Poisson's ratio bounds in orthotropic materials. Application to natural composites: wood, bamboo and Arundo donax

Abstract: The paper discusses the restrictions the positive definite character of the strain energy imposes to the values of the Poisson's ratios in a linear elastic orthotropic constitutive law. By exploiting the reciprocity principle and the conservation of energy, non-trivial constraints arise, leading to a particularly expressive form of the domain of existence, named Tetrahedron-Ellipsoid locus, in the space of three independent Poisson's ratios. The presented analysis establishes several notable restrictions for the elastic behavior of orthotropic composite materials, in all the cases in which there are great differences in the Young's moduli. For instance, near the edge of this locus, some Poisson ratios may belong to an interval not including the zero value; a very interesting peculiarity, perhaps not yet figured out in literature. In order to assess the coerciveness of the formulation, the results are applied to common wood essences, to several Italian growing species of bamboo and Arundo donax, natural composite functionally graded orthotropic materials. In the latter cases, an extensive experimental investigation is carried out to detect several Poisson's ratios, not studied in literature. Poisson ratios are obtained directly by strains measured by means of both physical strain gauges and Digital Image Correlation (DIC).

Exact Solutions of Linear Buckling for a Class of FGM Columns with Varying Cross-Section

Abstract: This paper deals with the linear buckling problem for inhomogeneous Euler-Bernoulli column having both mechanical and geometrical properties variable along its length. Four classes of longitudinally functionally graded material columns with variable cross-sections are considered. The solutions of the relevant differential equations are obtained in terms of both hypergeometric functions and elementary functions. The normalized buckling loads are computed for five typical boundary conditions and they are validated by a comparison with approximate numerical results available in literature. The proposed formulation may provide a further benchmark for the accuracy assessment of numerical and approximated solutions.

Il bambù italiano e le sue potenzialità come materiale strutturale

Abstract: Il bambù è da sempre usato in alcune parti del mondo non solo come materiale per produrre oggetti, ma come vero e proprio materiale strutturale per case, passerelle pedonali, edifici di culto, padiglioni fieristici e numerosi tipi di costruzioni. Con la crescente necessità di ridurre le emissioni di gas serra per limitare il fenomeno del riscaldamento globale, nel settore delle costruzioni il bambù può assumere un ruolo importante nell’ambito strutturale perché è particolarmente resistente, sostenibile e altamente rinnovabile. La sua resistenza a trazione può raggiungere valori molto elevati, mentre le altre caratteristiche meccaniche sono paragonabili a quelle del legno. La pianta cresce molto velocemente senza particolari condizioni bioclimatiche e raggiunge la maturazione entro i 3 e i 6 anni, intervallo di tempo entro il quale il bambù può essere utilizzato come materiale da costruzione. L’articolo riporta i risultati che sono stati ottenuti al termine di un’ampia indagine sulle proprietà fisiche e meccaniche di alcune specie di bambù che crescono in Italia. I bambù, tutti appartenenti al genere Phyllostachys, raggiungono valori di resistenza molto significativi, simili o superiori a quelli esibiti dalla specie più nota usata nell’ambito delle costruzioni, ovvero la Guadua angustifolia. Inoltre, si conferma che il bambù italiano dal punto di vista del suo comportamento meccanico è un ottimo candidato per prodotti ingegnerizzati specializzati per applicazioni strutturali, come il bambù lamellare.

Mechanical characterization of five species of Italian bamboo

Abstract: High mechanical performance coupled with sustainability gives to bamboo a high potential to substitute conventional construction materials in various applications. In particular, there are countries in which this material has been used in construction for millennia and represents an asset, on the contrary, there are countries where there is still not enough knowledge of the structural properties of locally-grown bamboo. In these cases, it is important to extend the knowledge of the mechanical properties of local bamboo species supported by the development of suitable standardised testing procedures. In this view, the paper presents the results of an experimental study for the mechanical characterization of five bamboo species cultivated in Italy (Phyllostachys bambusoides, edulis, iridescens, violascens and vivax). For compressive tests, the used methodology is compliant with ISO Standards; for tensile test, the procedure suggested by ISO is very difficult to apply so different set ups have been proposed and in the second part of the paper a critical discussion about ISO methodology and its possible improvements are reported. The findings from this research shed light on current challenges and on the possible future steps for a wider uptake of natural materials in constructions.

Abstract: In recent years, Italy has been hit by earthquakes, causing significant damage to masonry and reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Especially, common buildings and ordinary structures in many small historical towns of Italian central regions, such as Marche, have suffered dramatic consequences and destruction. Dynamic analysis and seismic structural safety are important topics in civil engineering, which have been studied and deepened for many years by the researchers of the Structural Division of the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, and Architecture of UnivPM. The researches have been oriented towards the investigation of structures under seismic loads in order to improve the knowledge of the structural response under high actions, due to the soil dynamic movements and, thus, define adequate techniques to strengthen the damaged structures. In this paper we present a wide spectrum of main results of our research group, comprising experimental studies, vulnerability analysis and assessment of existing structures, new methods of modelling and theoretical approaches to define the dynamic behavior of structures, also in presence of damage. Finally, we show and discuss new prospects of research for safety, employing advanced techniques and materials to prevent collapse and/or relevant damages in structures.

Abstract: Nowadays the robotic challenges are various and many of these are oriented towards bioinspired, safe and energy efficient solutions. The analysis of these systems traditionally is performed by considering rigid bodies and ideal connections thanks to the easier approach in studying their motion and performances. However, in all the cases when the structural deformations determine the magnitude of the external forces acting on the mechanism, the structural flexibility cannot be neglected. Considering these needs, the authors propose the development of a flexible robotic leg as a first step in the design of a jumping humanoid robot. It is called FLEGX (FLEXible Leg) and it has a double layer control system: low and high level respectively. The first one aims at obtaining an order reduction model, while the latter tends to produce a stable orbit in the state space variable to perform a controlled sequence of jumps. FLEGX design validation was performed using the software MSC.Nastran R and MSC.Adams R -Matlab/Simulink R integrated environment. Future works concern an extended campaign of experimental tests on the physical to collect data useful for validate the numerical models.

Towards multi-body analyses for advanced flexible robotic systems

Abstract: Manufacturers answered to the global competition rise by increasing the efficiency of their development process by substituing the hardware tests with their virtual counterpart. Following the same idea, in this paper, the introduction of the virtual prototyping technique in the design of a complex robotic leg is proposed. The novelty of this work is double: the first motivation lies on the characteristic of the mechanism, since it is a FLEXible jumping LEG; the second one, instead, regards to the introduction of methods well known in other research field but rarely used in robotics. This paper describes the whole design process, while the assembly of the physical prototype, the control development and the experimental tests will be matters of future works.

Rigid folding representation by the Stereographic Projection

Abstract: The Stereographic Projection machinery is applied to the qualitative and quantitative description of the folding problem of an origami-like structure: the facets of a creased rigid sheet undergo successive rotation about several creases arbitrarily located in the three-dimensional space. The theoretical apparatus is revisited and some basic problems are depicted to emphasize both the simplicity and the great efficiency of the representation. Several original results, useful to simplify the trajectory tracing of the facet, are derived. The Representation of the Pole Path around a corner is finally presented as an alternative synthetic description of the folded configuration. An application to a multi-folded carton erection demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed formulation.

Abstract: In packaging industry, the duration of the carton folding plays a fundamental role in the production process; in particular in the erection process when each panel rotates around the die-pressed lines called creases. Their bending response can be very complex, depending on forming and environment conditions. The crease mechanical properties, such as geometrical parameters, temperature, moisture and folding speed, influence the overall production. It is therefore necessary to control all of these parameters, from both a theoretical and experimental point of view. About this, an experimental setup is expressly designed and built w.r.t. the rotation angle for a paper around the respective crease. The results of this research allow demonstrating the reliability of the experimental setup, the substantial negligibility of the geometrical errors and determining the number of sample so that the dispersion is compatible with the experimental errors. Then the test-ring is suitable for carton folding investigation.

Large bending behavior of creased paperboard. II. Structural analysis

Abstract: The mechanics of a paradigmatic typical carton corner with five creases is analyzed theoretically, in closed form. A general kinematical analysis of the mechanism (in finite rotation) is presented, assuming the versor of the intermediate crease, s, as a 2-degree-of-freedom Lagrangian parameter. The rotation hc of the cth crease is derived, together with the existence domain and a discussion of the singular configurations. The actions, driving the carton during a prescribed quasi-static erection program, are derived in a very efficient manner using the Virtual Works Equation, taking into account a non-linear anholonomic bending constitutive law of the creased paperboard. In particular, the active and reactive components of the moment /, driving s along its path, are identified. No resort to the tangent stiffness computation is required. Some numerical examples illustrate the rotation and the driving forces obtained for both monotone- loading and complex loading–unloading erection paths. The presented results, ‘‘exact’’ within the scope of the restrictive hypotheses assumed, may be used in a preliminary design approach as well as a benchmark for more realistic FEM or CAE simulators

Large bending behavior of creased paperboard. I. Experimental investigations

Abstract: The large bending behavior of a creased paperboard is studied in the range of rotation h e [0,180] – new results, apparently not reported previously in literature – with the aim to point out some crucial aspect involved in an adaptive robotic manipulation of the industrial cartons. The loading tests show a great variability of the mechanical behavior, depending dramatically on the crease indentation depth (also for the specimens obtained from the same carton): (a) when the damage induced during the crease formation is relatively small, the bending response is unusually complex: the moment constitutive function, mL(h), presents (up to) two peaks followed by unstable branches; (b) for greater indentation, the mL(h) is monotone. In the unloading case the response mU(h) is always monotone and is practically independent of the formation conditions of the crease. These behaviors can be easily described analytically using (piecewise) third degree splines. In a companion paper, the erection of a typical carton corner with unstable constitutive behavior is fully analyzed to detect the possible criticalities.

Exact deflation in the complex modal analysis of low-rank nonclassically damped structures

Abstract: This paper presents the complex modal analysis for a proportionally damped structure equipped with linear non-proportionally damped viscous elements (substructures or discrete real devices) giving a low-rank contribution (r) to the non-proportional part of the damping matrix. Using the classical undamped modes and a special low-rank matrix update formulation of the original problem, the original Quadratic Eigenproblem (QEP) is hugely deflated, without approximations, to an equivalent Rational Eigenproblem (REP) of dimension r << n (Theorem 2), as an alternative to the linearized Standard Eigenproblem of order 2n over the complex field. The existence of classical modes in non-classically damped structures is also discussed. The REP is solved by the homotopy method: a robust predictor-corrector continuation algorithm is designed in order to determine the required eigenpairs. Some application to simple models of both traditional and base-isolated structures, together with an outline of future work, end the paper.

Bilateral bounds for the shear and torsion factors: comments on elementary derivations

Abstract: This paper proposes a new simple derivation of bilateral bounds for the strain energy-based shear and torsion factors, χi, of an elastic beam together with some comments about the coherence of the current formulations. A rearrangement of the definition as a mean over the cross-section and an original decomposition of the shear stress in two parts — τeqv that is equivalent to the external force and a residual Δτ — allow (i) to interpret (χ-1) as the mean quadratic deviation of the shear field with respect to the distribution τeqv and (ii) to easily evaluate an upper bound, using minimal information about the stress field. In this formulation the lower bound becomes trivial. Several numerical examples illustrate the accuracy and suitability of the results obtained.

Discussion of "Simple Mechanical Model of Curved Beams by a 3D Approach"

Abstract: The authors present a formulation of the static linear behavior of a non-homogeneous plane beam with large curvature: the displacement field is derived from the hypothesis of a rigid cross section in its plane (for axial and bending effects) and from a “pure torsion” case (for non-uniform torsion). Shearing strain is not taken directly into account so that shear forces are considered to be reactive. The governing equilibrium equations are derived from the Theorem of Minimum total Potential Energy. This discussion focuses on several consequences of the proposed theory with the aim to elucidate some aspects of the 3D behavior of a curved beam. Spectral Acceleration and Pseudo-spectral acceleration proximity

Abstract: This paper deals with the deterministic relationship between spectral and pseudo-spectral acceleration, SA(csi,omega0) and PSA(csi,omega0) respectively, and gives the reason for their proximity on theoretical basis. The key step is to estimate the velocity at the acceleration extrema using the exact integral representation of the solution. When the product csi T0 < 1, each maximum displacement occurs csiT0/ Pi after each acceleration maximum. In this case the maximum displacement is evaluated in closed form as a simple function of the maximum acceleration: the well-known proximity between spectral and pseudo-spectral acceleration is thus quantified for the first time. As an alternative, a very simple procedure is presented using a “first-order” version of the motion equation; despite its coarseness the result agrees with the more complex analysis discussed previously. On the other hand, in Seismic Base Isolation systems (with large modal periods and damping ratios) a discussion of the relationship between PSA(csi,omega0) – giving the forces on the structure – and SA(csi,omega0) – governing the forces on the foundation – becomes crucial. Comparison of the obtained results with spectral quantities derived from a number of real accelerograms, along with a description of a typical counterexample in which displacement and acceleration extrema are not correlated, end the paper.
