Abstract: In recent years, Italy has been hit by earthquakes, causing significant damage to masonry and reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Especially, common buildings and ordinary structures in many small historical towns of Italian central regions, such as Marche, have suffered dramatic consequences and destruction. Dynamic analysis and seismic structural safety are important topics in civil engineering, which have been studied and deepened for many years by the researchers of the Structural Division of the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, and Architecture of UnivPM. The researches have been oriented towards the investigation of structures under seismic loads in order to improve the knowledge of the structural response under high actions, due to the soil dynamic movements and, thus, define adequate techniques to strengthen the damaged structures. In this paper we present a wide spectrum of main results of our research group, comprising experimental studies, vulnerability analysis and assessment of existing structures, new methods of modelling and theoretical approaches to define the dynamic behavior of structures, also in presence of damage. Finally, we show and discuss new prospects of research for safety, employing advanced techniques and materials to prevent collapse and/or relevant damages in structures.

Abstract: The use of the near surface mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) technique for retrofitting RC beams is a mainstream. Nevertheless, the bond mechanisms of FRP rods between rods and adhesive resin and/or rod–resin with concrete surfaces are not known completely. This paper investigates the experimental bond-slip effects of circular and rectangular carbon-FRP (CFRP) rods inserted in grooves in RC elements through experimental pull-out and bending tests, and using theoretical models. Five RC beams were built and subjected to bending loading; three of the ones strengthened using NSM CFRP rods were subjected to bending until failure. The experimental results showed changes in the response of beams such as stiffness in the elastic phase, reduction of ultimate capacity and ductility due to bond-slip effects. On the other hand, strain measurements on CFRP rods recorded by pull-out tests theoretically valid the linear elastic analysis capable of defining the behavior of CFRP rods before loss of bond. Finally, the comparison between experimental results and theoretical data opens a discussion concerning bond-slip effects in cracked RC beams strengthened with NSM CFRP rods and leads to the definition of actual strain limits for FRP under service loads.

Effects of mortar layers in the delamination of GFRP bonded to historic masonry

Abstract: Externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) used as strengthening for shear historic masonry walls increase tensile capacity so as to support combined compression and high shear forces released during earthquakes. The local and global capacity of FRP strengthened shear walls depends on delamination. This paper deals with the anchorage strength of GFRP strips bonded to historic masonry by analysing results obtained in pull–push shear tests carried out on GFRP-to-historic-brick bonded joints. The experimental research also foresaw the analysis of effects deriving from the presence of mortar layers in actual historic brickwork masonry, simulated through the creation of grooves on the surface of mortar filled clay bricks. The experimental results indicated brittle failure of joints due to delamination; results were processed to evaluate failure load values, strain vs. anchorage length diagrams and shear stress vs. slip relationships experimentally. Finally, the anchorage of GFRP-to-historic-brick was theoretically studied to improve the classic solution by incorporating adherent shear deformation. Discussion on the experimental and theoretical data was developed.

Abstract: The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) for strengthening damaged RC beams has become common practice over recent years. Two methods adopted for repairing or strengthening such beams are FRP plates/sheets glued onto their concrete surface and FRP rods or strips inserted into grooves. This paper investigates experimental vibration monitoring of strengthening according to the two aforementioned methods through dynamic tests on six RC beam models strengthened using carbon FRP. Three beams were strengthened applying CFRP sheets on the tensile cracked surface after loading and three beams were strengthened by near surface mounted (NSM) CFRP rods. The experimental results include both the static tests to create damage and the dynamic tests of strengthened, measuring natural vibration modes and frequency values for free end beams. Comparison between experimental dynamic response and static behavior established that vibration monitoring is a convenient, non-destructive method for assessing strengthened beams under service loads. Further studies and tests must be developed in order to solve the issues that emerged following the analysis of the experimental data obtained.

A reflection on the application of vibration tests for the assessment of cracking in PRC/RC beams

Abstract: Occurrence of cracking damage in a structural, reinforced, concrete element leads to changes in its dynamic response. Nevertheless, the typical non-linear behavior of prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) and reinforced concrete (RC) beams is characterized by cracking, due to the low tensile strength of concrete. It is necessary to take adequate account of cracking effects, in vibration-based monitoring of PRC/RC beams’ structural health, by distinguishing cracking of tensile concrete due to bending moment under service loads; which does not reduce the structural availability of beams although it modifies their dynamic response, from real damage deriving from defects, loss of integrity and cracking due to overloading during service life. This paper deals with cracking effects through an investigation of PRC/RC beam models in real scale, subjected to increasing static loading and natural vibration tests. Degradation of stiffness and development of cracking were related to frequency values measured in a frequency range through vibration tests on free end beams. The results are compared with theoretical values and discussed.

Abstract: External bonding of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) has become a popular technique for strengthening historic masonry wall buildings in seismic area. Although FRPs seem to improve response of historic masonry walls under in-plane shear loading, further investigations must specify a number of aspects for both researchers and practitioners. This paper presents an experimental analysis pertaining to the response of unreinforced and reinforced historic masonry walls built using full clay bricks in scale 1/3rd. On the basis of previous experimental research carried out by shear tests on triplets and unreinforced walls, a shear criterion for historic unreinforced masonry (HURM) has been assumed. In this experimental analysis two HURM walls, characterized by double T shape, were subjected to in-plane cyclic loading to shear cracking. The damaged walls were reinforced using horizontal–vertical and diagonal Carbon FRP strips. An anchorage system was also put into place to improve the adhesion of the strips used; the historic reinforced masonry (HRM) walls were tested by cyclic loading until failure. The experimental results are illustrated and discussed taking into account the delamination failure of the CFRP strips. Finally, the increase obtained in walls’ shear capacity is analysed considering theoretical bilinear diagrams and the coefficient of ductility.

Abstract: Abstract The preservation of the architectural heritage presents one of the important challenges in civil engineering due to the complexity of the geometry of the structures, the variability of the materials used and the loading history of the buildings. This objective increases for existing constructions in the seismic area. External bonding of fiber or, more recently, steel reinforced polymer composites has become a popular technique for strengthening historic monumental masonry buildings. The performance of the interface between composites and masonry is one of the key factors affecting the behaviour of strengthened structures: shear walls, arches and vaults. This paper aims to present the results of an experimental study to evaluate the bond between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) – glass and carbonFRP – and steel reinforced polymer (SRP) with historic masonry: pull–push shear tests on FRP/SRP-to-historic brick bonded joints specimens were carried out. Modes of failure are discussed in detail and analytical results are compared with experimental data. Experimental strains recorded on FRP/SRP strips were processed to evaluate shear–slip laws of tested specimens; energy fracture and failure load values are compared with theoretical values by simplified models for shear stress–slip. Finally, a simple model of FRP/SRP design suitable for practical application to historic masonry is proposed.

Abstract: Abstract Behaviour of RC beams damaged and strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) rods has been experimentally investigated. In this paper, results of static bending and dynamic tests are shown and discussed. Experimental program foresaw that RC beams were damaged by increasing loads to produce different degrees of cracking. The strengthened RC beams using NSM CFRP rods were then subjected to bending with the same loading path and, under increasing load, carried out to failure. The static behaviour of beams has been analysed comparing experimental results with those obtained by a nonlinear theoretical method. Changes in the properties of RC beams such as stiffness and ductility have been studied theoretically. Moreover dynamic response of damaged and strengthened beams has been experimentally investigated such as natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes. Finally, dynamic measures have been taken to validate the strengthening method.
