Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Non destructive evaluation of plasters on historical thin vaults by scanning laser Doppler vibrometers was attempted in this article. The aim was to investigate the state of conservation of historical plasters hanged from thin light vaults made by plaster and reeds that often carried on their lower surface frescoes and stuccos of high historical, artistic and architectural value. SLDV could represent an effective support for the diagnostic process of these construction system. In particular, the first results underline that processing the data so asto estimate the so-called Operational Deflection Shapes (ODS) does not seem to be helpful as a damage indicator, on the contrary modal analysis seems to be effective in localizing damages present in the specimen.

Abstract: The progressive population aging provokes an increase of importance in safety aspects for the elderly and the people with disabilities that are housed in care homes and hospitals. Current regulations denote an inadequate approach to safety problems connected to possible evacuation due to events like earthquakes, floods, fires. The law approach implicates that patients are directly carried out by health workers assistants in evacuation. However, many patients can autonomously evacuate, helped by specific facilities for way finding and not assisted by the medical staff. Our research is intended to design “guidance” system for these categories, and to inquiry how these facilities interact with people and influence their motion. The understanding and the simulation of behaviors of this category become essential in order to reach these goal.. This work proposes a multi-agent model for evacuation simulation, based on the Social Force motion approach and on experimental data. This paper focuses on joining group behaviors for autonomous elderly. The validation concerns various quantities describing group motion phenomena. The model will be integrated including aspects connected with eventual disabilities in motion for patients.

Durability of nano-engineered TiO2 self-cleaning treatments on limestone
CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS
Autore/i: Munafo', Placido; Quagliarini, Enrico; Goffredo, GIOVANNI BATTISTA; Bondioli, F.; Licciulli, A.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) colloidal suspensions applied by spray-coating have been used to deposit transparent self-cleaning coatings on stones with the aim of preserving the original aesthetic features of historical and monumental architectures. Travertine was chosen as the reference substrate. Compatibility with travertine and self-cleaning efficiency were analysed by indoor laboratory tests. The self-cleaning ability of TiO2 is mostly dependant on the photocatalysis generated by ultraviolet light. The stones were artificially aged through different procedures and the photo-activity of TiO2 was evaluated before and after the ageing. Results seem to encourage the use of nano-structured TiO2 for preserving stone during time.

Abstract: The goal of this study was to explain the influence of the total porosity and the surface roughness on the susceptibility of clay bricks to biodegradation by phototrophic microorganisms. In addition, this correlation was studied on both specimens treated with TiO2 nanocoating and untreated control specimens. The effect of UV intensity on the photocatalytic power of TiO2 was also investigated. An accelerated fouling test was performed by sprinkling a suspension of Chlorella mirabilis and Chroococcidiopsis fissurarum on sample surfaces. These two test strains were chosen because their representativeness on building clay brick façades subjected to biofouling. The gradual superficial accumulation of algal biomass on treated and control specimens was evaluated by means of image analysis and colour measurement. Two specimens' parameters, namely porosity and roughness, were examined. Results showed that both the specimen microstructure and roughness of the surface play a key role in the colonization of clay bricks because they were able to provide more nutrient to the algal cells anchored to the surface. The TiO2 nanocoating was able to inhibit the biofouling of clay bricks irradiated with UV-A light, except in the case of high porous rough specimens

Self-cleaning materials on Architectural Heritage: compatibility of photo-induced hydrophilicity of TiO2 coatings on stone surface
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; Bondioli, F.; Goffredo, GIOVANNI BATTISTA; Licciulli, A.; Munafo', Placido
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) can be used to realize transparent self-cleaning coatings on stone surfaces as an active and preventive protection system, limiting cleaning and maintenance actions, reducing their costs in Architectural Heritage. This self-cleaning ability is due to photo-induced hydrophilicity on treated surfaces. The aim of this investigation is to analyze this effect, since it could bring to a greater water absorption, a potential source of damage for stone surfaces. Titania sol, obtained by sol-gel and hydrothermal processes, was deposited on travertine by spray coating, in two different ways. Water absorption by capillarity, static contact angle and a specific surface water absorption analysis were assessed before and after the TiO2 treatments. The effects of deposited amount of titania on the characteristics of treated surfaces were evaluated. It was shown that there were no evident changes in the substrate reactivity without ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, while it seems that hydrophilicity due to UV light does not lead to higher water absorption, thus encouraging the use of TiO2 coatings in the field of Architectural Heritage. However, before widely applying this conservative treatment, some further researches are recommended in order to better assess its durability and sustainability.

Evaluation of inhibitory effect of TiO2 nanocoatings against microalgal growth on clay brick façades under weak UV exposure conditions
BUILDING AND ENVIRONMENT

Abstract: Microalgal growth largely affects the aesthetical properties of building façades worldwide. It causes biodeterioration of building materials and, in a later stage, it can compromise integrity of the elements and their durability. Recently, the use of nanotechnology to prevent the growth of microalgae is rising. One of the most widespread and promising material is titanium dioxide (TiO2). Photocatalytic properties of TiO2 inhibit biofouling of microalgae when this coating is stimulated by UV radiation coming from the sun or from artificial light. In this study, the biocide effect of TiO2 coatings applied on clay brick specimens under weak UV radiation was assessed. Results revealed that TiO2 nanocoating was not able to fully prevent microalgal biofouling, but under optimal UV exposure conditions for the growth of microalgae it efficaciously prevented the adhesion of these microorganisms on the treated substrates through the formation of a superficial water film. This property resulted in a good self-cleaning efficiency of TiO2.

The combined use of ITC and LDV for the investigation of historical thin vaults
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; Esposito, Enrico; DEL CONTE, A.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Correct interventions on cultural heritage should have as their starting point an accurate diagnosis of its health, in order to design a compatible care. NDTs seem to offer a promising way in this sense. This paper deals with the combined use of IRT and LDV for the investigation of historical thin vaults made by timber arches, reeds, and plaster and it demonstrates that they can effectively support a deeper knowledge of these vaults as it concerns the presence of detached areas among the different mortar layers of the plaster and of detached areas among the mat of reeds and the nailed connection with the wooden bearing elements. This is a very important goal because these ND methodologies can be employed only on the lower surface of these vaults and sufficiently far from it, and they do not have any mechanical interaction with the historical, eventually frescoed or stuccoed, plaster, thus saving money and time.

Dynamics and failure mechanisms of ancient masonry churches subjected to seismic actions by using the NSCD method: the case of the medieval church of S. Maria in Portuno
ENGINEERING STRUCTURES
Autore/i: Lancioni, Giovanni; Piattoni, Quintilio; Lenci, Stefano; Quagliarini, Enrico
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method (NSCD), implemented in the LMGC90 code, has been applied to the study of the seismic response of a medieval church, the S. Maria in Portuno’s Church at Corinaldo (AN, Italy). According to this model, the church masonry has been modelled as a system of rigid blocks, whose sliding motions are governed by the Signorini’s impenetrability condition and by the dry-friction Coulomb’s law. The NSCD method has proved to be a powerful tool for investigating the dynamics induced by ground seismic accelerations. Indeed the numerical results have given a deep insight into the seismic vulnerability of the church, highlighting several possible failure mechanisms. Moreover, the influence of the friction coefficient, which is related to the quality of the mortar, and the effects of connections between adjacent walls have been investigated.

Abstract: To evaluate the self-cleaning and de-polluting properties of a transparent titania coating, in this investigation a titanium dioxide based suspension was deposited by spray coating on travertine, a porous limestone largely used as building material. To assess compatibility with stone substrates, microstructure analysis, color and gloss measurements, static contact angle analysis and two different water absorption tests were carried out. Self-cleaning and de-polluting activities were assessed by the use of rhodamine B decoloration and NOx degradation tests. The results showed good compatibility with stone surfaces and evident efficiency, allowing the use of titania coatings for real outdoor applications.

Tensile characterization of basalt fiber rods and ropes: A first contribution

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Basalt is an emerging material, whose use is increasing in constructions and civil applications as an alternative to glass, carbon or aramidic fibers. Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) rods and Basalt Fiber (BF) ropes are going to be used as an alternative to glass, carbon or aramidic fibers for strengthening purposes but few information about their mechanical performances is present in literature and standard test protocols are missing. Thus, this work tries to provide a test protocol for tensile characterization of BF ropes and a validation of the test protocol used for tensile characterization of not-basalt-FRP rods applied on BFRP rods. This is a very important issue from an engineering standpoint in order to evaluate their applicability for architectural heritage retrofitting, as, for example, in repointing (rods), or in innovative techniques, such as the one actually still being tested in our laboratories, that is aimed to strengthen historic masonry (ropes). Experimental test results obtained are shown. Results seem to confirm that BFRP rods and BF ropes could be a good alternative to other similar products.

On the damage of frescoes and stuccoes on the lower surface of historical flat suspended light vaults
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; Lenci, Stefano; Seri, Elena
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In many historical and monumental Italian buildings, frescoes or stuccoes of artistic and historical value are present on the lower surface of flat light vaults, made by wooden arches, reeds and plaster. These vaults are often suspended by wooden or metallic ties to the upper bearing structures. When differential settlements of the wooden arches happen (i.e.: due to a bad working of their hangings) cracks appear on these precious surfaces. This paper experimentally and numerically investigates on this issue, pointing out which constructive parameters mainly influence the cracking behaviour of the frescoed or stuccoed lower surface, and thus providing guide lines for designing compatible conservation and retrofitting interventions.

Smart surfaces for architectural heritage: Preliminary results about the application of TiO2-based coatings on travertine
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; Bondioli, F.; Goffredo, G. B.; Licciulli, A.; Munafo', Placido
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The development and application of self-cleaning treatments on historical and architectural stone surfaces could be a significant improvement in conservation, protection and maintenance of Cultural Heritage. In this paper, a TiO2-based coating has been investigated in order to evaluate its possible use as a self-cleaning treatment. This coating was obtained by a sol-gel and a hydrothermal (134 ◦C) processes and then it was applied on travertine (a limestone often used in historical and monumental buildings) in two ways, obtaining a single-layer and a three-layer treatment, respectively. In order to verify its potential use in the field of Cultural Heritage, the maintenance of appearance properties of the treated travertine surfaces was monitored by colour and gloss analyses. Besides, de-pollution and soiling removal tests were carried out under ultraviolet-light exposure to evaluate photo-induced effects and self-cleaning efficiency. Results seem to allow the use of TiO2-based treatments on historical and architectural surfaces made up by travertine, where de-pollution and self-cleaning photo-induced effects are well evident, maintaining their original visual appearance. Anyway, before applying TiO2-based coatings as conservative treatments, further tests are needed especially on their durability, that is mandatory for Cultural Heritage applications. On-site test in an urban environment and accelerated test by weatherometer are currently under way.

Experimental analysis and modelling of the mechanical behaviour of earthen bricks
CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS
Autore/i: Piattoni, Q.; Quagliarini, Enrico; Lenci, Stefano
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In this paper the mechanical properties of earthen bricks produced by manual compaction have been investigated by a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Several compression tests have been executed on specimens of various composition and different dimensions, with the purpose of understanding the role of volume fractions of earth, sand and straw fibre, and the influence of the size effect. An important goal is the application of predictive models of the elastic properties to the considered material, and its assessment. An empiric linear correlation between the compressive strength and the experimental Young’s modulus is proposed.

Cob construction in Italy: some lessons learned from the past
SUSTAINABILITY

Abstract: Raw earth is a construction material unknown to most people. Nowadays, raw-earth constructions are an area of growing interest, both for rescuing the heritage and for a rediscovered environmentally friendly building and eco-sustainability material. However, because raw-earth constructions are a forgotten technique, we find problems of a lack of skilled people at all levels in this area, from designers to masons, as well as problems of how to carry out compatible conservation works on earthen heritage. This paper tries to fill the gap for a peculiar historic earthen building technology, namely cob (or bauge), which is present in Macerata in the center of Italy. Results are presented on regaining possession of the material and constructional aspects and their initial structural resources, and guidelines are given on how to improve the manufacturing process to reuse the cob technique for construction and for how to accurately work on it for a compatible and sustainable conservation

Study on some sorption properties of treated bentonites for their potential use as a moisture regulating system for the preservation of historical wooden elements
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: D'Orazio, Marco; Quagliarini, Enrico
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: We report the first results of a research study aimed at developing a new strategy for the conservation of wooden structural elements present in historical buildings, based on moisture regulating systems. As has been happening for artefact preservation in museums, the idea is to develop systems based on the ability of some highly hygroscopic materials to moderate variations in relative humidity. These materials could adsorb and release moisture to reduce the extreme values of humidity in the micro-climate, for example between wooden beams and masonry. In order to experimentally verify this possibility using current, low cost and easy handling building materials, 5 bentonite samples were laboratory processed to improve their adsorbing properties by means of treatment with sodium carbonate at 3 concentrations: 2, 3 and 4% by weight. The effectiveness of ion exchange between sodium carbonate and bentonite was controlled by measuring the swelling volume of the bentonites. All the samples (n = 15) were tested for their hygroscopic properties. Adsorption isotherms were measured at 25 ◦C, using desiccators with silica gel, saturated salt solutions and bi-distilled water. A comparison between isotherms of one of the lower hygroscopic treated sample of bentonite and of a sample of wood and of a sample of brick and some numerical analyses with the Delphin code were made in order to evaluate the potential use of this bentonite as a moisture regulating system for the preservation of historical wooden elements. Results show that it seems to be possible to use bentonites as a moisture buffering material in order to reduce moisture content in wooden beams at least during their adsorption phase. It remains to investigate their desorption phase and their behaviour if they be in a saturation condition. Further studies are currently under way.

Mechanical properties of adobe walls in a Roman Republican domus at Suasa
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; Lenci, Stefano; Iorio, M.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Adobe is a construction technique that uses raw earth mixed and moulded to form sun-dried blocks to realize a bearing wall. The recent discovery of adobe walls belonging to a Republican domus sited in Suasa (Ancona, Italy) was the starting point of the present work. The research was developed through an experimental approach, in order to characterize the mechanical behavior of this type of walls: firstly some adobe blocks similar to the original ones were reproduced by using the soil directly came from the archaeological site near the adobe walls and adding straw to reduce hygrometric shrinkage and coarse sand, taken from a local quarry, as a stabilizer, as Romans were used to do. Then, after a seasoning period of 4 months, four adobe walls were produced to be tested by compression and shear. From compression tests, maximum strength, first cracking compression stress, Young modulus and breaking manner were evaluated. As well, compression results show a possible two-storey structure of the earthen Republican domus. In fact, it appears that the stress from the two-storey load analysis is lower than the first cracking compression stress. From the shear tests, a proportional law seems to regulate the relation between the maximum value of the mean tangential tensions and the vertical compression the sample is subjected to. This could be the starting point for a future seismic analysis.

The influence of natural stabilizers and natural fibers on the mechanical properties of ancient Roman adobe bricks
JOURNAL OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Abstract: Adobe is a construction technique that uses raw clayey earth mixed and moulded to form blocks to realize a bearing wall. Romans were also used to add sand or coarse sand into the mixture to “degrease” clay and to allow to make it into a mixture. Fibres such as straw were often added into the mixture. Anyway, ancient home brick-makers have not had a chance to do scientific experimental investigation on the balance of ingredients and the optimisation of this production. This paper elaborates on how workability and mechanical properties of Roman ancient adobe earthen bricks change by varying the percentage of an on situ soil, straw and coarse sand into the mixture to produce them. The comparisons were also made with the only-earth samples. Breaking manners of all the samples were also compared.

Light vaults with frescoes or stuccoes strengthened by gfrp, the role of the reinforcement on intrados strains: first experimental data
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
Autore/i: Quagliarini, Enrico; D'Orazio, Marco
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In many historical buildings built between the 16th and 19th centuries, light vaults are present made by wooden structures and mats of reeds and plaster carrying frescoes or stuccoes of architectural and historical value on the lower surface. Some of these structures today are in a precarious state of conservation, and a wide program of rehabilitation has started, especially with the use of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bandages on the upper surface. This article experimentally evaluates the effect that GFRP extrados bandages may have on the mechanical behavior of this system. In particular, the main issue is to evaluate how GFRP extrados reinforcement affects the intrados surface strains of the fresco or stucco plaster. Results show that GFRP reinforcement changes the mechanical behavior of the original system. In particular, under a particular load condition, intrados plaster surface — and thus frescoes or stuccoes — may deform more in the reinforced case than in the original case. Thus, looking forward to have more experimental results, GFRP strengthening should be carefully applied to this historic system to avoid frescoes and stuccoes on the intrados surface that could more easily crack for loads that were carried with no fissures before GFRP strengthening.
