MO.SE.: MOSAIC IMAGE SEGMENTATION BASED ON DEEP CASCADING LEARNING

Abstract: Mosaic is an ancient type of art used to create decorative images or patterns combining small components. A digital version of a mosaic can be useful for archaeologists, scholars and restorers who are interested in studying, comparing and preserving mosaics. Nowadays, archaeologists base their studies mainly on manual operation and visual observation that, although still fundamental, should be supported by an automatized procedure of information extraction. In this context, this research explains improvements which can change the manual and time-consuming procedure of mosaic tesserae drawing. More specifically, this paper analyses the advantages of using Mo.Se. (Mosaic Segmentation), an algorithm that exploits deep learning and image segmentation techniques; the methodology combines U-Net 3 Network with the Watershed algorithm. The final purpose is to define a workflow which establishes the steps to perform a robust segmentation and obtain a digital (vector) representation of a mosaic. The detailed approach is presented, and theoretical justifications are provided, building various connections with other models, thus making the workflow both theoretically valuable and practically scalable for medium or large datasets. The automatic segmentation process was tested with the high-resolution orthoimage of an ancient mosaic by following a close-range photogrammetry procedure. Our approach has been tested in the pavement of St. Stephen's Church in Umm ar-Rasas, a Jordan archaeological site, located 30 km southeast of the city of Madaba (Jordan). Experimental results show that this generalized framework yields good performances, obtaining higher accuracy compared with other state-of-the-art approaches. Mo.Se. has been validated using publicly available datasets as a benchmark, demonstrating that the combination of learning-based methods with procedural ones enhances segmentation performance in terms of overall accuracy, which is almost 10% higher. This study's ambitious aim is to provide archaeologists with a tool which accelerates their work of automatically extracting ancient geometric mosaics.

Abstract: Augmented and virtual reality proved to be valuable solutions to convey contents in a more appealing and interac- tive way. Given the improvement of mobile and smart devices in terms of both usability and computational power, contents can be easily conveyed with a realism level never reached in the past. Despite the tremendous number of researches related with the presentation of new fascinating applications of ancient goods and artifacts augmenta- tion, few papers are focusing on the real effect these tools have on learning. Within the framework of SmartMarca project, this chapter focuses on assessing the potential of AR/VR applications specifically designed for cultural heritage. Tests have been conducted on classrooms of teenagers to whom different learning approaches served as an evaluation method about the effectiveness of using these technologies for the education process. The chapter argues on the necessity of developing new tools to enable users to become producers of contents of AR/VR experiences.

A relational conceptual model in GIS for the management of photovoltaic systems

Abstract: The aim of this manuscript is to define an operational pipeline of work, from data acquisition to the report creation, for the smart management of PV plants. To achieve such an ambitious result, we exploit the implementation of a conceptual model, deployed through a relational database to retrieve any kind of information related to the PV plant. The motivation that drove this research is due to the increasing construction of PV plants. In fact, following European and international investments that heavily stimulated the use of clean energy, the need to maintain PV plants in their maximum efficiency for their whole lifecycle emerged, to bring about benefits from both the ecological and the economic points of view. While the research community focuses on finding new and automatic ways to detect faults automatically, few efforts have been made considering the so-called Operation and Maintenance (O&M). A relational conceptual model may facilitate the management of heterogeneous sources of information, which are common in complex PV plants. The purpose of the present study is to provide companies and insiders with a GIS-based tool to maintain the energy efficiency of a PV plant. Indeed, it is a common practice used by companies dealing with O&M of PV plants to create technical reports about the health status of the plants. This operation, made manually, is very time consuming and error prone. To overcome this latter drawback, this work attempts to encourage the use of GIS in the PV plants O&M, which proves to be efficient to deal with fault management and to assure a good level of energy production. The developed conceptual model, tested on two real case studies, proved to be complete, cost-effective and efficient to be replicated in other existing plants.

Point cloud semantic segmentation using a deep learning framework for cultural heritage

Abstract: In the Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) domain, the semantic segmentation of 3D Point Clouds with Deep Learning (DL) techniques can help to recognize historical architectural elements, at an adequate level of detail, and thus speed up the process of modeling of historical buildings for developing BIM models from survey data, referred to as HBIM (Historical Building Information Modeling). In this paper, we propose a DL framework for Point Cloud segmentation, which employs an improved DGCNN (Dynamic Graph Convolutional Neural Network) by adding meaningful features such as normal and colour. The approach has been applied to a newly collected DCH Dataset which is publicy available: ArCH (Architectural Cultural Heritage) Dataset. This dataset comprises 11 labeled points clouds, derived from the union of several single scans or from the integration of the latter with photogrammetric surveys. The involved scenes are both indoor and outdoor, with churches, chapels, cloisters, porticoes and loggias covered by a variety of vaults and beared by many different types of columns. They belong to different historical periods and different styles, in order to make the dataset the least possible uniform and homogeneous (in the repetition of the architectural elements) and the results as general as possible. The experiments yield high accuracy, demonstrating the effectiveness and suitability of the proposed approach.

Knowledge modeling for heritage conservation process: from survey to HBIM implementation

Abstract: This paper aims to develop a strategy for architectural knowledge modeling in order to actively support the built heritage conservation process by fostering collaboration among stakeholders and interoperability between datasets. The integration of two modeling systems, one ontology-based and one in BIM environment, seems to be the right way to meet this objective: the former is rather exhaustive to represent the semantic contents of conservation activities, especially non-geometrical data, the latter is absolutely suitable to represent the logic of the construction, above all geometrical-constructive aspects typical of any architectural organism. Thus, this study proposes a side-by-side approach to synchronize these different ways of representing reality by managing the complexity of cultural heritage on the one hand and of technology tools, such as information systems, on the other. The proposed methodology was tested on the city walls of San Ginesio (Macerata, Italy) and included different steps considering the in-use technologies (notably geomatics and information technologies) as key enablers to acquire, hierarchically order, model and enrich the knowledge of that heritage site. The result is a knowledge-led strategy moving from survey to HBIM implementation, as a way to enhance representation and management in architectural heritage processes.

Abstract: Precision Farming is nowadays an important challenge aiming to improve environmental quality in rural areas, giving more sustainability to agricultural operations by improving the quality of fieldworks and increasing the food safety and security for social life. To these purposes, the setting up of specific methodologies, for precision Farming Management System (FMS), is required the use of sensors and Geomatics techniques and optimization of field operation with the aim to build a precision Farming Management System (FMS) enhancing the agricultural performance and ability to predict and mitigate environmental risks. The research activities here presented belong to a multidisciplinary project named “PFRLab: Setting of a Precision Farming Robotic Laboratory for cropping system sustainability and food safety and security” founded by the Università Politecnica delle Marche during the period 2017–2020. The main goal of the research is to design a database for data management based on agriculture ontology, using as case study the experimental farm of Università Politecnica delle Marche. To solved this task, many data have been connected by advanced technologies like Unmanned (UAV), Internet of Things (IoT), Remote Sensing and field sensors. In the future, the big amount of field data allow building a Decision Support System to increase the performances of precision farming experimental trials and making farm’s decision potentially more productive and efficient.

Abstract: This work assesses the conditions of slope instability in the Khinis archaeological area (northern Iraq), which threaten the integrity and conservation of the local cultural heritage. The site preserves traces of sculpturing activity produced during the reign of the Assyrian king Sennacherib (VIII-VII centuries BCE, i.e. before common era). Bas-reliefs were created to celebrate the realization of canalization works built to transport waters from the Zagros Mountains to Nineveh. Multidisciplinary analysis of the local rock slope highlights active rock fall processes of varying magnitude. A few large rock pillars (hundreds of m) show different conditions of instability after a limit-equilibrium analysis. Meanwhile, potential falls of smaller rock blocks affect the entire Khinis slope as they can detach from mid-slope escarpments. Through probabilistic 3D modelling, the calculation of block trajectories, arrest areas and energy values involved allows the design of a remediation plan, in accordance with the preservation requirements of the landscape value of the site. Finally, some hypotheses are advanced concerning the possible relationships between rock fall processes and the accomplishment of some of the Assyrian sculptures. A reason for further interest in this archaeological site, that it will soon be proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Abstract: National Strategy For Cultural Heritage 2017-2027 is a Kosovo Government document that aims the enhancement of the system for the protection and preservation of Kosovan cultural heritage. Among the listed goals, one can find the promotion of an integrated data management approach towards cooperation platforms that involve advanced technologies and information systems applied to cultural heritage. In a country with a low technological progress, as Kosovo is, an innovative information management system like HBIM is a huge challenge. This research contributes in opening the debate about the use of HBIM even for historical architecture, illustrating a methodology of information management promoting the conservation and the valorization of a Kosovan ottoman mosque. The workflow pipeline started with the close range photogrammetric survey, obtaining first spherical panoramas and then the wire-frame processed in a 3D modelling environment, suitable to implement the HBIM project. Basing on the accuracy of the data acquisition, the availability of information about the building and the related level of knowledge, we proposed a semantic representation of the complex structure integrating in an HBIM collecting in an "ad hoc" database the geometrical building components, enriched with attributes as images, materials, decay, interventions, etc., linked to each features. Our approach is an example of how efficient semantic classification can be repeated for the analysis and the documentation of other similar ottoman mosque, simplifying the management of construction by a sort of unique and searchable archive. The advantage of the interoperability concept allows the data sharing is now stressed by HBIM.

Abstract: With increasing world population, agriculture must face the challenge of ensuring the growing demand for food. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. Durum) is a staple food that provides calories and nutrients in many parts of the world. It is the main cereal crop in Italy and in the Marche region is the most representative crop. The Interdepartmental Research founded by Università Politecnica delle Marche called “PFRLab: Setting of a Precision Farming Robotic Laboratory for cropping system sustainability and food safety and security”, is examining the effect of different nitrogen (N) fertilization sources, soil tillage depths and crop rotations on durum wheat quality, which is still underway. This project also aims at evaluating specific criteria for food safety, studying the effects of pollutants together with the bioavailability of nutrients. The durum wheat samples were cultivated and subsequently collected at “Pasquale Rosati” experimental farm of the Università Politecnica delle Marche on a ground divided into conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT). As regards the biochemical characterization of durum wheat, the percentage of proteins via the Kjeldahl method, lutein, and the mineral composition (Mn, Cu, Se), present in wheat grains, were evaluated. The preliminary results suggest a higher percentage of protein in the product on NT soil compared to CT; in relation to the quantity of fertilizer used N 0 Kg ha-1 and N 180 Kg ha-1 a higher protein percentage following N 180 Kg ha-1 fertilization was noted. Durum wheat is a significant source of manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) and between the two types of soil and fertilizer no significant differences were found. The same also for lutein. The NT treatment expressed its superior nature for a good level of grain quality. Further and extensive studies are planned to combine the effects of nitrogen fertilization and soil management on the main durum wheat production variables.

Abstract: The acceleration of Digital Agriculture is evident through the increased adoption of digital technologies on farms including smart machines, sensors and cloud computing. In this paper we present the preliminary results of the research project funded by Università Politecnica delle Marche in 2018 "PFRLab: Setting of a precision farming robotic laboratory for cropping system sustainability and food safety and security", which is still underway. In this context, as first result, an interdepartmental Research and Services Center called "Smart Farming" has been set up with the aim to strengthen multidisciplinary collaborations in the fields of Agriculture and Forestry, Geomatics, ICT and Robotics. Regarding field activities the SPAD 502 as well as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) provide a good estimate of the Chlorophylla+b content in durum wheat leaves so can be used to predict in a quickly and non-destructively way, the crop greenness status and to identify any nutritional deficiencies in real time. Future research activities are certainly needed to fully explore the potentialities of conservation agriculture and precision farming, and to drive the transition process from conventional agriculture to modern conservation agriculture and precision farming techniques. In-depth studies are planned on the combined effect of nitrogen fertilization and soil management on the main production variables of durum wheat in order to evaluate whether specific tools for precision agriculture applications can find significant diffusion even in Mediterranean cereal based cropping systems.

Abstract: I recenti progressi nella tecnologia dei Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) hanno introdotto una gamma più ampia di bande operative capaci di coprire diverse centinaia di kHz e di offrire una migliore risoluzione di gamma per la raccolta di dati batimetrici. Tale tecnologia ha inoltre migliorato la capacità di discriminare i fondali marini, ponendo le basi per la ricerca sul backscattering multispettrale. In questo lavoro, sono presentati i risultati delle prime prove di un’indagine MBES multispettrale di una scogliera artificiale. La scogliera è costituita da piramidi e gabbie in calcestruzzo. Il sensore adoperato per le indagini è il Multibeam Echosounder EM 2040C, montato sulla barca da ricerca “Tecnopesca II” appartenente all’ISMAR – CNR di Ancona. I dati sono stati raccolti nell’agosto 2018 e successivamente analizzati per evidenziare variazioni da confrontare con dati monitorati da qualche decennio con sonar monofrequenza. Grazie all’alta risoluzione del MBES, i cambiamenti del fondale marino sono stati oggetto di studio per monitorare le strutture impiantate: molte delle gabbie e delle piramidi sono cadute cambiando la configurazione dell’impianto e la mappatura iniziale. Nel presente articolo saranno utilizzati metodi quantitativi, applicati per la segmentazione e la classificazione su dati MBES, sui dati batimetrici così da fornire informazioni sulla morfologia e la tessitura dei fondali marini. L’analisi è stata eseguita sia in ambiente GIS che con RSOBIA (Remote Sensing Object Based Image Analysis). A causa dell’assenza di verità a mare (ground-truth) è stato inoltre eseguito un primo approccio di classificazione unsupervised di tipo ISODATA (Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Techinique Algorithm).

IoT and engagement in the ubiquitous museum

Abstract: In increasingly hyper-connected societies, where individuals rely on short and fast online communications to consume information, museums face a significant survival challenge. Collaborations between scientists and museums suggest that the use of the technological framework known as Internet of Things (IoT) will be a key player in tackling this challenge. IoT can be used to gather and analyse visitor generated data, leading to data-driven insights that can fuel novel, adaptive and engaging museum experiences. We used an IoT implementation-a sensor network installed in the physical space of a museum-to look at how single visitors chose to enter and spend time in the different rooms of a curated exhibition. We collected a sparse, non-overlapping dataset of individual visits. Using various statistical analyses, we found that visitor attention span was very short. People visited five out of twenty rooms on average, and spent a median of two minutes in each room. However, the patterns of choice and time spent in rooms were not random. Indeed, they could be described in terms of a set of linearly separable visit patterns we obtained using principal component analysis. These results are encouraging for future interdisciplinary research that seeks to leverage IoT to get numerical proxies for people attention inside the museum, and use this information to fuel the next generation of possible museum interactions. Such interactions will based on rich, non-intrusive and diverse IoT driven conversation, dynamically tailored to visitors.

Abstract: The paper aims to present research activities about cultural and built heritage at various scales, from architecture to landscape, highlighting how innovative analysis and design approaches can challenge the current methods and pursue the main scope of increasing heritage resilience. The main scientific focus, heritage, works as a cross-cutting topic that is investigated according to the different disciplinary perspectives. At the same time this issue is able to merge the diverse souls of the research team: history of architecture, geomatics, drawing and survey, restoration, regeneration and design. Major results and findings are discussed throughout a set of case studies. These allowed to develop tools to perform rapid surveys and multilevel readings (stylistic, structural, historical, behavioral, etc.) as well as robust procedures for interventions and recycle at different scales of built heritage. Technologies and procedures are tested and validated on these cases that serve as prototypes. Finally, the paper aims to possibly extend the validated approaches to similar cases in the heritage field. The main research activities, indeed, entail the definition of the fundamental paradigms of resilience for heritage and landscape, against the backdrop of the contemporary techno-cultural revolution.

Abstract: Thrilling the society toward science and research is not trivial. Albeit the “academic industry” lavishes many efforts to spread its results not only among the insiders but to the whole mankind, the importance of sharing the knowledge of research is seldom a priority. The European Researcher Night is probably the most important EU action trying to overcome this limitation, putting altogether researcher from different disciplines to show their findings through stands, short communications and events. Within this framework, the event able to attracts citizens is the video mapping projection. In this article is described a multi-disciplinary process that makes use of a photogrammetric survey as an accurate source for video projection mapping. While well-established geomatics technologies (e.g. laser scanning and photogrammetry) paves the way for the virtual reconstruction of the architecture, they are even essential to perform analysis and studies which enables visual artist or art historians to tell the story of a building in a new and fascinating way. Besides the realization of the visual mapping and a critical discussion over the procedure that has been used to translate a 3D model in a visual storytelling of the building, the article also describes an innovative way that has been set up for the management of the whole SHARPER event. The system is app-based and was designed to allow the visitors to interact with the event directly from their smartphones; several active sensors have been displaced among the city, asking the user to search for virtual owls and to catch them by answering some questions, engaging the people by exploiting the gamification paradigm. This latter has been stressed further, since the video projection was conceived as a competition between the students of the Master degree course in Engineering-Architecture. Through the application, the attendant to the visual mapping where thus enabled to vote his/her favourite video in real-time.

A Geodatabase for Multisource Data Management Applied to Cultural Heritage: The Case Study of Villa Buonaccorsi's Historical Garden

Abstract: In recent years, the digitization of historical data related to the architectural heritage and the development of ICT-based methodologies applied to cultural goods have become increasingly relevant. In this context, the use of GIS (Geographical Information System) is growing significantly, with the aim of collecting, analysing and managing heterogeneous data in a spatial context. Given such premise, the site identified for this case-study is a historical Italian Garden into the Villa Buonaccorsi in Potenza Picena (MC, Italy). The project aims at creating a methodology, that organizing natural and artificial elements in the GIS, to support management and planning of this landscape architecture, considering also the changes during the time. A suitable GIS can promote and ensure a correct use of the heritage knowledge, preserving the historical identity, overlaying the data. The data management system, specifically developed for this case, is based on an open source GIS, where surveyed data coming from different sources and the relation to the attributes have been descripted in a conceptual model. The inventory of this geodatabase, in a dedicated GIS, has allowed to perform some queries, making in output a dialogue box with all the information, in form of report, useful to the manager of a historical garden. The structure of the GIS can significantly to help who works with similar cases and it can be useful for analysis, management, storage and integration of information related to Italian gardens.

Abstract: In the near past, sources of information about public open spaces were: people, the place itself and historical archives. Accordingly, the information could be obtained by interviewing the visitors, by reading some poorly equipped signs on monuments or by research in libraries. Today, a new source appeared: The place itself covers its own information by the mean of the growing of the ICT (Information Communication Technologies). In addition, the information can be personalised in a way each people can access it individually. Ten years ago, a left-over newspaper on a park bench was a compact piece of information. Today, the newspaper resides on a smartphone in our pockets. In the future, the park bench will still be there, but dramatically changed to an IoT (Internet of things) object, bringing information to the people. Therefore, there is the need to re-think the park bench as an interface. A simple, fundamental point is: the quality of the interface rules the quality of the information. With a special focus on the latter, this chapter discusses how the classical model of the city is enhanced with the senseable city concept and how digital information influences, adopts, transforms and re-configures different objects in urban areas.

Virtual museum enriched by gis data to share science and culture. Church of saint stephen in Umm ar-Rasas (Jordan)

Abstract: Umm ar-Rasas is a Jordan archaeological site, located 30 km southeast of the city of Madaba, in the northern part of Wadi Mujib. It preserves findings dating back the period from the end of 3rd to the 9th century AD and, since 2004, it belongs to the world heritage list of UNESCO. In 2015 a multidisciplinary work was undertaken over the archaeological site, mainly focusing on the Church of Saint Stephen, with the main purpose of enhancing the knowledge and documenting the conservation state of the polychrome mosaic floor, which covers the entire surface of the hall and presbytery. A huge amount of data has been collected, coming from archaeological and historical investigations, geophysics and geodetic inspections and geomatics surveying, which produced also a true orthophoto of the mosaic floor. Data has been organized in a geo-database, facilitating the exchange of information between different actors. Moreover, the management of data within a dedicated Geographic Information System (GIS), has allowed in-depth analysis for understanding the evolution of the iconographic repertoire that, over the centuries, has undergone several disfigurements due to the iconoclastic age. The knowledge of the mosaic has also been vital for the implementation of multimedia applications and for the creation of virtual experiences, in which the information can be conveyed and visualized directly on the virtual reconstruction of the whole archaeological site. The innovation of the proposed work, is therefore in the management of a data flow that can be exploited by different actors through different platforms: experts, thanks to the use of GIS, and visitors with the use of multimedia applications (such as Augmented Reality (AR) or highresolution web visualization) for dissemination purposes, in order to preserve this priceless mankind heritage.

Dissemination in archaeology: a GIS-based StoryMap for Chan Chan

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of exploiting a geographic information system (GIS)-based data management, designed and implemented for an important monumental site. In particular, data collected during the years have been used to create a storytelling experience to disseminate the tangible and intangible heritage of Chan Chan (Peru), the wider site in mud bricks of Latin America. Design/methodology/approach: The paper discusses the steps that have been performed to use the data stored in a GIS, arguing over the importance of sharing the knowledge through web-based tools, and in particular by the implementation of a storytelling. In this context, the data were structured in interoperable forms in order to preserve the universal value of the archaeological site. The exploitation in an all-in-one solution of the archival research, field surveys and planning represents a step forward for let known ancient testimonies to the whole mankind. Findings: The GIS-based inventories represent the backbone for an affordable management of heritage resources. The novelty of the proposed approach lies on the creation of an integrated, accessible and updatable data system sharable on web. Originality/value: The GIS of Chan Chan is an example of documentation of a wide archaeological area (14 km2) with complex and heterogeneous data. The developed web tool makes use of these data which can be queried even by non-expert users. The pipeline of this paper can act as useful guidelines to practitioners and researchers who want to disseminate cultural information.

MODELLING IN HBIM TO DOCUMENT MATERIALS DECAY BY A THEMATIC MAPPING TO MANAGE THE CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE CASE OF “CHIESA DELLA PIETÀ” IN FERMO

Abstract: Relevant, historically, it is the role of the Diocese of Fermo (Italy) in the Vatican organization dedicated to vast ecclesiastical patrimony on the territory of the Marche region. In this context, for the peculiarity of its identity and its property, the object of this study is the “Chiesa della Pietà”. This research starts with the photogrammetric survey to document and analyse the existing condition of the church. The data acquisition provides many scans following a network schema and the photographic survey allows to create orthoimages to make more realistic the 3D representation. Once acquired the geometric and material survey, a series of investigations have been carried out to assess the surface degradation and the material decay of the external façades and internal environments. Furthermore, some structural problems have been occurred, investigating and verifying the presence of advanced stages of deterioration of the wooden structures and the restoration of these structural elements must be mandatory. To take under control the decay and to propose a restoration step, we have arranged the 3D model in HBIM software with different LOD, according to the BIM Forum Level of Development Specification (2016), suitable to develop a well-structured information system. Before the 3D modelling phase, a decomposition of the building is useful to implement a semantic classification of the architectural elements. Basing on a hierarchy of classes and subclasses, the dedicated database organizes the building components assigning an ID-code to the features, putting in evidence materials decay by a thematic mapping.

Abstract: National Strategy For Cultural Heritage 2017-2027 is a Kosovo Government document that aims the enhancement of the system for the protection and preservation of Kosovan cultural heritage. Among the listed goals, one can find the promotion of an integrated data management approach towards cooperation platforms that involve advanced technologies and information systems applied to cultural heritage. In a country with a low technological progress, as Kosovo is, an innovative information management system like HBIM is a huge challenge. This research contributes in opening the debate about the use of HBIM even for historical architecture, illustrating a methodology of information management promoting the conservation and the valorization of a Kosovan ottoman mosque. The workflow pipeline started with the close range photogrammetric survey, obtaining first spherical panoramas and then the wire-frame processed in a 3D modelling environment, suitable to implement the HBIM project. Basing on the accuracy of the data acquisition, the availability of information about the building and the related level of knowledge, we proposed a semantic representation of the complex structure integrating in an HBIM collecting in an "ad hoc" database the geometrical building components, enriched with attributes as images, materials, decay, interventions, etc., linked to each features. Our approach is an example of how efficient semantic classification can be repeated for the analysis and the documentation of other similar ottoman mosque, simplifying the management of construction by a sort of unique and searchable archive. The advantage of the interoperability concept allows the data sharing is now stressed by HBIM.

Identifying the use of a park based on clusters of visitors' movements from mobile phone data

Abstract: Planning urban parks is a burdensome task, requiring knowledge of countless variables that are impossible to consider all at the same time. One of these variables is the set of people who use the parks. Despite information and communication technologies being a valuable source of data, a standardized method which enables landscape planners to use such information to design urban parks is still broadly missing. The objective of this study is to design an approach that can identify how an urban green park is used by its visitors in order to provide planners and the managing authorities with a standardized method. The investigation was conducted by exploiting tracking data from an existing mobile application developed for Cardeto Park, an urban green area in the heart of the old town of Ancona, Italy. A trajectory clustering algorithm is used to infer the most common trajectories of visitors, exploiting global positioning system and sensor-based tracks. The data used are made publicly available in an open dataset, which is the first one based on real data in this field. On the basis of these user-generated data, the proposed datadriven approach can determine the mission of the park by processing visitors' trajectories whilst using a mobile application specifically designed for this purpose. The reliability of the clustering method has also been confirmed by an additional statistical analysis. This investigation reveals other important user behavioral patterns or trends.

A smartphone-based system for outdoor data gathering using a wireless beacon network and GPS data: From cyber spaces to senseable spaces

Abstract: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and mobile devices are deeply influencing all facets of life, directly affecting the way people experience space and time. ICTs are also tools for supporting urban development, and they have also been adopted as equipment for furnishing public spaces. Hence, ICTs have created a new paradigm of hybrid space that can be defined as Senseable Spaces. Even if there are relevant cases where the adoption of ICT has made the use of public open spaces more “smart”, the interrelation and the recognition of added value need to be further developed. This is one of the motivations for the research presented in this paper. The main goal of the work reported here is the deployment of a system composed of three different connected elements (a real-world infrastructure, a data gathering system, and a data processing and analysis platform) for analysis of human behavior in the open space of Cardeto Park, in Ancona, Italy. For this purpose, and because of the complexity of this task, several actions have been carried out: the deployment of a complete real-world infrastructure in Cardeto Park, the implementation of an ad-hoc smartphone application for the gathering of participants’ data, and the development of a data pre-processing and analysis system for dealing with all the gathered data. A detailed description of these three aspects and the way in which they are connected to create a unique system is the main focus of this paper.

A Survey of Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality for Cultural Heritage

Abstract: A multimedia approach to the diffusion, communication, and exploitation of Cultural Heritage (CH) is a well-established trend worldwide. Several studies demonstrate that the use of new and combined media enhances how culture is experienced. The benefit is in terms of both number of people who can have access to knowledge and the quality of the diffusion of the knowledge itself. In this regard, CH uses augmented-, virtual-, and mixed-reality technologies for different purposes, including education, exhibition enhancement, exploration, reconstruction, and virtual museums. These technologies enable user-centred presentation and make cultural heritage digitally accessible, especially when physical access is constrained. A number of surveys of these emerging technologies have been conducted; however, they are either not domain specific or lack a holistic perspective in that they do not cover all the aspects of the technology. A review of these technologies from a cultural heritage perspective is therefore warranted. Accordingly, our article surveys the state-of-the-art in augmented-, virtual-, and mixed-reality systems as a whole and from a cultural heritage perspective. In addition, we identify specific application areas in digital cultural heritage and make suggestions as to which technology is most appropriate in each case. Finally, the article predicts future research directions for augmented and virtual reality, with a particular focus on interaction interfaces and explores the implications for the cultural heritage domain.

Improving spherical photogrammetry using 360°OMNI-Cameras: Use cases and new applications

Abstract: During the last few years, there has been a growing exploitation of consumer-grade cameras allowing one to capture 360 images. Each device has different features and the choice should be entrusted on the use and the expected final output. The interest on such technology within the research community is related to its use versatility, enabling the user to capture the world with an omnidirectional view with just one shot. The potential is huge and the literature presents many use cases in several research domains, spanning from retail to construction, from tourism to immersive virtual reality solutions. However, the domain that could the most benefit is Cultural Heritage (CH), since these sensors are particularly suitable for documenting a real scene with architectural detail. Following the previous researches conducted by Fangi, which introduced its own methodology called Spherical Photogrammetry (SP), the aim of this paper is to present some tests conducted with the omni-camera Panono 360 which reach a final resolution comparable with a traditional camera and to validate, after almost ten years from the first experiment, its reliability for architectural surveying purposes. Tests have been conducted choosing as study cases Santa Maria della Piazza and San Francesco alle scale Churches in Ancona, Italy, since they were previously surveyed and documented with SP methodology. In this way, it has been possible to validate the accuracy of the new survey, performed by means an omni-camera, compared with the previous one for both outdoor and indoor scenario. The core idea behind this work is to validate if this new sensor can replace the standard image collection phase, speeding up the process, assuring at the same time the final accuracy of the survey. The experiment conducted demonstrate that, w.r.t. the SP methodology developed so far, the main advantage in using 360 omni-directional cameras lies on increasing the rapidity of acquisition and panorama creation phases. Moreover, in order to foresee the implications that a wide adoption of fast and agile tools of acquisition could bring within the CH domain, points cloud have been generated with the same panoramas and visualized in a WEB application, to allow a result dissemination between the users.

Abstract: The number of distributed Photovoltaic (PV) plants that produce electricity has been significantly increased, and issue of monitoringand maintaining a PV plant has become of great importance and involves many challenges as efficiency, reliability, safety, and stability.This paper presents the novel approach to estimate the PV cells degradations with DCNNs. While many studies have performedimages classification, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first exploitation of data acquired with a drone equipped with a thermalinfrared sensor. The experiments on “Photovoltaic images Dataset”, a collected dataset, are presented to show the degradation problemand comprehensively evaluate the method presented in this research. Results in terms of precision, recall and F1-score show theeffectiveness and the suitability of the proposed approach.

Abstract: Abstract This paper deals with the development of a geographic information system (GIS), specifically designed for the restoration process of Ascoli Satriano Fortress (an important example of military architecture in the south of Italy), using as entry data its 3D modelling obtained with a standard multi-view stereo (MVS) pipeline. The work described has been developed following a methodological approach, highlighting best practices for the management of different information and the creation of specific thematic maps, demonstrating how a close cooperation between restorers and geomatics experts can be the turnkey for the conservation process of the architectural heritage. In this research, the GIS implementation proposed for the cataloguing and the management of historical buildings serves to define the abacus of the materials and the decay analysis performed by restorers The aim is to create a link between the survey’s output and both quantitative/descriptive information, useful for managing the restoration process in all the steps of the work. The management of an historical building into an integrated system enables all the actors involved in the process to be as much faithful as possible with the real building features.

Automatic Mosaic Digitalization: a Deep Learning approach to tessera segmentation

Abstract: A mosaic, made of small coloured tiles, called tesserae or tessellas, is a form of decorative art to create images and patterns on a surface. One of the first steps to obtain digital mosaics is the segmentation process to separate (identify) tesserae. Then, various tools are necessary to catalog the digitalized scenes, to extract the figures, such as animal or human beings, from the puzzle of small pieces, to geolocalize the segmented objects and to assign a semantic meaning to them. While some mosaic segmentation approaches have already been reported in the literature, currently, mosaic segmentation is still done by human operators, resulting time consuming and error prone. We propose in this paper an automatic approach, based on Deep Learning, to segment the mosaic floor tesserae of the church of S. Stephen in Umm ar Rasas. Our approach allows to obtain automatically and with good reliability the description of the main elements of a mosaic (the tesserae) that are not homogeneous. The experients performed on the collected tesserae dataset yield high accuracies and demonstrate the effectiveness and suitability of our approach.

Abstract: Surveying techniques have increased their pro- ductivity, improving the amount and the quality of Cultural Heritage data for documentation purposes. The reason of this improvement is twofold: on one hand, CH related researches gained more and more attention given the tremendous impor- tance they represent for the whole mankind. On the other, their knowledge and accurate documentation is urgent. Even if there are several acquisition techniques for each scale of representation, there is not still the winning solution for every condition; the consequence is that most of the surveying projects related to large and complex sites integrate multiple sensors and techniques [1]. Towards this direction, producers are introducing in the market sophisticated tools which integrates multiple sensors in an ”all in one solution” that in the literature are defined as combination of methods. One of them, recently introduced, is the SLAM (Simultaneously Localization and Mapping) technology, that has introduced a new system to acquire millions of 3D points in a short time and with good accuracy also in indoor location. In this light, the work that will be described in the article deals with the comparison of dense point clouds obtained with different acquisition techniques (namely TLS and Mobile Mapping), using as a case study a Roman Amphitheater, since, given its complexity, represents a challenging benchmark for such study. For a more detailed documentation of the site and to cope with the lack of imagery information from these latter techniques, a drone flight was performed. The main contributions of the article are: i) testing in a real case scenario a novel tool which integrates different sensors, assessing its suitability for archaeological settings; ii) validating its accuracy w.r.t. other well established techniques; iii) performing the complete mapping of an important ar- chaeological sites, combining terrestrial and aerial acquisition techniques.

Abstract: Geographic Information Systems are a valid support for the scientific activity, not only related to environmental goods, but also for the management of cultural heritage. The combined geomatic techniques give 3D models of the objects, identifying and integrating any information in a useful GIS. In recent years the research has brought GIS systems closer to the third dimension combining them with the growing interest in 3D visualization and analysis. The aims of the research, in collaboration with the Municipality of Cagnano Varano (FG,Italy), are the protection, conservation and enhancement of Idroscalo Ivo Monti, an architectural and archaeological heritage. The choice of a three-dimensional GIS has allowed not only a real description of environment, but also has provided the collection and management of any information related to the building materials and the degradation of them. useful tool to support the restoration works.

Abstract: In 2010, just before the war, professor Fangi made a trip in Syria and it was the occasion to make a fast documentation of some Syrian Cultural Heritage monuments. Most of the images were not taken properly to make a survey, but rather as a photographic report. Nevertheless, the images represent an important source of data, which can be processed in a rigorous manner, following the 4x4 CIPA rules, to obtain a 3D modelling by Spherical Photogrammetry. These surveys could be useful in case of reconstruction and in case of lack of a suitable alternative of metric documentation. Then, with the realization of an open access database it was possible to organize and collect all available data information supporting the documentation and preservation of Syrian monuments, sites and identities, and finally to share this documentation on different web platform.

Abstract: The use of 3D models to document archaeological ndings witnessed to boost in the latest years, mainly thanks to the large adop- tion of digital photogrammetry for the virtual reconstruction of ancient artifatcs. For this reason, the widespread availability of digital 3D objects obliges the research community to face with a hard challenge: which is the best way for allowing visitors being in contact with the real estate of cultural goods? The work described in these pages answers to these questions by describing a novel solution for the enhanced interaction and visualization of a complex 3D model . The installation consists in an autostereoscopic display paired with a remotely connected (with a wired connection) touch-pad for the interaction with the contents displayed in it. The main advantage of using such technology is represented by the fact that one is not obliged to wear cumbersome devices but at the same time one can have a 3D view of the object without any additional aid. The system allows, through a touch-pad, to manage the 3D views and interact with with a very small object that in its virtual dimension is magnied with respect to a classical museum arrangement. The research results, applied to the real case exhibition presented, have proved the innovation and usability of the multimedia solutions, which required the use of complex hardware components and a tricky implementation of the whole software architecture. The digital disruption in the CH domain should be also entrusted in the use of advanced interfaces that at the same time are intuitive and usable interaction methods

Analysis and Processing of Nadir and Stereo VHR Pleiades Images for 3D Mapping and Planning the Land of Nineveh, Iraqi Kurdistann

Abstract: The impressive hydraulic system built by the Assyrian King Sennacherib is composed by different archaeological areas, displaced along the Land of Nineveh, in Iraqi Kurdistan. The extensive project we are working on has the aim of mapping and geo-referencing any kind of documentation in order to design an archaeological-environmental park able to preserve and enhance the archaeological complex. Unfortunately, the area is failing a topographic documentation and the available cartography is not sufficient for planning and documentation purposes. The research work presented in these pages moves towards this direction, by exploiting Pleiadés Very High Resolution (VHR) images (in both nadir and stereo configuration) for an accurate mapping of the site. In more depth, Pleiadés nadir VHR images have been used to perform a pansharpening procedure used to enhance the visual interpretation of the study area, whilst stereo-pair have been processed to produce the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area. Statistical evaluations show the high accuracy of the processing and the reliability of the outputs as well. The integration of different products, at different Levels of Detail within a unique GIS environment, besides protecting, preserving and enhancing the water system of Sennacherib’s, paves the way to allow the Kurdistan Regional Government to present a proposal for the admission of the archaeological complex in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List (WHTL)

Abstract: The documentation of the archaeological heritage through 3D models to know ancient findings, has become a common practice within the international panorama. Using minimal hardware, as well as its ease of use in almost every environmental condition, make 3D sampling solutions based on Multiple View Stereo (MVS) matching and Structure from Motion techniques ideal for on-site documentation of excavations or emergencies. Moreover, the availability of inexpensive platforms for web-based visualization represents great benefit in the field of archaeology, where generally the low budged and the limitation of more complex instruments are a must. The case study presented in these pages, experienced in Petra, Jordan, moves towards this direction. In the close proximity of the El- Khasneh fac¸ade, is situated an excavation where two entrance, well preserved, give access to the Tomb of Pharaoh. The documentation described in these pages has the twofold objective of providing the research community with a priceless dataset, acquired for one of the most important heritage of the world that is partially still unknown and to share on line these computations. This work confirms how cultural heritage documentation and dissemination of architectural rests, that are important for tourism and their interactive visualization, can strongly benefit from the creation of 3D models and their sharing on the web. This particular archaeological setting is an interesting base for investigation, given the complexity of the structure and its precarious condition.

Abstract: The digitization of complex buildings, findings or bas relieves can strongly facilitate the work of archaeologists, mainly for in depth analysis tasks. Notwithstanding, whether new visualization techniques ease the study phase, a classical naked-eye approach for determining changes or surface alteration could bring towards several drawbacks. The research work described in these pages is aimed at providing experts with a workflow for the evaluation of alterations (e.g. color decay or surface alterations), allowing a more rapid and objective monitoring of monuments. More in deep, a pipeline of work has been tested in order to evaluate the color variation between surfaces acquired at different ´epoques. The introduction of reliable tools of change detection in the archaeological domain is needful; in fact, the most widespread practice, among archaeologists and practitioners, is to perform a traditional monitoring of surfaces that is made of three main steps: production of a hand-made map based on a subjective analysis, selection of a sub-set of regions of interest, removal of small portion of surface for in depth analysis conducted in laboratory. To overcome this risky and time consuming process, digital automatic change detection procedure represents a turning point. To do so, automatic classification has been carried out according to two approaches: a pixel-based and an object-based method. Pixel-based classification aims to identify the classes by means of the spectral information provided by each pixel belonging to the original bands. The object-based approach operates on sets of pixels (objects/regions) grouped together by means of an image segmentation technique. The methodology was tested by studying the bas-relieves of a temple located in Peru, named Huaca de la Luna. Despite the data sources were collected with unplanned surveys, the workflow proved to be a valuable solution useful to understand which are the main changes over time.

Abstract: A web-browser allows discovering and navigating between the bas-reliefs. This latter part of the exhibition represents the main novelty and it will be deepening during the dissertation. Abstract: Chan Chan, an archaeological site located at Trujillo, Peru, is a huge historical settlement very large and difficult to visit and some well-conserved architecture, like Huaca Arco Iris, is very far from the core centre of the site. Furthermore many other heavy factors, as illegal excavations, marine salt transported by the wind and the sometime devastating phenomenon of the Ninõ, are the reasons of the lost of many decorative elements, which are covered due to conservation issues. To overcome the aforesaid problems, we designed, developed and realized the museum exhibition called “Esquina Multimedia”, providing the tourists with interactive and enjoyable applications. An Augmented Reality application has been developed in order to discover ancient artefacts that are invisible because covered by the earth (or by protection structures). A web-browser has been specifically designed to show bas-relieves, with HD visualization and with anaglyph stereoscopic view. Herewith, a wall-mounted panel representing a metric 3D reconstruction by an accurate survey of the building helps the user to find the artefact position.

3D visualization tools to explore ancient architectures in South America

Abstract: Chan Chan is a wide archaeological site located in Peru. Its knowledge is limited to the visit of Palacio Tschudi, the only restored up to now, whilst the majority of the site remains unknown to the visitors. The reasons are manifold. The site is very large and difficult to visit. Some well-conserved architectures, such as Huaca Arco Iris, are very far from the core centre. Furthermore, there are heavy factors of decay, mainly caused by illegal excavations, by marine salt and by the devastating phenomenon of El Niño. For these reasons, the majority of the decorative elements are protected by new mud brick walls. Finally, the vastness of the buildings makes difficult to understand their real value, even through a direct visit of the site. In order to overcome the aforesaid problems, we designed, developed and realized the museum exhibition presented in this paper. We named Esquina Multimedia an installation where every corner is aimed to solve a specific problem, providing the tourists with interactive and enjoyable applications. The virtual tour allows reaching also the unreachable areas. An Augmented Reality (AR) application has been developed in order to show ancient artefacts covered by the earth. A web-browser has been specifically designed to show bas-reliefs, with HD visualization, anaglyph stereoscopic view and a 3D virtual model of both the structures and the bas-reliefs. At the same time, a wall-mounted panel representing a metric 3D reconstruction of the building helps the user to find the artefact position. Descriptions of the hardware components and of the software details are presented, with particular focus regarding the implementation of the application, arguing how the digital approach could represent the only answer towards a full exploitation of archaeological sites. The paper also deals with the implementation of a web tool, specifically designed to display and browse 3D-Models.

Abstract: The most relevant aspect of the ICT lays in their ability to enhance communication with (potential) users, transforming the production of public open spaces into an interactive process, and enabling creative community participation and empowerment. Besides a brief introduction to mobile apps as a way of interaction between people, space and technology, the benefits of technologies for both users and planners are discussed. The first analysis shows that ICT enable innovative outdoor social practices, which challenge spatial and social experts to use them in design, policies, and research aiming at the production of more responsive and inclusive urban places.

Abstract: The main aim of this work is to rise the challenge of relentless growth of digital technologies into our daily life. Smart phones, smart watches, tablets, etc and Internet have become common tools is several fields of human activities, connecting, guiding, informing, and in a last stance making people interconnected and informed. Public open spaces (POS) (such as, parks, gardens, squares, plazas) would greatly benefit by this growing availability of relevant geolocated information. Therefore, our aim is to unfold two main questions: how can we use digital technologies to attract people to spend more time outdoors for a more active lifestyle; and what opportunities technology opens to increase knowledge about users and uses of public open spaces? The discussion is backed by experience exchanges carried out within the Cyberparks Project and articulates around the ICT potential to enhance communication among (potential) users, transforming public open spaces production an interactive process. Such improved interactivity, on a turn, enables creative community participation, empowerment and capacity building. Besides a discussion on the mobile technology for human interaction with spaces, this paper presents an overview of the possible technological benefits for users, policy makers, practitioners and planners.

Abstract: Currently, the use of 3D digital acquisition techniques represents the most popular means for the documentation and digitization of archaeological heritage. The advantage of recreating a detailed virtual model of a site is twofold. On the one hand, it provides a support for archaeologists who deal with continuous work of restoration and their associated studies. In fact, the majority of the sites are made of perishable materials, making essential the adoption of fast tool for data acquisition. On the other hand, the different medium of visualization reaches the wider public directly, improving the spread of Cultural Heritage artefacts. The reality-based representation may not be sufficient by itself to convey all the information about a site. We therefore propose an integrated approach based upon a combination of different 3D acquisition techniques for virtual reconstruction of a complex archaeological building. In this paper, a methodology for a low cost acquisition, processing and visualization of data is presented. The aim of this work is to describe a complete workflow for virtual reconstruction, from the acquisition to the model visualization, by integrating spherical photogrammetry and dense reconstruction techniques. This allows one to obtain a model that is metrical and accurate at the same time. Details of the final virtual reconstruction demonstrate the validity of the pipeline. The methodology has been experimented on a typical building called Huaca Arco Iris, situated into the complex of Chan Chan site, an UNESCO archaeological area in Peru. � 2016

Abstract: Latest improvement on mobile devices capabilities definitively changed the way people experience their surroundings. Thanks to the improvement of built in sensors, devices are able to sense the environment at users’ location. The ability to provide contextual services to the visitors is a key aspect to make public parks more accessible, comprehensible end enjoyable. The paper outlines the application of Augmented Reality technologies in a real case scenario. The aim is to equip visitors with an ICT tool able to enhance their perception visiting open spaces and parks. The reporting area chosen for the study case is an Archaeological park, the Cardeto, located within an urban green open space in the outskirts of Ancona, a city in central Italy. Ensuring the success of the experiment has required an hybrid approach, with the main objective of providing visitors with an endless flow of information, anytime and anywhere. To reach this result, a mobile application has been developed, exploiting two different tracking systems: location-based and edge-based. The first one helps users to move along with a network of given Points of Interest disseminated within the park. At the same time, the second system displays a rich set of information each time a user came in close the proximity with artefacts or valuable heritages. This work is part of a wider ongoing project aiming at a better understanding of the potentials inherent the design space for smartphones in context-aware AR applications for tourists. Our experiment demonstrates the validity of purposed methodology as a promising solution for Cultural Heritage purposes.

Smart maintenance of riverbanks using a standard data layer and augmented reality

Abstract: Linear buffer strips (BS) along watercourses are commonly adopted to reduce run-off, accumulation of bank-top sediments and the leaking of pesticides into fresh-waters, which strongly increase water pollution. However, the monitoring of their conditions is a difficult task because they are scattered over wide rural areas. This work demonstrates the benefits of using a standard data layer and Augmented Reality (AR) in watershed control and outlines the guideline of a novel approach for the health-check of linear BS. We designed a mobile environmental monitoring system for smart maintenance of riverbanks by embedding the AR technology within a Geographical Information System (GIS). From the technological point of view, the system's architecture consists of a cloud-based service for data sharing, using a standard data layer, and of a mobile device provided with a GPS based AR engine for augmented data visualization. The proposed solution aims to ease the overall inspection process by reducing the time required to run a survey. Indeed, ordinary operational survey conditions are usually performed basing the fieldwork on just classical digitized maps. Our application proposes to enrich inspections by superimposing information on the device screen with the same point of view of the camera, providing an intuitive visualization of buffer strip location. This way, the inspection officer can quickly and dynamically access relevant information overlaying geographic features, comments and other contents in real time. The solution has been tested in fieldwork to prove at what extent this cutting-edge technology contributes to an effective monitoring over large territorial settings. Abstract: The huge potential of 3D digital acquisition techniques for the documentation of archaeological sites, as well as the related findings, is almost well established. In spite of the variety of available techniques, a sole documentation pipeline cannot be defined a priori because of the diversity of archaeological settings. Stratigraphic archaeological excavations, for example, require a systematic, quick and low cost 3D single-surface documentation because the nature of stratigraphic archaeology compels providing documentary evidence of any excavation phase. Only within a destructive process each single excavation cannot be identified, documented and interpreted and this implies the necessity of a re- examination of the work on field. In this context, this paper describes the methodology, carried out during the last years, to 3D document the Early Neolithic site of Portonovo (Ancona, Italy) and, in particular, its latest step consisting in a photogrammetric aerial survey by means of UAV platform. It completes the previous research delivered in the same site by means of terrestrial laser scanning and close range techniques and sets out different options for further reflection in terms of site coverage, resolution and campaign cost. With the support of a topographic network and a unique reference system, the full documentation of the site is managed in order to detail each excavation phase; besides, the final output proves how the 3D digital methodology can be completely integrated with reasonable costs during the excavation and used to interpret the archaeological context. Further contribution of this work is the comparison between several acquisition techniques (i.e. terrestrial and aerial), which could be useful as decision support system for different archaeological scenarios. The main objectives of the comparison are: i) the evaluation of 3D mapping accuracy from different data sources, ii) the definition of a standard pipeline for different archaeological needs and iii) the provision of different level of detail according to the user needs.

Abstract: The paper outlines how different state-of-the-art survey workflows can be applied to map the Early Neolithic site of Portonovo - Fosso Fontanaccia (Ancona, Italy), establishing a straightforward, fast and often low-cost workflow for excavation recording. Different survey experiences are carried out to map the five domed ovens (VI millennium BC) excavated during the 2013 field campaign, ranging from digital photogrammetric to terrestrial laser scanner data acquisition and from open source to commercial processing. The option of quick, well-tested and often low cost/open source survey pipelines makes the research experience a case-study highlighting new approaches that can be integrated in the general excavation methodology and additional interesting features such as model/data reusability. The produced photorealistic 3D models together with all the other digital data are integrated inside a GIS environment satisfying the need to manage on situ the documentation of on going excavations.

Multimedia discovery of the Leonardo's Vitruvian Man

Abstract: The dissemination and exploitation of cultural heritage milestones by using multimedia and interactive technologies continuously and quickly grows capturing the attention of academia and companies. It is necessary to adopt the state of the art technologies to present and make bi-directional the interaction of users with cultural heritage objects. In this work, we present two different applications of novel technologies applied to the Vitruvian man of Leonardo. The first application is the mirror that exploits a 3D depth sensor to compare the proportions of a user with the perfect ones of the Vitruvian man. The second application is a complex interaction between a complete novel 3D model of the Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man, sounds and image effects inside a 360-degrees hologram. These two systems are the results of interaction between academia and the 3D EVE spin-off company.

Abstract: In this paper we present a methodological workflow developed within the "ArcheoFano" project, improving collection, organization and management of a GIS data structure for the urban-archaeological Roman centre of Fano town. In this context, the proposed methodology is aimed to build up an integrated and multipurpose system. The starting point is data collection by means of archival (for documentation purposes) and highresolution survey techniques (for metrical purposes); afterwards, a conceptual data model organizes archaeological data and realizes an easily updating solution that automatically produce short reports to share with the users. The open source QGIS is used to develop the spatial extension with the aim to manage 2D/3D numerical cartography and detailed 3D model (using open tools such as Virtual Terrain and Enviro). The final geo-database contains all the useful information to support urban planners decision-making. The ability to structure data in a maintainable way helps to ensure cross-disciplinary cooperation in the management and protection of heritage resources. Lastly, an Augmented Reality (AR) experience is carried out. Linked directly to the geo-database, AR allows a quick real time visualization of GIS layers and 3D models, showing the way forward smart tourism and virtual museum applications. This technology is needful when the archaeological findings must be conceived due to conservation issues.

Abstract: In order to improve the framework for 3D modeling, a great challenge is to obtain the suitability of Building Information Model (BIM) platform for historical architecture. A specific challenge in HBIM is to guarantee appropriateness of geometrical accuracy. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of a whole HBIM approach for complex architectural shapes, starting from TLS point clouds.  A novelty of our method is to work in a 3D environment throughout the process and to develop semantics during the construction phase. This last feature of HBIM was analyzed in the present work verifying the studied ontologies, enabling the data enrichment of the model with non­geometrical information, such as historical notes, decay or deformation evidence, decorative elements etc. The case study is the Church of Santa Maria at Portonovo, an abbey from the Romanesque period. Irregular or complex historical architecture, such as Romanesque, needs the construction of shared libraries starting from the survey of its already existing elements. This is another key aspect in delivering Building Information Modeling standards. In particular, we focus on the quality assessment of the obtained model, using an open­source sw and the point cloud as reference. The proposed work shows how it is possible to develop a high quality 3D model semantic­aware, capable of connecting geometrical­historical survey with descriptive thematic databases. In this way, a centralized HBIM will serve as comprehensive dataset of information about all disciplines, particularly for restoration and conservation. Moreover, the geometric accuracy will ensure also reliable visualization outputs.

Abstract: In archaeology, findings are completely freed from the earth which had been covering for centuries but in most cases they must be cov- ered again in order to protect them. In this paper we present a augmented reality (AR) experience for the visualization of 3D models in-situ, giv- ing the possibility to see conceived findings. The experience was carried out for archaeological purposes in Chan Chan, the America’s greatest pre-Columbian town. From 2001, our mission is operating at Chan Chan carrying on a wide action of documentation, conservation and exploita- tion. We propose an interesting workflow: image acquisition, 3D pho- togrammetric reconstruction, 3D simplification, AR visualization. Also a knowledge base applied to archaeological sites is here presented.

Abstract: The research in the Cultural Heritage field is growing and needing of different working platforms and cross-curricular collaborations to handle information, improve knowledge and create planning strategies to improve and share historical, artistic and architectural values. The proposed work is a part of a wider inter-university and international researching project developed with the support of the Italian Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, The Ministry Of Education, University and Research and Vietnamese authorities and concerning the monumental sites of the Champa Reign (Vietnamese Central/Southern coast). This temples’ complex dates back to the period between the twelfth Century and the fifteenth Century. It was forgotten and damaged during the centuries but nowadays represents a system with cultural and tourist significance. The aim of this research is to make a useful contribution to architectural documentation of the Champa Civilization and, more general, to heritage preservation by means a cultural awareness campaign. The research follows a methodological approach gathering from the critical analysis/documentation to following proposal of possible scenarios for the heritage sustainability. Within this workflow a key point was the virtual museum held in Hue in April 2013.

Finalizing a low-cost photogrammetric workflow: from panoramic photos to Heritage 3D documentation and visualization

Abstract: The research aims to optimize a workflow of architecture documentation: starting from panoramic photos and tackling available instruments and technologies the aim is to propose an integrated, quick and low-cost solution of Virtual Architecture. The broader research background shows how to use spherical panoramic images for the architectural metric survey. The input data (oriented panoramic photos), the level of reliability and Image-based Modeling methods constitute an integrated and flexible 3D reconstruction approach: from the professional survey of cultural heritage to its communication in virtual museum. The proposed work results from the integration and implementation of different techniques (Multi-Image Spherical Photogrammetry, Structure from Motion, Dense Image Matching and Image-based Modeling) with the aim to achieve high metric accuracy and photorealistic performance. Different documentation chances are possible within the proposed workflow: from the virtual navigation of spherical panoramas to complex solutions of simulation and virtual reconstruction. VR tools make for the integration of different technologies and the development of new solutions for virtual navigation. Image-based Modeling techniques allow 3D model reconstruction with photo realistic and high-resolution texture. High resolution of panoramic photo and algorithms of panorama orientation and photogrammetric restitution vouch high accuracy and high-resolution texture. Automated techniques and their following integration are subject of this research. Data, advisably processed and integrated, provide different levels of analysis and virtual reconstruction joining the photogrammetric accuracy to the photorealistic performance of the shaped surfaces. Lastly, new solutions of heritage interactive and immersive communication are tested as inevitable visualization consequence of previous experimental results.

InSAR decorrelation to assess and prevent volcanic risk

Abstract: SAR has several strong key features: fine spatial resolution/precision and high temporal pass frequency. Moreover, the InSAR technique allows the accurate detection of ground deformations. This high potential technology can be invaluable to study volcanoes: it provides important information on pre-eruption surface deformation, improving the understanding of volcanic processes. As a downside, SAR measurements are influenced by artifacts such as atmospheric effects or bad topographic data. Correlation gives a measure of these interferences, quantifying the similarity of the phase of two SAR images. Different approaches exist to reduce these errors but the main concern remains the possibility to correlate images with different acquisition times: snow-covered or heavily-vegetated areas produce seasonal changes on the surface. Working with images with very fast acquisition time partly limits decorrelation. Though, images with a short temporal baseline aren't always available and some artifacts affecting correlation are time-independent. This work studies correlation of pairs of SAR images focusing on the influence of surface and climate conditions, especially snow coverage and temperature. Furthermore, the effects of the acquisition band on correlation are taken into account, comparing L-band and C-band images. All the chosen images cover most of the Yellowstone caldera (USA) over a span of 4 years, sampling all the seasons. Interferograms and correlation maps are generated. To isolate temporal decorrelation, pairs of images with the shortest baseline are chosen. Correlation maps are analyzed in relation to snow depth and temperature. Results obtained with ENVISAT and ERS satellites (C-band) are compared with the ones from ALOS (L-band). Results show a good performance during winter and a bad attitude towards wet snow (spring and fall). During summer both L-band and C-band maintain a good coherence with L-band performing better over vegetation.

Abstract: The Lençóis Project began in 2004 as an architectural documentation project for the historic site of Lençóis located in Chapada Diamantina region in Bahia State (Brazil). It has generated a huge multimedia database that plays a vital role for the conservation and restoration of the buildings, to preserve the memory of this heritage. In order to achieve best results a set of digital technologies is required. As this project has no specific subvention or grants, the use of low cost digital technologies, mainly Spherical Digital Photogrammetry, was welcome. The survey, carried out in 2013, and was used to update the documentation about Avenida 7 de Setembro and the Prefeitura Municipal.

Abstract: The main goal of the SIT-REM project is the design and the development of an interoperable web-GIS environment for the information retrieval and data editing/updating of the geobotanical and wildlife map of Marche Region. The vegetation, plant landscape and faunistic analysis allow the realization of a regional information system for wildlife-geobotanical data. A main characteristic of the SIT-REM is its flexibility and interoperability, in particular, its ability to be easily updated with the insertion of new types of environmental, faunal or socio-economic data and to generate analyses at any geographical (from regional to local) or quantitative level of detail. Different query levels obtain the latter: spatial queries, hybrid query builder and WMSs usable by means of a GIS. DEM automatic extraction on Rio de Janeiro from WV2 stereo pair images

Abstract: The use of three-dimensional data has become, for a lot of mapping applications, very important. DEM are applied for modelling purposes, i.e. the 3D city model generation, but principally for imagery orthorectification. In aerial photogrammetry is well known the suitable use of stereo imagery to produce an accurate DEM, but the limits of the process (cost, schedule of data collection, highly technical staff) and the new advanced digital image processing algorithms have open the work scenario to the remote sensing data. This research has wanted to investigate the possibility to obtain accurate DEMs by means of automatic terrain extraction algorithms implemented in Leica Photogrammetry Suite (LPS) from stereoscopic remote sensing images collected by DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-2 (WV2) satellite. The DEM of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and the correspondent digital orthoimages have been the results.

Abstract: The Cultural Heritage disappears at a rate higher than we are able, not only, to restore but also to document: human and natural factors, negligence or worst, deliberate demolitions put in danger the collective Architectural Heritage (AH). According to CIPA statements, the recording is important and has to follow some guidelines. The Architectural and Urban Heritage data have to be historically related, critically assessed and analyzed, before to be organized according to a thematic structure and become available for further uses. This paper shows the experiences developed by the Laboratory of Computer Graphics applied to Architecture and Design (LCAD), at the Architecture School of the Federal University of Bahia (FAUFBA), Brazil, in cooperation with the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM, DICEA Department), Italy, in documenting architectural heritage. The research set up now has been carried out in the historical sites of Bahia, as Pelourinho neighborhood, a World Heritage by UNESCO. Other historical sites are in the plan of this survey, like the cities of Lençóis and Mucugê in Chapada Diamantina region. The aim is to build a technological platform based on low cost digital technologies and open source tools, such as Panoramic Spherical Photogrammetry, Spatial Database, Geographic Information Systems, Three-dimensional Geometric Modeling, CAD technology, for the collection, validation and dissemination of AH.

Discovering Chan Chan: Modern Technologies for Urban and Architectural Analysis

Abstract: Since 2002, the Italian Mission of CNR-ITABC has been operating in the archaeological complex of Chan Chan (Peru), which is the largest pre-Columbian settlement entirely built with adobe. In 1989 Chan Chan was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main purpose of the work is aimed at the conservation, documentation and use of the site and of the territory that is related to Chan Chan from a historical and cultural point of view. The urban structure of Chan Chan, which is spread over a surface of 14 km2, has a number of buildings which characterizes the town at both an architectural (ciudadelas, huacas, huachaques) and decorative level (bas-reliefs, geometrical motifs). In order to achieve our research goals, we had to arrange for the combined use of various analysis techniques that would provide both urban and architectural information about the town. The data we obtained allowed us to make a more up-to-date interpretation of the urban fabric and revealed intriguing details regarding the construction phases of one of its palaces which will be helpful both for the planning of the Archaeological Park and the restoration project of the Palacio Rivero.

Abstract: In an attempt to stop the degradation of the Complejo Arqueologico Chan Chan, the Peruvian government, pressed by UNESCO, in 2000 approved the Plan Maestro de conservación y manejo, redact by Instituto Nacional de Cultura, (today Ministerio de Cultura). The Plan Maestro has a number of projects and sub-projects aimed to enhancing the complex and its territory with the purpose of helping the socio - economic development of the population. The MIPE intends to support the actions foreseen by the Plan Maestro participating to its revision and updating and following three main objectives: the planning of the Archaeological Park of Chan Chan, the restoration and the virtual visit of Palacio Rivero and other peculiar architectonic typologies and the baking of local handicraft and tourism by mean of training courses arranged also with the help of the international cooperation. In order to achieve these objectives, taking into account the impressive dimensions of the site, it was very important to take advantage of the potentiality of new methodologies of investigation: the remote sensing techniques and the ICT processes to organize and archive the geodatabase; the modern acquisition techniques, such as laser scanner, to arrange a 3D surveying, to reconstruct in virtual way the emergencies and by means other multimedia solutions to spread the whole site by virtual visits.

Gis-Based Smart Cartography Using 3d Modeling

Abstract: The research aim is to 3D structure and organize a numeric cartography for GIS and turn it into CityGML standardized features. The work is framed around a first phase of methodological analysis aimed to underline which existing standard (like ISO and OGC rules) can be used to improve the quality requirement of a cartographic structure. Subsequently, from this technical specifics, it has been investigated the translation in formal contents, using an owner interchange software (SketchUp), to support some guide lines implementations to generate a GIS3D structured in GML3. It has been therefore predisposed a test three-dimensional numerical cartography (scale 1:500, generated from range data captured by 3D laser scanner), tested on its quality according to the previous standard and edited when and where necessary. Cad files and shapefiles are converted into a final 3D model (Google SketchUp model) and then exported into a 3D city model (CityGML LoD1/LoD2). The GIS3D structure has been managed in a GIS environment to run further spatial analysis and energy performance estimate, not achievable in a 2D environment.

Road pavement crack automatic detection by MMS images

Abstract: The research topic was to test different feature extraction methods to localize road pavement cracks useful to construct a spatial database for the pavement distress monitoring. Several images were acquired by means of a line scan camera that assembled in a Mobile Mapping System (MMS) allows tracking directly the position of the images by a GPS-INS system. Following an automatic digital image processing was performed by means of several algorithms based on different approaches (edge detection and fuzzy set theory). The detected cracks were described with some parameters in relation to some shape characteristics (dimension, typology, direction), which are necessary to recognize the gravity of the road pavement conditions. The edge detection techniques tested in this research allowed identifying fatigue cracking or alligator cracking and also thin linear cracks in images with strong radiometric jumps by applying filters, gradient functions and morphological operators. The snake approach was one of them, in particular the type called Gradient Vector Flow (GVF). Another approach was based on the fuzzy theory. The advantage of this method is that the pixels, necessary to identify the cracks in road pavement, are darker than their surroundings in an image. The last stage was the pavement distress spatial database collection. The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) has allowed localizing the raster data and consequently the vector features of the detected cracks, associating into the table their attributes too. The proposed approaches allow to automatically localize and classify the kind of road pavement crack.

Decorrelation of L-Band and C-Band Interferometry to volcanic risk prevention

Abstract: This work studies correlation of pairs of SAR images focusing on the influence of surface and climate conditions, especially snow coverage and temperature. Furthermore, the effects of the acquisition band on correlation are taken into account, comparing L-band and C-band images. All the chosen images cover most of the Yellowstone caldera (USA) over a span of 4 years, sampling all the seasons. Interferograms and correlation maps are generated. To isolate temporal decorrelation, pairs of images with the shortest baseline are chosen. Correlation maps are analyzed in relation to snow depth and temperature. Results obtained with ENVISAT and ERS satellites (C-band) are compared with the ones from ALOS (L-band). Results show a good performance during winter and a bad attitude towards wet snow (spring and fall). During summer both L-band and C-band maintain a good coherence with L-band performing better over vegetation.

The Metric Documentation of Cham Towers in Vietnam by Spherical Photogrammetry

Abstract: The Università Politecnica delle Marche is charged of the study, survey and documentation of the Chan towers in Vietnam. The towers are spread near the coastline from latitude 16° 30’, to latitude of 10° 56’. The Champa civilization flourished from 8th century till 17th century produced the Cham towers, places of religious worship. The ancient Cham people created a developed culture expressed in the architecture in the towers, which were Buddhist temples. Roughly there are six different architectonic styles and two different layouts in plan. One lay-out is that one main tower is surrounded by smaller service buildings, like walls, doors, gates; the other layout is a set of three aligned towers. We carried out the documentation with three different techniques, laser scanning, dense point clouds generation with SfM (Structure from Motion) algorithm, and mainly by Panoramic Spherical Photogrammetry (PSP). Laser scanning is indeed the best instrument but sometimes its availability is very limited for different practical and logistic reasons. The point cloud generation produced good results, but it has some problems and limitations of management too. On the other hand PSP is very quick technique in the taking phase, but the restitution is rather slow. PSP is suitable for a good metric documentation, making the Cham tower project the main project of documentation executed with spherical photogrammetry.

Abstract: Il lavoro proposto vuole ottimizzare una metodologia di documentazione dell’architettura che, a partire dalle fotografie panoramiche, si misura di volta in volta con gli strumenti e le tecnologie a disposizione per proporre una soluzione integrata, speditiva e low-cost di Virtual Architecture. La tecnica sviluppata nasce in un contesto di ricerca più ampio che da anni studia la possibilità di usare le immagini panoramiche sferiche per il rilievo metrico dell’architettura (Fangi, 2007-2012). I dati a disposizione (panoramiche orientate), l’affidabilità raggiunta e metodi di Image-based Modeling (d’Annibale, 2009-2011) sono alla base della proposta di una tipo di ricostruzione 3D integrata ed estremamente flessibile: dal rilievo professionale del patrimonio culturale alla sua comunicazione nei musei virtuali. La soluzione proposta si sviluppa tramite l’integrazione e implementazione di diverse tecniche (Fotogrammetria Sferica, Structure From Motion, Image-based Modeling) e si pone l’obiettivo di raggiungere alti livelli di precisione metrica del rilievo e resa fotorealistica dei modelli ricostruiti. L’intera procedura risulta essere accessibile grazie alla scelta di utilizzare strumenti low-cost e adattabile allo scopo finale.

Hybrid Object-based Approach for Land Use /Land Cover Mapping using High Resolution Imagery

Abstract: Traditionally, remote sensing has employed pixel-based classification techniques to deal with Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) studies. Generally, pixel-based approaches have been proven to work well with low spatial resolution imagery (e.g., Landsat or System Pour L’Observation de la Terre (SPOT) sensors). Now, however, commercially available high spatial resolution images (e.g., aerial Leica ADS40 and Vexcel UltraCam sensors, and satellite IKONOS, Quickbird, GeoEye and WorldView sensors) can be problematic for pixel-based analysis due to their tendency to oversample the scene. This is driving research towards object-based approaches. The paper proposes a hybrid classification method with the aim of incorporating the advantages of supervised pixel-based classification into object-based approaches. The method has been developed for medium scale (1:10.000) LULC mapping using ADS40 imagery with 1 m Ground Sampling Distance (GSD). First, spatial information is incorporated into a pixel-based classification (AdaBoost classifier) by means of additional texture features (Haralick, Gabor, Law features), which can be selected “ad hoc” according to optimal training samples (“Relief-F” approach, Mahalanobis distances). Then a rule-based approach sorts segmented regions into thematic CORINE Land Cover (CLC) classes in terms of membership class percentages (a modified Winner-Takes-All approach) and shape parameters. Finally, ancillary data (roads, rivers, etc.) are exploited to increase classification accuracy. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid approach allows the extraction of more LULC classes than conventional pixel-based methods, while improving classification accuracy considerably. A second contribution of this paper is the assessment of classification reliability by implementing a stability map, in addition to confusion matrixes.

Change Detection applying Landscape Metrics on High Remote Sensing Images

Abstract: Haiti earthquake produced a big effort in the remote sensing data collection. Many international surveying organizations were involved to collect, process and use the spatial information to rescue the population. Here I illustrate a change detection methodology based on landscape metrics, derived by the landscape ecology and implemented in FRAGSTAST software. Some of these metrics were applied to Pre and Post event classified images (Quickbird and IKONOS). The attention was focused on 10 test areas, characterized by different spatial patterns and urban structures. The land cover classification (Urban and Other) was provided by an unsupervised K-Means algorithm in ILWIS open source software. The final results and their temporal comparison have allowed to localize the earthquake damages and the occurred changes, also analyzing the fragmentation of the urban morphology. The GIS management of the information have improved the thematic map production, resulting very useful for the damage assessment.

Abstract: Recently, there is an increasing demand for information on actual land use/land cover (LU/LC) from planning, administration and scientific institutions. Remote sensing combined with GIS tools can give quick reply providing timely information products in different geometric and thematic scales. Anyway the effort to make the land use map by visual interpretation is still very high and cannot keep up with the development pace. On the other side automatic procedures do not assure to follow detailed and well- structured land use nomenclature if it is not performed by a customized learnig system. This new approach is required to incorporate automated image classification to human image understanding. In this context the here proposed T-MAP application combines segmentation tools with an hybrid classification technique (a rather new trend in image classification) and a rule-based thematic categorization depending on information both at pixel and object level. Its rule-based system lets the user define thematic assignments by building rules based on feature attributes (i.e. membership cover class percentage, confusion index, etc.) and on landscape analysis (spatial metrics and pattern indicators), taking, in this way, also advantage of the human land use understanding. The output is a thematic map characterized by a custom-designed legend and a reasonable performance in terms of accuracy, number of extractable classes and legend detail.

Abstract: The most extensive use of Remote Sensing data is in land cover/land use (LCLU) studies by means of automated image classification. The general objective of this research is to develop an automatic pixel-based classification methodology with the aim to produce a Regional land use map congruent with the CORINE Land Cover legend. Starting point are detailed ground data, already gathered fostering interoperability among several Regional bodies’ DBs and high resolution multi-spectral IKONOS imagery. In the light of land mapping, there are two main features related to IKONOS imagery: lack of spectral information (4 spectral bands) and high spectral variability (high spatial resolution). This results in problems in terms of class information extraction especially using pixel-based image classification methods in which spatial information existing between a pixel and its neighbours is not used. To overcome these deficits, the use of vegetation indexes (NDVI feature and TDVI masks) and texture (GLCM and edge-density features) is investigated with respect to its impact on land cover/land use classification. The developed spectral/textural classification schema is compared with the classical approach using only spectral information. An accuracy assessment is carried out which shows that image data with 4 IKONOS spectral bands plus NDVI band plus 6 texture bands achieve an accuracy of 80.01% compared to 63.44% of accuracy achieved by using the few spectral bands only. Furthermore it allows the discrimination of 10 CLC classes. Experimental results show how, starting from available but also binding data (IKONOS imagery and available Regional ground data), a classification schema can be developed with enhanced performance and strong relation to the specific setup.

Abstract: A Land Cover/Land Use (LCLU) Information System is proposed as a new dynamic and flexible approach to describe landscape objects. It is able to give a deeper and more realistic thematic description by storing membership land cover attributes for each polygon automatically extracted and classified by the T-MAP software. The proposed approach can overcome the traditional “hard” classification by taking directly into account “fuzzy” cover components and making the classification approach more bounded with the polygon characteristics and their changes. The LCLU Information System can be easily integrated with different databases, making it suitable for different nomenclatures and further analysis, regarding environmental indexes, class updating and classification stability assessment

Pixel, Object and Hybrid Classification Comparisons

Abstract: The choice of the best classification approach for thematic map generation relies on many factors, such as image resolution and minimum mapping unit. The generalized GIS-ready products derived from the results of pixel-based approaches and the availability of higher resolution imagery have directed research towards object-based classification approaches. In this paper we present the superior performance of a hybrid methodology that combines the results of automatic segmentation with the land cover information derived from a pixel classification by means of the Winner Takes All (WTA) algorithm. Land use and land cover results obtained through this hybrid classification approach are compared with those of a One Against All (OAA) object-oriented classification approach.
