Post-World War II Italian school buildings: typical and specific seismic vulnerabilities
JOURNAL OF BUILDING ENGINEERING

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Structures belonging to the same type and built in the same period may share similar geometrical and spatial characteristics. When these features also affect the seismic response of the buildings, they are referred to as typical seismic vulnerabilities. When a building presents one or more of these typical vulnerabilities, some general and qualitative considerations on its seismic behaviour can be made a priori, considering their actual influence on the seismic behaviour of other similar cases. In this work, we propose and apply a specific procedure based on a priori considerations to a specific building type: the post-World War II Italian Schools. To this purpose, we first improved our knowledge about this type of building, pointing out typical and specific seismic vulnerabilities by studying the standard architectural principles suggested by the main manuals and laws of that time. Then, in order to find how these typological features affect the global seismic behaviour of the examined structures, we analysed a real case study representative of the entire building type. Pushover and Nonlinear Dynamic analyses have been carried out, considering four different models, representing three different configurations that may result from different combinations of the most significant typical vulnerabilities.

Vibration-based SHM of ordinary buildings: Detection and quantification of structural damage
Proceedings of the 15th International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers&Informations in Engineering Conference IDECT/CIE 2015

Abstract: One of the most important issues in civil and in mechanical engineering is the detection of structural damages, which are defined as changes of material properties, of boundary conditions and of system connectivity, which adversely affect the system’s performances. The damage identification process generally requires establishing existence, localization, type and intensity of the damage. During its service life, a structure, besides his natural aging, can be subjected to earthquakes. These events may have a deep impact on building safety and a continuous monitoring of the structure health conditions, through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques, is necessary in many cases. Within this a background, the purpose of this work is to propose an integrated novel approach for the diagnosis of structures after a seismic event. The proposed monitoring system is based on recording the accelerations of the real structure during a seismic input, and the reintroduction of them into a numerical model, suitably tuned, in order to outline a possible post-earthquake scenario. This approach provides an estimation of the health of the building and of its residual life, and to detect and quantify the damage, some of the crucial aspects of SHM. Actually, we also get both online and self-diagnosis of the structural health. The technique is applied to a real structure, an industrial building liable of some seismic vulnerabilities. It it did not undergo an earthquake, so we have not recordered accelerations, and get them from a different numerical models subjected to the ground acceleration of a realistic earthquake.

Nonlinear free dynamics of a two-layer composite beam with different boundary conditions
MECCANICA
Autore/i: Lenci, S.; Clementi, F.; Warminski, J.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The nonlinear free vibrations of a two-layer elastic composite beam are investigated. Different boundary conditions, both symmetric and not symmetric with respect to the beam midpoint, equal on both layers and different on each layers, are considered. The analysis is developed by means of the multiple time scale method, and at each order of the asymptotic development, we obtain different information. The first order terms provide the linear natural frequencies. The first, the second and the third natural frequencies are computed explicitly. The next order terms, on the other hand, provide the nonlinearity coefficients measuring the nonlinear amplitude dependence of the natural frequencies, i.e. the curvature of the backbone curve. Both the linear frequencies and the nonlinear coefficients are found to be dependent on two dimensionless parameters only and, for boundary conditions different on each layer, also of the ratio between the axial stiffnesses of each layer.

Nonlinear vibrations of non-uniform beams by the MTS asymptotic expansion method
CONTINUUM MECHANICS AND THERMODYNAMICS
Autore/i: Clementi, F.; Demeio, L.; Mazzilli, C. E. N.; Lenci, S.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The frequency response curves of a non-uniform beam undergoing nonlinear oscillations are determined analytically by the multiple time scale method, which provides approximate, but accurate results. The axial inertia in neglected, and so the equations of motion are statically condensed on the transversal displacement only. The nonlinearity due to the stretching of the axis of the beam is considered. The effects of variable cross-section, of variable material properties and of the distributed axial loading are taken into account in the formulation. They have been illustrated by means of two examples and are also compared with existing results. The main result of this work is that the effects of any type of non-uniformity can be detected by simple formulas.

Dynamic Parameters Identification of Structural Laminated Glass
Proc. of ASME 2015 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition
Autore/i: Clementi, F.; Consolini, L.; Lenci, S.

Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding)
Abstract: In this work, we address experimentally the determination of the dynamical properties, in particular natural frequencies and damping factors, of laminated structural glass. Various specimens, coming from different productions and manufactures, are investigated. Damped free vibrations experiments are performed, where the excitation is provided by an instrumented hammer. The boundary conditions are free-free (the specimens lay on a very flexible sponge substrate). The dynamical characteristics are determined by last squares fitting of time histories, a technique that is very simple, fast and provides very good results. Finally, two theoretical models (a two-layer beam model and a 2D finite element model) are employed to interpret the experimental results.

Abstract: Vitruvius’s Basilica has always been a subject of great interest among academics and archaeologists and it has been investigated by the engineering department of Marche Polytechnic University of Ancona, in partnership with Centro Studi Vitruviani for many years now. Even though the discussion about the text interpretation went on for a long time during the centuries, mainly concerning the shape of the building, on the other hand our interest, due to the technological progress of the last decades, is focused on static and structural features of the only building that Vitruvius drew and built. Thus it was possible to reproduce structural and lighting simulation on a virtual model, following the path of experimental archaeology. In an interdisciplinary perspective and by critically going through the Basilica historiography, this work suggests new reflections about the possibilities that shape, structure and building techniques could finally arrange, unfolding new theories regarding the lacking of findings and the possible demise of the building

Abstract: The LMGC90 code is a discrete element numerical code, which implements the non-smooth contact dynamics method. In this paper, it was applied to the study of the dynamics of the roman arches of Burnum, in Croatia, with two main objectives: (i) to assess the stability of the two preserved arches against seismic events, and (ii) to investigate the causes of the collapse of the major arch, originally adjacent to the two actual arches, which occurred in the seventeenth century. An earthquake and a very strong wind ("bora" wind), as hypothesized by historical sources, have been considered as the two most probable failure causes.

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The reuse of ancient ceramic fragments in Romanesque masonries was a common practice in the Medieval era. A cultural impoverishment of the masonry building art characterized this period. Pre-existing structures were often exploited to build new masonries, both for civil and religious purpose. Starting from these general considerations, a specific construction technique of some Romanesque masonries of the Church of S. Maria in Portuno (Italy) and made by tile and brick fragments, was studied by a multidisciplinary approach. Analyses of the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the original materials (tile and brick fragments, mortars) were carried out by laboratory tests. Furthermore, some wall specimens were reproduced through the same ceramic materials and construction technique of the original masonries. Compression tests were carried out on these wall specimens so as to understand the influence of this construction technique on their compressive strength, Young's modulus, and failure mode. The results allowed increased current knowledge on historical materials and on the mechanical behavior of these specific historical masonries. Useful data obtained by experimental characterization of the materials and walls will also allow to guide future restoration works on these masonries.

Abstract: Non destructive evaluation of plasters on historical thin vaults by scanning laser Doppler vibrometers was attempted in this article. The aim was to investigate the state of conservation of historical plasters hanged from thin light vaults made by plaster and reeds that often carried on their lower surface frescoes and stuccos of high historical, artistic and architectural value. SLDV could represent an effective support for the diagnostic process of these construction system. In particular, the first results underline that processing the data so asto estimate the so-called Operational Deflection Shapes (ODS) does not seem to be helpful as a damage indicator, on the contrary modal analysis seems to be effective in localizing damages present in the specimen.

Abstract: The static and dynamic behavior of a MEMS subjected to thermoelastic and squeeze-film effects is investigated. We analyse the various engineering aspects which interact in a slender fixed–fixed microbeam; major attention is devoted to the modeling of such a multiphysics system, including the mechanical, electrical, thermoelastic and fluid-dynamic properties with their couplings. The static solution is obtained numerically by a finite-difference technique. The variation of the static deflection with respect to the voltage increment, in the presence of geometric nonlinearites, is studied first. Numerical results on the magnitude of thermoelastic damping (TED) and squeeze-film damping are obtained and examined with a parametric analysis. The effect of different relaxation times imposed on the TED, both in pull-in and non pull-in regime, is studied. The squeeze-film damping is modeled by means of the Reynolds equation and the large pressure regime is investigated. We then present a comparison between the different sources of damping, evaluating their relative contribution to the system.

Nonlinear resonances of a semi-infinite cable on a nonlinear elastic foundation
COMMUNICATIONS IN NONLINEAR SCIENCE & NUMERICAL SIMULATION
Autore/i: Demeio, Lucio; Lenci, Stefano
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The Multiple Time Scale (MTS) method is applied to the study of nonlinear resonances of a semi-infinite cable resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation, subject to a constant uniformly distributed load and to a linear viscous damping force. The zero order solution provides the static displacement, which is governed by a nonlinear equation which has been solved in closed form. The first order solution provides the linear resonances, which are seen to be functions of the nonlinearity parameter and of the static displacement at the finite boundary only. Although the first-order governing equation is linear, it has non constant coefficients and cannot be solved in closed form, so that a numerical solution is considered; the eigenfrequencies obtained in this way are also compared with the approximate eigenvalues obtained by the WKB method. At the second order of the MTS expansion, we see that the solution is independent of the intermediate time scale; some additional terms are present, including a time-independent shift of the average position of the oscillations. Finally, the nonlinear frequency–amplitude response curves, which are investigated in detail and which represent the main result of this work, are obtained from the solvability condition at the third order.

Abstract: The Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method (NSCD), implemented in the LMGC90 code, has been applied to the study of the seismic response of a medieval church, the S. Maria in Portuno’s Church at Corinaldo (AN, Italy). According to this model, the church masonry has been modelled as a system of rigid blocks, whose sliding motions are governed by the Signorini’s impenetrability condition and by the dry-friction Coulomb’s law. The NSCD method has proved to be a powerful tool for investigating the dynamics induced by ground seismic accelerations. Indeed the numerical results have given a deep insight into the seismic vulnerability of the church, highlighting several possible failure mechanisms. Moreover, the influence of the friction coefficient, which is related to the quality of the mortar, and the effects of connections between adjacent walls have been investigated.

Abstract: In many historical and monumental Italian buildings, frescoes or stuccoes of artistic and historical value are present on the lower surface of flat light vaults, made by wooden arches, reeds and plaster. These vaults are often suspended by wooden or metallic ties to the upper bearing structures. When differential settlements of the wooden arches happen (i.e.: due to a bad working of their hangings) cracks appear on these precious surfaces. This paper experimentally and numerically investigates on this issue, pointing out which constructive parameters mainly influence the cracking behaviour of the frescoed or stuccoed lower surface, and thus providing guide lines for designing compatible conservation and retrofitting interventions.

Tensile characterization of basalt fiber rods and ropes: A first contribution
CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Basalt is an emerging material, whose use is increasing in constructions and civil applications as an alternative to glass, carbon or aramidic fibers. Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) rods and Basalt Fiber (BF) ropes are going to be used as an alternative to glass, carbon or aramidic fibers for strengthening purposes but few information about their mechanical performances is present in literature and standard test protocols are missing. Thus, this work tries to provide a test protocol for tensile characterization of BF ropes and a validation of the test protocol used for tensile characterization of not-basalt-FRP rods applied on BFRP rods. This is a very important issue from an engineering standpoint in order to evaluate their applicability for architectural heritage retrofitting, as, for example, in repointing (rods), or in innovative techniques, such as the one actually still being tested in our laboratories, that is aimed to strengthen historic masonry (ropes). Experimental test results obtained are shown. Results seem to confirm that BFRP rods and BF ropes could be a good alternative to other similar products.

Abstract: We study the linear dynamics of a layered elastic beam by means of the asymptotic expansion method. The beam consists of three linearly elastic isotropic layers: the middle layer is considered to be thinner and softer than the upper and lower ones. We characterize the limit models by distinguishing three cases of natural frequencies: the low frequencies associated with flexural vibrations, the mean frequencies associated with axial vibrations and the high frequencies, associated with transversal shear and pinching vibrations.

Abstract: The fracture behaviour of unfired dry earth has been investigated by means of an experimental approach supported by some numerical simulations. Three-points bending tests, both with monotonic and cyclic loads, have been performed experimentally, and the related force–displacement diagrams are interpreted theoretically to characterize the fracture parameters of the considered material. Both Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics and a Two Parameter Model are considered. In the latter case, based on the post-peak softening behaviour, the R-curve is determined, which shows how the critical stress intensity factor depends on the fracture length.
