounding barriers. Three different families of considerably variable attractors, periodic, chaotic, and rest positions with subsequent chattering, are found. All of them are investigated in detail, and the response scenario is determined by both bifurcation diagrams and behaviour charts of single attractors, and overall maps. Attention is focused on local and global bifurcations that lead to the attractors-basins metamorphoses. Numerical results show the extreme richness of the dynamical response of the system, which is deemed to be of interest also in view of prospective mechanical applications.

Asymptotic analysis of chattering oscillations for an impacting inverted pendulum

Abstract: The chattering oscillations for an inverted pendulum impacting between lateral walls, a prototype of a class of impact dampers, are analysed. Attention is focused on the periodic chattering appearing when the rest positions cease to be attracting, and the aim is that of computing the time τ required by the micro-oscillations to come to rest. An algorithm is proposed to compute τ , and it is shown how this time depends on the excitation amplitude. When τ becomes equal to the excitation period, the considered chattering is observed to lose attractivity. This occurs for a certain excitation amplitude threshold, which is computed and whose (very weak) dependence on the excitation frequency is illustrated. An asymptotic estimate of the chattering time with respect to a small parameter proportional to the excitation amplitude is given. This is obtained by an appropriate expansion in Taylor series of the relevant quantities involved in the analysis. It is shown that τ is asymptotically proportional to the square root of the excitation amplitude.

The attractor scenario is determined and illustrated by bifurcation diagrams. Attention is focused on local and global, classical and non-classical bifurcations that lead to the attractors-basins metamorphoses, and on the role played by invariant manifolds of appropriate saddles. Our numerical results show that the basins of attraction that appear at a certain critical threshold exhibit fractal nature. We also focus our attention on the onset of the scattered cross-well chaotic attractor.

Identifying, evaluating, and controlling dynamical integrity measures in nonlinear mechanical oscillators

Abstract: The erosion curves for the Helmholtz, the Duffing and rigid block oscillators are constructed to investigate the loss of integrity in different mechanical systems. Various definitions of safe basin and integrity measures are reviewed, compared with each other and applied to the considered cases. A control method aimed at shifting the erosion profiles towards larger excitation amplitudes is considered, too, and its main features are discussed in depth.

Simple analytical models for the J-lay problem

Abstract: This work deals with deep and ultra-deep waters installation by the so-called ‘‘J-Lay’’ method, which consists in laying submarine pipelines with a straight stinger at near-vertical angles. A hierarchy of simple analytical models is proposed starting from the classical catenary and enriching it to overcome its drawbacks. A novel approach for detecting the boundary-layer phenomenon is proposed, and constitutes the base of two of the developed models. All models are compared with each other and with the results of refined numerical simulations in a case of practical interest. In the considered examples the stiffness of the soil has scarce influence, while the boundary layer phenomenon is very important and detected correctly, both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view, by the second class of proposed models.

A unified control framework of the nonregular dynamics of mechanical oscillators

Abstract: A method for controlling non-linear dynamics and chaos based on avoiding homo/heteroclinic bifurcations is considered in a unified framework. Various non-linear oscillators, both hardening and softening, symmetric and asymmetric, considered as archetypes of a more general class of single-d.o.f. systems, are analyzed. The Melnikov's method is applied to analytically detect the homo/heteroclinic bifurcations, and the results are used to select the optimal shape of the excitation permitting the maximum shift of the undesired bifurcations in parameter space. The generic character of the optimization problem is highlighted, and the problem itself is discussed in detail. Various control strategies are proposed, based on the elimination either of a single bifurcation (one-side controls) or of all bifurcations (global control). The optimization problems are solved, analytically and numerically, under various forms, by taking into account the physical admissibility of the related optimal excitation and the easiness of implementation in practical applications. It is shown that the solutions of one-side control problems are always system independent. In turn, the solutions of global control problems are system independent for the large class of (symmetric) systems considered in this work, although there are other systems whose solutions are system dependent. These considerations support the very generic nature of the optimal control.

Abstract: La memoria tratta delle problematiche dell’installazione di condotte sottomarine con il cosiddetto “metodo a J”, che consiste nel varare le condotte stesse con l’ausilio di una rampa quasi verticale. L’attenzione del lavoro viene focalizzata sul rilevamento della posizione relativa tra nave appoggio e punto di contatto della condotta con il fondale marino, che rappresenta un elemento di grande importanza da molti punti di vista: per il tracciamento del percorso di varo prescritto, per l’esecuzione di una installazione sicura ed affidabile e nella determinazione delle massime tensioni/deformazioni, solitamente concentrate nella sezione di massima curvatura, e rappresentanti un parametro di progetto ovviamente fondamentale. Sono considerati modelli analitici e numerici. I primi sono di più facile utilizzo, catturano gli aspetti più importanti del problema e possono essere utilizzati come punto di partenza per algoritmi iterativi di ricerca numerica della soluzione. I modelli numerici, d’altra parte, permettono raffinamenti, specialmente intorno al punto di contatto con il fondo ed alla sezione di massima curvatura e permettono la valutazione della rilevanza relativa dei vari fenomeni meccanici interagenti sullo sfondo.
