Abstract: Polyethylene (PE) pipes have been widely used in drinking water distribution systems across the world. In many cases, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is used to maintain a residual disinfectant concentration in potable water. Practical experiences have shown that the lifetime of PE pipes is significantly reduced due to exposure to drinking water with ClO2. Recently, many companies have proposed new PE pipes with a modified formulation, which are more resistant to chlorine dioxide. However, a standardized test method for evaluating the long-term performances of PE pipes is still missing. This literature review was performed to provide a description of chlorine dioxide uses and degradation mechanisms of polyethylene pipes in real water distribution systems. Current accelerated aging methods to evaluate long-term performances of PE pipes exposed to ClO2 are described and discussed along with the common technics used to characterize the specimens. Accelerate aging methods can be distinguished in immersion aging tests and pressurized pipe loop tests. Wide ranges of operational conditions (chlorine dioxide concentration, water pressure, water temperature, etc.) are applied, resulting in a great variety of results. It was concluded that pressurized looping tests applying semi-realistic operational conditions could better replicate the aging mechanisms occurring in service. Despite this, the acceleration and the evaluation of the long-term performance are still difficult to determine precisely. Further experimentation is needed to correlate chemical-mechanical characterization parameters of PE pipes with their lifetime in service.

Long-term evolution of an inner bar at the mouth of a microtidal river

Abstract: We conducted, for the first time, a study of the long-term evolution of an inner mouth bar in a microtidal environment that complements field observations with detailed numerical modelling of the same morphodynamics. Images collected by a video-monitoring station, from 2016 to 2019, were processed to study the evolution of a persistent inner mouth bar formed inside the highly engineered Misa River estuary (Senigallia, Italy) after years of reduced precipitation and discharges. We developed a semi-automatic procedure to detect the emerged area of this deposit. We seek to quantify the relationship between the long-term evolution of the bar and the forcing from the river, waves and tides. The observed high peaks in river discharge caused a strong downriver bar migration (i.e. almost twice the river width). Conversely, the observed sea storms produced an upriver bar migration smaller than one river width. A much slower and weaker (less than half the river width) upriver migration was also observed during periods of large area accretion and due to mild wave climate. Moreover, results showed that the sea water level variation did not directly impact the morphodynamics of the estuary, affecting the emerged portion of the bar only. Numerical simulations, run with Delft3D, were used to complete the information coming from field observations. After some checks on the proper use of the solver for the scenarios and environments of interest, some parametric simulations were run to highlight the role of the different forcing on the bed evolution. Simulations showed, as expected, erosion of the riverbed and significant downriver migrations (four river widths) during peaks of river discharge comparable to the 1-year return period discharges. Numerical results also showed upriver sediment transport when the wave forcing was dominant, with 10-years return period waves inducing an upriver bar migration in the order of one river width. Then, one real-life event was simulated to inspect the interaction of the various forcing and to compare their effects with the observations. Our analysis provides new insight into the complex morphodynamics in a microtidal estuary when weak river discharge is opposed by sea waves driving upriver sediment transport. A more thorough understanding of the morphodynamics is needed for future forecasting of the formation and evolution of sediment deposits inside estuarine channels that can inhibit both navigation and the flux of sediment from the river to the estuary.

How urban layout and pedestrian evacuation behaviours can influence flood risk assessment in riverine historic built environments

Abstract: Riverine Historic Built Environments (HBEs) in urban centres are relevant scenarios for flood risk, due to the compact layout of their outdoor spaces, that are squares and streets, and their position in flood-prone areas. Differences in HBE layout can provide differences in flood risks, but excluding the response of exposed individuals can lead to risk underestimation or overestimation, as for other hazards. This work is a first attempt to compare how accounting or not pedestrian evacuation behaviours can affect flood risk assessment and emergency strategies evaluation. Parametric configurations of typical HBEs are provided on case-studies, and existing tools for hydrodynamic and pedestrian evacuation simulation are applied to them. Risk indexes for the whole HBE (macroscale) and each of its outdoor space (microscale) in it are provided. Results show how the risk indexes trends accounting or not pedestrian evacuation behaviours at the macroscale are similar, while differences at the microscale exist (about 15% in absolute terms). Concerning emergency strategies, sheltering seems to decrease the risk for the whole HBE up to 33% in comparison to leaving the flood-affected area. Results also support where/how to place gathering areas in the HBE.

Abstract: Novel observations of bar features and migration patterns at three Italian sandy beaches in Senigallia (central Adriatic Sea) and Terracina (central Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented. While two of these beaches are unprotected, one is artificially embayed through the presence of a concrete jetty. Bar locations and motions are analysed with video imagery data sets from coastal monitoring stations. Wave climate from the Copernicus oceanographic model is used to correlate hydrodynamics and beach morphology. Clear net offshore migration (NOM) patterns are identified at all beaches, although exhibiting different response scales. At the low-slope beach of Senigallia (mean surf zone slope of 0.009) bars are more sensitive to seasonal changes in wave climate, with offshore shifts in winter and inactivity in summer. Mean annual migration rates of up to 0.26 m/day and 0.09 m/day are observed for outer and inner bars, respectively. No significant response to single storms is observed, except during a single NNE storm. No distinct erosive or accretive trend for the shoreline is evidenced. At the steep beach of Terracina (mean surf zone slope of 0.018), conversely, bars are strongly responsive to single storm events, with displacements of up to 25–50 m across a single storm. The mean inter-annual migration rate is 0.08 m/day for the single/outer bar, whereas a slight onshore trend (-0.02 m/day) for the newborn inner bar is established. The presence of an artificial jetty at the Misa river mouth in Senigallia, finally, leaves the bar system, typically oscillating around an equilibrium position, susceptible to larger seasonal oscillations and strong offshore migration due to two ESE storm events. Numerical simulations of nearshore circulation for two storms from different directions predict the birth of longshore currents, higher ratios of significant wave height to water depth, and stronger bottom orbital velocities over bars in case of the ESE storm, suggesting a greater tendency for offshore-directed sediment transport.

Abstract: Pump-As-Turbine (PAT) technology is a smart solution to produce energy in a sustainable way at small scale, e.g., through its exploitation in classical Water Distribution Networks (WDNs). PAT application may actually represent a suitable solution to obtain both pressure regulation and electrical energy production. This technology enables one to significantly reduce both design and maintenance costs if compared to traditional turbine applications. In this work, the potential hydropower generation was evaluated through laboratory tests focused on the characterization of a pump working in reverse mode, i.e., as a PAT. Both hydrodynamic (pressure and discharge) and mechanical (rotational speed and torque) conditions were varied during the tests, with the aim to identify the most efficient PAT configurations and provide useful hints for possible real-world applications. The experimental findings confirm the good performances of the PAT system, especially when rotational speed and water demand are, respectively, larger than 850 rpm and 8 L/s, thus leading to efficiencies greater than 50%. Such findings were applied to a small municipality, where daily distribution of pressure and discharge were recorded upstream of the local WDN, where a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) is installed. Under the hypothesis of PRV replacement with the tested PAT, three different scenarios were studied, based on the mean recorded water demand and each characterized by specific values of PAT rotational speed. The best performances were observed for the largest tested speeds (1050 and 1250 rpm), which lead to pressure drops smaller than those actually due to the PRV, thus guaranteeing the minimum pressure for users, but also to mechanical powers smaller than 100 W. When a larger mean water demand is assumed, much better performances are reached, especially for large speeds (1250 rpm) that lead to mechanical powers larger than 1 kW combined to head drops a bit larger than those observed using the PRV. A suitable design is thus fundamental for the real-world PAT application.

Abstract: Video-monitoring can be exploited as a valuable tool to acquire continuous, high-quality information on the evolution of beach morphology at a low cost and, on such basis, perform beach resilience analyses. This manuscript presents preliminary results of an ongoing, long-term monitoring programme of five sandy Italian beaches along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian sea. The project aims at analyzing nearshore morphologic variabilities on a time period of several years, to link them to resilience indicators. The observations indicate that most of the beach width variations can be linked to discrete variations of sandbar systems, and most of all to an offshore migration and decay of the outermost bars. Further, the largest net shoreline displacements across the observation period are experienced by beaches with a clear NOM (Net Offshore Migration)-type evolution of the seabed.

Abstract: We discuss the contribution of the research groups that work at UNIVPM in the field of infrastructure engineering to the design of resilient hydraulic and transportation infrastructures and related solutions for the protection of the environment. After recalling the long history of research and engineering intervention of the groups of Hydraulics and Transportation Infrastructures of UNIVPM, we show how the activities of such groups are becoming of increasing importance in response to the growing request of innovative solutions for resilient infrastructures (e.g. coastal protection and maritime structures, road and airport pavements) and environment protection (e.g. coastal and river flood, air pollution, waste recycling and materials reuse). Such activities have been recently boosted by the resources made available to the two groups through the “Dipartimenti di Eccellenza” award, which largely focuses on the issue of engineering for resilient built and natural environments. A projection in the future of the activities of above is also proposed.

Medium-term dynamics of a Middle Adriatic barred beach

Abstract: In recent years, attention has been paid to beach protection by means of soft and hard defenses. Along the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea, sandy beaches are the most common landscape feature and around 70% of the Marche region's coast (central Adriatic) is protected by defense structures. The longest free-from-obstacle nearshore area in the region includes the beach of Senigallia, frequently monitored in the last decades and characterized by a multiple bar system, which represents a natural beach defense. The bathymetries surveyed in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 show long-Term stability, confirmed by a good adaptation of an analyzed stretch of the beach to the Dean-Type equilibrium profile, though a strong short-to medium-Term variability of the wave climate has been observed during the monitored periods. The medium-Term dynamics of the beach, which deal with the evolution of submerged bars and are of the order of years or seasons, have been related to the wave climate collected, during the analyzed temporal windows, by a wave buoy located about 40ĝ€km off Senigallia. An overall interpretation of the hydrodynamics, sediment characteristics and seabed morphology suggests that the wave climate is fundamental for the morphodynamic changes of the beach in the medium term. These medium-Term time ranges during which waves mainly come from NNE/ESE are characterized by a larger/smaller steepness and by a larger/smaller relative wave height, and seem to induce seaward/shoreward bar migration as well as bar smoothing/steepening. Moving southeastward, the bar dimension increases, while the equilibrium profile shape suggests the adaptation to a decreasing sediment size in the submerged beach. This is probably due to the presence of both the harbor jetty and river mouth north of the investigated area.

Abstract: The Misa River on the Italian Adriatic coast is typical of the rivers that drain the Apennine Mountain range. The focus of this study, conducted in the late summer of 2013 and mid-winter of 2014, was to contrast the general wintertime-summertime dynamics in the Misa River estuarine systemrather than investigate specific dynamical features (e.g. offshore sediment transport, channel seiche, and flocculation mechanisms). Summertime conditions of the Misa River estuary are characterized by low freshwater discharge and net sediment deposition whereas, in the wintertime, the Misa River and estuary is characterized by high episodic freshwater discharge and net erosion and sediment export. Major observed differences between wintertime-summertime dynamics in the Misa River and estuary are a result of seasonal-scale differences in regional precipitation and forcing conditions driven largely by the duration and intensity of prevailing wind patterns that frequently change direction in summertime while keep almost constant directions for much longer periods in wintertime, thus generating major sea storms. Sediment deposition was observed in the final reach of the Misa River and estuary in the summertime. However, in the wintertime, large flood events led to sediment erosion and export in the final reach of the Misa River and estuary that, in conjunction with storm-wave-induced mud transport, led to sediment deposition at the river entrance and in the adjacent nearshore region. The seasonal cyclic pattern of erosion and deposition was confirmedwith bathymetric surveys of the final reach of the estuarine region. A critical component for the balance between summertime deposition and wintertime erosion was the presence of an underlying mat of organic deposits that limited the availability of sediments for erosion in winter, when massive debris transport occurs. Further, suspended cohesive sediments flocs were subjected to smaller hydrodynamic stresses in the summertime favoring depositionwithin the estuary. Conversely, during wintertime storms, flocswere subjected to larger hydrodynamic stresses favoring breakup into smaller flocs and deposition outside the estuary.

Abstract: Abstract. In the recent years attention has been paid to the beach protection by means of soft and hard defenses. This suggests a slight influence of wave forcing on the long-term profiles, which seems to only depend on the sediment size. Further, the medium-term dynamics of the submerged bars and their geometric features have been related to the wave climate collected by a wave buoy located 40 km off Senigallia during the analyzed temporal windows. An overall interpretation of the complete dynamics, i.e. hydrodynamics (buoy data), sediment characteristics (equilibrium-profile A parameter) and morphodynamics (bathymetric surveys), suggests that the wave climate is fundamental for the morphodynamic changes of the beach in the medium term: waves coming from NNE/ESE are characterized by a larger/smaller steepness and induce seaward/shoreward bar migration, as well as bar smoothing/steepening. Moving southward, the bar dimension increases, while the equilibrium profile suggests a decrease of the sediment size in the submerged beach, this probably due to the presence of both harbor jetty and river mouth North of the investigated area.

Abstract: As part of the Estuarine Cohesive Sediments (EsCoSed) project, a field experiment was performed in a highly engineered environment, acting as a natural laboratory, to study the physico-chemical properties of estuarine sediments and the associated hydro-morphodynamics during different seasons. The present contribution focuses on the results obtained from the summertime monitoring of the most downstream part of the Misa River (Senigallia, Italy). The measured hydrodynamics suggested a strong interaction between river current, wave forcing and tidal motion; flow velocities, affected by wind waves traveling upstream, changed significantly along the water column in both direction and magnitude. Surficial salinities in the estuary were low in the upper reaches of the estuary and exceeded 10 psu before the river mouth. Montmorillonite dominated the clay mineral assemblage, suggesting that large, low density flocs with high settling velocities (> 1 mms(-1)) may dominate the suspended aggregate materials.

Abstract: An analysis of the run-up over different beach profiles is performed to evaluate the influence of the seabed shape on shore flooding. The analysis was carried out on the basis of numerical solutions of the nonlinear shallow water equations. The chosen solver was shown to provide reliable (both quantitatively and qualitatively) run-up results by comparing numerical solutions (of both solitary and regular waves) with the only available analytical solution forced by a localized topographic change. The run-up patterns on both a natural beach profile and three simpler and schematic profiles derived from it were evaluated. Different wave conditions (both random and groups) were used for a total amount of 96 different cases of inundation. Results are expressed in terms of both maximum (Zmax) and steady-state (Zsteady) run-up. It is found that both types of run-up depend on the offshore variable sqrt(H0L0), as suggested by several available studies, and that, for all tested cases, random waves induce the largest Zmax compared with the wave groups. The largest Zmax is induced by the composite-planar profile for both random waves and groups. An important similarity is found for both Zmax and Zsteady induced by all wave types over the natural and equilibrium profiles, giving further support to the use of an equilibrium profile as representative of the natural profile. Attempts at finding an equivalent planar beach highlight unavoidable difficulties in choosing such a profile and reinforce the idea that the concept of an equivalent planar beach cannot bridge dynamics occurring from the depth of closure to the run-up. More likely, such a concept is only suitable to describe dynamics that are local to the foreshore.

Abstract: Wave breaking over submerged topographic obstacles leads to vorticity generation and, at times, to the generation of strong offshore-directed rip currents. The generation of finite-length breakers may also be induced by the positive interaction of wave trains propagating to shore with a relative angle. Such an interaction gives rise to a short-crested system, this, in turn, generating both breakers of finite crossflow length and an intense associated vorticity. We here analyze such a vorticity generation mechanism specifically focusing on the location where wave breaking occurs. To this purpose we both derive a simple theory, based on the well-known theory of wave ray propagation, and perform ad-hoc numerical simulations, using a NSWE (Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations) solver. A fairly good comparison between such preliminary theoretical and numerical results suggests that the present work be used as the basis for future analyses of vorticity generation by cross-seas.

On the role of the Chezy frictional term near the shoreline
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The behavior of the Chezy frictional term near the shoreline has been studied in detail. An asymptotic analysis valid for water depths going to zero clearly shows that the use of such a term implies a non-receding motion of the shoreline. This phenomenon is induced by a thin layer of water which, because of frictional forces, remains on the beach and keeps it wet seaward of the largest run-up. However, the influence of such a frictional layer of water on the global wave motion is very weak and practically negligible for most of the swash zone flow dynamics. The existence of a non-receding shoreline has led to some clarifications on the role of some ad-hoc tools used in numerical models for the prediction of the wet/dry interface.

Abstract: The working features of innovative coastal defense structures that can dissipate the energy of incoming waves by the action of large-scale bottom unevennesses rigid blades covering the lower half of the water depth were investigated by means of a laboratory experimental campaign. The goal of the study was to characterize the ability of the structures to efficiently reduce the wave height with a minimal change in the mean water superelevations. Similar wave height reductions were achieved for both vertical and inclined blades; their efficiency was slightly superior to that of traditional submerged rubble-mound breakwaters of the same cross-shore extension. For the incident waves examined, very low mean water elevations were observed inshore of the structures, with the inclined blades producing the smallest values. These results suggest that the structures analyzed here could represent an alternative to submerged rubble-mound breakwaters from a hydrodynamic point of view to protect coastlines prone to erosion with minimal risk of dangerous rip currents.

Abstract: A comparative assessment of available formulae for the water setup inshore of submerged breakwaters is made on the basis of a wide and varied dataset derived from basin and flume laboratory experiments. Formulae derived from a simplified view which does not account for the horizontal flow circulation provide a large overestimate _up to one order of magnitude_ of the smaller setup values. A much better overall approximation of the measured data is obtained through formulae that consider the setup as part of a complete flow description, be it partially or fully accounting for the horizontal flow motion.

Abstract: A beach sedimentation problem is presented. This problem involves assessing the impact and importance of land-based sediment sources (erosion from gullies during intense rainfall, and directly from cliffs by wave action) on morphodynamic changes at a beach. The site motivating the study is La Barrosa beach, Spain. The location is described and a discussion of possible approaches presented. A schematized representation of a gully and beach is used. A hybrid approach is adopted, in which sediment deposition by run-off (and to a lesser extent cliff erosion) is modelled using wave-resolving hydrodynamic models. It is found that significant amounts of sediment can be supplied by gully run-off during storms. For small run-offs the swash can be involved in determining the region of deposition within the gully area, with longer period motions favouring increased sediment deposition at gully sides. Simulations also show that swash motions can erode gully sides, and the presence of a cross-shore jet associated with the swash and gullies can also impact on sediment movement. Longer term, wave-averaged morphodynamic modelling (without a swash zone) indicates that run-off deposits subsequently diffuse laterally, whether under normal or oblique incidence. These simulations also reveal the possibility of underlying crescentic bar-shedding dynamics that may pertain during changes of wave conditions.

Abstract: Horizontal mixing of shallow coastal flows is studied with a specific focus on the role played by large-scale horizontal eddies (macrovortices). Within the classic depth-averaged Nonlinear ShallowWater Equations (NSWE) framework, generation of such macrovortices can be described through one single mechanism for which lateral gradients of shock-type solutions introduce vorticity in the flow. This mechanism is intensely activated when waves break over discontinuous topographic features like natural longshore sand bars or man-made submerged breakwaters. Description of macrovortex-induced mixing is given on the basis of numerical solutions of the NSWE and interpreting the results of specifically-designed laboratory experiments. Deterministic results concerning the generation/evolution of macrovortices are obtained and statistics of passive tracers are used to interpret the overall dynamics in terms of 2D turbulence theory. Preliminary results indicate differences in the mixing features of flows induced by isolated and arrays of submerged breakwaters. A discussion is also proposed on possible approaches for improving our knowledge/modeling of such type of mixing.

Abstract: This is the second part of a series examining the behaviour of breaking-waveinduced macrovortices. The first part examined theoretically general behaviours during startup conditions, and gave computational results for macrovortex generation and their evolution on widely spaced breakwaters. In this paper, we extend and test qualitatively and quantitatively some of the basic results of Part 1, in particular the initial longshore vortex transport for a wide range of geometries ranging from narrow rip current topographies to isolated breakwaters. Accounting for the presence of a shoreline is found to be necessary for the representation of longshore vortex transport. Results show vortex motion ranging from strongly offshore in the case of a narrow rip current, to strongly longshore in the case of an isolated breakwater. Even with the significant approximations inherent in the analytical predictions, numerical computations using time-domain Boussinesq-type equations and laboratory experiments confirm the trends. Part 3 examines the horizontal mixing features of wave-induced flows over isolated (single-breakwater configuration) or multiple (ripcurrent configuration) submerged structures.

Abstract: In this and the companion paper (Part 2) we examine experimentally, computationally, and analytically the behaviour of breaking-wave-induced macrovortices during startup conditions. Widely separated breakwaters and rip current topographies are chosen as opposite ends of the parameter space. Part 1 examines generation mechanisms using phase-resolving and phase-averaged approximations, and suggests several simple predictive relations for general behaviour. Vortex trajectories and shedding periods for wave breaking on widely spaced breakwaters are also considered in detail. Results show broad agreement with theoretical trajectories. Predictions of vortex shedding periods on breakwater heads show excellent agreement with computations. Part 2 examines startup macrovortices on rip current topographies using computations and laboratory experiments, and changes in behaviour as the system transitions from wide to narrow gap width.

Abstract: We investigate, within the framework of the nonlinear shallow water equations (NSWE), the generation and evolution of large-scale eddies with vertical axis (macrovortices hereinafter) which are responsible for much of the horizontal mixing occurring at the boundaries between the main channel and the flood planes of a compound channel. We show that the mechanism of generation of vorticity is essentially inviscid and is analogous to that occurring at a curved shock. Numerical experiments performed by means of a recently developed shock-capturing model for the solution of the NSWE, and described in Brocchini et al. (2001), clarify some features of macrovortices generation and allow us to quantify the momentum transfer across the channel.
