Abstract: Laboratory experiments were performed in the wave flume of the Laboratorio di Idraulica e Costruzioni Marittime of the Universita Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy) to study the hydrodynamic performance of coastal protection structures made of a new type of geotextile sand containers (GSCs). Such structures are used as softer and flexible alternatives to traditional hard coastal defenses made of concrete or rubble mound material. The GSC structures can also be used as temporary coastal protections during the winter period. The physical model reproduced two main configurations: in the former one, the GSCs were used as coastal revetments with three different slopes. In the latter one, the GSCs were applied to make detached submerged breakwaters with different submergences and berm widths. The geometric scale of the models was 1:10, and the weight of each GSC in the prototype was 5 t. The geotextile material of the containers and the wave characteristics were reproduced by using the Reynolds and the Froude similarity criteria, respectively. Reflection coefficients and hydraulic stability behaviors for the revetments, as well as transmission coefficients and piling-up amount for breakwaters, were obtained.

Semi-Analytical Model for the Evaluation of Shoreline Recession Due to Waves and Sea Level Rise
WATER

Abstract: The climate change process is leading to an increase in the sea level and the storm intensity. The associated shoreline recession can damage coastal facilities and also beaches protected by submerged/emerged breakwaters whose defense action can become ineffective. The application of cross-shore numerical models does not allow the performance of long-term analyses. In this paper, a semi-analytical model for the evaluation of shoreline recession due to waves and sea-level rise for free and protected beaches is proposed. The model is an extension of the Dean's approach in which some limitations on the beach profile are overcome and the effects of breakwaters on the wave height (wave transmission) and on the water level (piling-up) are considered. The model takes into account a wide range of parameters for wave, sea level, beach profile, and breakwater characteristics. Among the breakwater parameters, the freeboard and the berm width are found to mainly affect the shoreline recession. For submerged breakwaters, an optimal value of the freeboard can be computed depending on the sea level and the offshore wave characteristics. The results of the model are then used to find prediction relations of the shoreline recession, with r(2) > 0.99, for both free and protected beaches, depending on the main hydrodynamic/geometrical characteristics.

Coastal Submerged Structures Adaptation to Sea Level Rise over Different Beach Profiles
ITALIAN JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT
Autore/i: Marini, Francesco; Mancinelli, Alessandro; Corvaro, Sara; Rocchi, Stefania; Lorenzoni, Carlo
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The paper focuses on the analysis of the sea level rise and storms effects on natural or nourished beach profiles protected by submerged breakwaters. The increase in terms of intensity and frequency of extreme sea storms, and water levels produced by climate change, could lead to a deviation from the original trend of the beach. Typical Adriatic beaches will be considered as realistic study cases and a submerged structure for coastal protection of a natural or artificial (nourishment) beach is analysed in order to identify its resilience and its design adaptation. Different scenarios are taken into account, according to the 2019 special report of IPCC on climate change. A numerical model is here provided to evaluate beach response to wave set-up and sea level rise in the case of any beach profile protected by submerged breakwaters. The present model can provide useful information for the adaptation design of an existing defence submerged breakwater against coastal flooding and beach erosion. The shoreline position change, Δy, is evaluated by a large number of simulations varying both wave parameters (wave height Hi, wave length L) and the geometry of breakwater (submergence |Rc| berm width B, structure height hc). Different scenarios of sea level rises, as a consequence of climate change, and of storm conditions are considered in performing numerical simulations.

Abstract: The present study provides an extensive analysis on the hydrodynamics induced by a vertical slender pile under wave action. The authors carried out the study both experimentally and numerically, thus enabling a deep understanding of the flow physics. The experiments took place at a wave flume of the Università Politecnica delle Marche. Two different experimental campaigns were performed: In the former one, a mobile bed model was realized with the aims to study both the scour process and the hydrodynamics around the cylinder; in the latter one, the seabed was rigid in order to make undisturbed optical measurements, providing a deeper analysis of the hydrodynamics. The numerical investigation was made by performing a direct numerical simulation. A second order numerical discretization, both in time and in space, was used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations while a volume of fluid (VOF) approach was adopted for tracking the free surface. The comparison between experimental and numerical results is provided in terms of velocity, pressure distributions around the cylinder, and total force on it. The analysis of the pressure gradient was used to evaluate the generation and evolution of vortices around the cylinder. Finally, the relation between scour and bed shear stresses due to the structure of the vortex pattern around the pile was assessed. It is worth noting that the physical understanding of this last analysis was enabled by the combined use of experimental data on scour and numerical data on the flow pattern.

Abstract: We discuss the contribution of the research groups that work at UNIVPM in the field of infrastructure engineering to the design of resilient hydraulic and transportation infrastructures and related solutions for the protection of the environment. After recalling the long history of research and engineering intervention of the groups of Hydraulics and Transportation Infrastructures of UNIVPM, we show how the activities of such groups are becoming of increasing importance in response to the growing request of innovative solutions for resilient infrastructures (e.g. coastal protection and maritime structures, road and airport pavements) and environment protection (e.g. coastal and river flood, air pollution, waste recycling and materials reuse). Such activities have been recently boosted by the resources made available to the two groups through the “Dipartimenti di Eccellenza” award, which largely focuses on the issue of engineering for resilient built and natural environments. A projection in the future of the activities of above is also proposed.

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The paper presents a performance-based approach for the design of flexible breasting dolphins equipped with marine fenders, often used in jetties belonging to offshore oil terminals. Since the distance of the breasting system to the mooring one and to the oil terminal is generally limited for serviceable and operational issues, the proposed design methodology, based on the kinetic energy approach, assumes a predetermined displacement for the dolphin, as well as a desired performance of the fender, and allows evaluating the stiffness of the flexible system required to achieve the desired energy absorption capacity. The design procedure accounts for the dolphin-fender interaction, as well as for the soil-embedded dolphin interaction, and it is specialised considering the common technical solutions adopted in the design of breasting dolphins. The approach is applied to a hypothetical case study consisting of a new berthing structure for a coastal terminal located on the Middle Adriatic Sea, in Italy, presenting non-ideal conditions for the installation of flexible dolphins. Applications demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the role of the dolphin-fender interaction in withstanding the berthing actions, making it possible to design a flexible berthing structure also in the case of relatively shallow water depths.

Hydro- and morpho-dynamics induced by a vertical slender pile under regular and random waves
JOURNAL OF WATERWAY PORT COASTAL AND OCEAN ENGINEERING-ASCE

Abstract: This paper proposes an experimental study of the hydro- and morpho-dynamics induced by a slender vertical pile fitted into a sandy seabed and forced by sea waves in finite waters. The scour depth at the pile and the seabed morphology around it were measured and analyzed for both regular and random wave forcing. Scour depths due to regular waves were compared to those predicted in a previous study, revealing good agreement. The maximum scour depth occurred at the lateral side of the pile for waves characterized by a Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) number smaller than 7–8 and behind the pile for waves with KC>7–8. Such a result revealed an asymmetric effect on the scour depth because of the weaker reversal flow. This behavior was more evident for nonlinear waves being crests larger than troughs and, as a consequence, vortices, responsible for the scour processes, became even more energetic around crest stages. To better understand the dynamics in front of, around, and behind the cylinder, pressure measurements were obtained to evaluate the generation and evolution of vortices. The pressure data showed that the adverse pressure gradient around the pile was higher than on the upstream of the pile. The analyses of the pressure data seemed to confirm that, if the forcing was only due to waves, the effect of the lee-wake vortices on the scour depth around the cylinder was stronger than that due to the horseshoe vortices. Finally, the practical stochastic method proposed by previous authors to compute the maximum scour depth around a vertical pile exposed to random waves was verified. The best adaptation between measured and predicted scour depths was obtained by taking into account approximately half of the highest waves (instead of one-tenth) over the threshold; such a condition is still cautionary for a practical point of view. A simplification of the previously discussed methodology was proposed in which the characteristic wave that generates the scour depth is defined.

Medium-term dynamics of a Middle Adriatic barred beach
OCEAN SCIENCE

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In recent years, attention has been paid to beach protection by means of soft and hard defenses. Along the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea, sandy beaches are the most common landscape feature and around 70% of the Marche region's coast (central Adriatic) is protected by defense structures. The longest free-from-obstacle nearshore area in the region includes the beach of Senigallia, frequently monitored in the last decades and characterized by a multiple bar system, which represents a natural beach defense. The bathymetries surveyed in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 show long-Term stability, confirmed by a good adaptation of an analyzed stretch of the beach to the Dean-Type equilibrium profile, though a strong short-to medium-Term variability of the wave climate has been observed during the monitored periods. The medium-Term dynamics of the beach, which deal with the evolution of submerged bars and are of the order of years or seasons, have been related to the wave climate collected, during the analyzed temporal windows, by a wave buoy located about 40ĝ€km off Senigallia. An overall interpretation of the hydrodynamics, sediment characteristics and seabed morphology suggests that the wave climate is fundamental for the morphodynamic changes of the beach in the medium term. These medium-Term time ranges during which waves mainly come from NNE/ESE are characterized by a larger/smaller steepness and by a larger/smaller relative wave height, and seem to induce seaward/shoreward bar migration as well as bar smoothing/steepening. Moving southeastward, the bar dimension increases, while the equilibrium profile shape suggests the adaptation to a decreasing sediment size in the submerged beach. This is probably due to the presence of both the harbor jetty and river mouth north of the investigated area.

Simple Physical Models to Simulate the Behavior of Buckling-Type Marine Fenders
JOURNAL OF WATERWAY PORT COASTAL AND OCEAN ENGINEERING-ASCE

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper presents a simple physical model for the numerical simulation of the behavior of buckling-type marine fenders. The proposed model is characterized by four parameters and is derived starting from similarities between the unstable behavior of marine fenders and shallow arches. In this model, the large displacements solution expressing the relationship between the model displacements and reaction force is determined in a nondimensional form, and the model parameters are calibrated to minimize residuals between real and predicted normalized reaction force–deflection curves. By considering an in-series arrangement of two elementary physical models, the approach can be also used to simulate the behavior of parallel-motion fenders. The proposed model can be directly implemented in commercial computer programs for structural analysis to study interactions arising between buckling-type marine fenders and flexible berthing structures. In this paper, the model effectiveness in capturing the behavior of fenders and parallel motions systems is evaluated through comparisons of results, both in terms of reaction force and absorbed energy, with data of real devices, obtained from three different manufacturers. Results demonstrate the model efficiency and suitability for reproducing the behavior of a wide range of devices.

Abstract: The Misa River on the Italian Adriatic coast is typical of the rivers that drain the Apennine Mountain range. The focus of this study, conducted in the late summer of 2013 and mid-winter of 2014, was to contrast the general wintertime-summertime dynamics in the Misa River estuarine systemrather than investigate specific dynamical features (e.g. offshore sediment transport, channel seiche, and flocculation mechanisms). Summertime conditions of the Misa River estuary are characterized by low freshwater discharge and net sediment deposition whereas, in the wintertime, the Misa River and estuary is characterized by high episodic freshwater discharge and net erosion and sediment export. Major observed differences between wintertime-summertime dynamics in the Misa River and estuary are a result of seasonal-scale differences in regional precipitation and forcing conditions driven largely by the duration and intensity of prevailing wind patterns that frequently change direction in summertime while keep almost constant directions for much longer periods in wintertime, thus generating major sea storms. Sediment deposition was observed in the final reach of the Misa River and estuary in the summertime. However, in the wintertime, large flood events led to sediment erosion and export in the final reach of the Misa River and estuary that, in conjunction with storm-wave-induced mud transport, led to sediment deposition at the river entrance and in the adjacent nearshore region. The seasonal cyclic pattern of erosion and deposition was confirmedwith bathymetric surveys of the final reach of the estuarine region. A critical component for the balance between summertime deposition and wintertime erosion was the presence of an underlying mat of organic deposits that limited the availability of sediments for erosion in winter, when massive debris transport occurs. Further, suspended cohesive sediments flocs were subjected to smaller hydrodynamic stresses in the summertime favoring depositionwithin the estuary. Conversely, during wintertime storms, flocswere subjected to larger hydrodynamic stresses favoring breakup into smaller flocs and deposition outside the estuary.

Abstract: The hydrodynamics of an estuarine environment characterized by cohesive sediments, has been studied through a pair of experimental campaigns performed at the mouth of the Misa River. The Misa River flows from the Apennine Mountains and enters the Adriatic Sea in Senigallia, a tourist town located on the Mid-East coast of Italy. The estuary of the Misa River has characteristics of a field-scale laboratory; the final reach is highly engineered with containment structures. Consequently, it was chosen as a suitable site for the experiments undertaken during the EsCoSed (“Estuarine Cohesive Sediment”) Project. The estuarine environment of the Misa River was observed during both summertime and wintertime experiments. The hydrodynamics was monitored using both Eulerian (e.g., bottom moored platforms at both the river-bed and sea-bed with high-resolution ADCPs recording velocity profiles) and Lagrangian (e.g., surface drifters) instrumentation, allowing for the characterization of the flow field during very different flow conditions. The climate occurring before and during the investigated periods has also been analyzed through use of numerical simulations, wave buoy measurements, and tide gauges. A comparative analysis between summertime and wintertime conditions, focused on wave-current forcing and local estuarine hydrodynamics, is underway. The preliminary results highlight the control of wind direction on the observed hydrodynamics. During the summertime the wind frequently changes direction. Conversely, during wintertime the wind direction remains fairly constant leading to severe storms. The extreme wintertime events generate intense sediment transport driving morphologic change.

Experimental study of the short-term efficiency of different breakwater configurations on beach protection
JOURNAL OF OCEAN ENGINEERING AND MARINE ENERGY

Abstract: A campaign of experimental tests on a 2D movable-bed physical model, reproducing an Italian beach on the Adriatic Sea, has been performed in the wave flume of the “Laboratorio di Idraulica e Costruzioni Marittime” of the Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy), with the aim to assess the fundamental features of various breakwater configurations to be used in a beach-defence system typical of sandy, low-coastline beaches. Three emerged and three submerged configurations of rubble-mound detached breakwaters, for beach protection, placed at different distances from the shore, were tested, as well as a free beach configuration. The short-term hydrodynamic performances of the different configurations were assessed using as forcing some typical real-life intense sea-storm conditions. Wave transmission and beach protection efficiency under various intense wave conditions were obtained and related to some dimensionless parameters, amongst which a recently introduced one, χ, that combines both wave and breakwater properties. Transmission coefficients were found to be about 0.4 for emerged breakwaters and in the range 0.5–0.8 for submerged breakwaters. A net damping coefficient, defined as the wave height decay solely due to the effect of the breakwater, was measured as 0.2 for submerged breakwaters and 0.4 for the emerged ones. Further, submerged breakwaters induce an inshore mean water superelevation that increases with χ, whilst it decreases in the case of emerged breakwaters. Wave transmission is well represented by existing literature relations for both emerged and submerged breakwaters. Emerged breakwaters are more protective than submerged ones, but, at the same time, are more sensitive to changes in structure dimensions or positions. This is confirmed by the analysis of the momentum flux within the nearshore region, which is much larger for the submerged breakwaters. Such structures induce large swash-zone motions and sediment transport, comparable to those occurring at an unprotected beach.

Abstract: Abstract. In the recent years attention has been paid to the beach protection by means of soft and hard defenses. Along the Italian coasts of the Adriatic Sea, sandy beaches are the most common landscapes and around 70 % of the Marche-Region coasts (central Adriatic), is protected by defense structures. The longest free-from-obstacle nearshore area in the Region includes the beach of Senigallia, characterized by a multiple barred beach, frequently monitored during the last decades. This suggests a slight influence of wave forcing on the long-term profiles, which seems to only depend on the sediment size. Further, the medium-term dynamics of the submerged bars and their geometric features have been related to the wave climate collected by a wave buoy located 40 km off Senigallia during the analyzed temporal windows. An overall interpretation of the complete dynamics, i.e. hydrodynamics (buoy data), sediment characteristics (equilibrium-profile A parameter) and morphodynamics (bathymetric surveys), suggests that the wave climate is fundamental for the morphodynamic changes of the beach in the medium term: waves coming from NNE/ESE are characterized by a larger/smaller steepness and induce seaward/shoreward bar migration, as well as bar smoothing/steepening. Moving southward, the bar dimension increases, while the equilibrium profile suggests a decrease of the sediment size in the submerged beach, this probably due to the presence of both harbor jetty and river mouth North of the investigated area.

Abstract: As part of the Estuarine Cohesive Sediments (EsCoSed) project, a field experiment was performed in a highly engineered environment, acting as a natural laboratory, to study the physico-chemical properties of estuarine sediments and the associated hydro-morphodynamics during different seasons. The present contribution focuses on the results obtained from the summertime monitoring of the most downstream part of the Misa River (Senigallia, Italy). The measured hydrodynamics suggested a strong interaction between river current, wave forcing and tidal motion; flow velocities, affected by wind waves traveling upstream, changed significantly along the water column in both direction and magnitude. Surficial salinities in the estuary were low in the upper reaches of the estuary and exceeded 10 psu before the river mouth. Montmorillonite dominated the clay mineral assemblage, suggesting that large, low density flocs with high settling velocities (> 1 mms(-1)) may dominate the suspended aggregate materials.

Abstract: In this paper, which can be regarded as a companion of that by Corvaro et al. (2010), experimental results on the internal flow kinematics of waves which propagate on different types of beds, focusing on the nearbed dynamics induced by a porous bed, are illustrated and analyzed. The porous bed induces a major attenuation in the upstream-to-downstream direction of both wave height (≈ 30%) and internal flow velocity (≈ 50% for the maximum and minimum phases). The relationship between the wave height and the internal flow attenuation has been analyzed by means of wave energy arguments. We also found that the averaged reduction of mean flow between the smooth and porous-bed cases is approximately of 45% and 55%, respectively, for the horizontal and vertical velocity components. The stronger reduction of the vertical velocity is due to a significant variation of this velocity profile with respect to what occurs on an impermeable bed. An optical technique is used to extract the flow velocity from suitable video images; the wave dynamics on the porous medium is analyzed by evaluating the mean wave flow, the turbulence and the vorticity fields over the layer. The turbulence, indirectly characterized in terms of instantaneous velocity spectra, is found to be largely confined within the bottom boundary layer, located at a position deeper than the peaks of the mean flow. From the analyses of the instantaneous velocity spectra a clear anisotropy and inhomogeneity are found for the nearbed turbulence. This is confirmed by the presence, in the bottom boundary layer, of elongated coherent vortical structures whose intensity is the maximum during the wave crest and trough phases.

Fluid-particle interaction and generation of coherent structures over permeable beds: an experimental analysis

Abstract: We study the dynamics of the oscillatory bottom boundary layer (BBL) that develops at a porous bed under the action of propagating water waves (also known as “ventilated BBL”). In particular, experimental tests of a ventilated BBL generated over a permeable bed made of regular plastic spheres are analysed. With the purpose of characterizing typical dynamics of nearshore waves evolving over dissipative seabeds, we focus on one specific forcing condition, characterized by large nonlinearities and vorticity generation, and expect that such dynamics be qualitatively similar also for other wave regimes. Particle tracking enables an accurate definition of the hydrodynamics generated over the porous medium with specific focus on Eulerian velocity and vorticity fields and on Lagrangian particle trajectories. Nearbed velocity components are strongly influenced by the bed configuration (sphere caps) and are characterized by small-scale oscillations due to the presence of coherent structures over the interstices. Counter-rotating vortex sheets are generated and evolve during the entire wave period; their thickness grows rapidly when flow injection from the bed occurs, while it remains constant under the influence of in-bed flow suction. The evolution of near-bed particles is influenced by strain or vortex-dominated regions. When the intensity of the vortices just outside the BBL is large (generally after flow inversion), the momentum associated to the rotation of the lower layer of vortices in the BBL is comparable with that of the passive tracers, hence the particles are captured and their original trajectories are modified, jumping to a different layer. On the contrary when strain regions are dominant, particles are restricted in the same vorticity layer until sweep or ejection turbulent processes are observed and anomalous particle transport occurs from lower to higher vortex layers and vice versa. The latter occurs during the entire wave cycle, becoming the dominant process, while the former occurs before flow inversion and close to the porous bed. This result reveals that nearbed small-scale phenomena are weakly influenced by the wave mean flow. A detailed description of fluid suction and injection is proposed in terms of the mean flow dynamics (at wave scale), while the actual inflow/outflow of particles at the bed is seen to depend on local, small-scale flow properties. Suction and injection are generated during positive and negative water surface elevations and either squeeze or expand the flow downward/upward. The suction/injection perturbations contribute to the triggering of sweep and ejection events. Suction is mainly concentrated very close to the bed, injection is rapidly transported above the BBL, but the highest turbulence occurs in correspondence of suction events.

Abstract: The role of sediment particle dynamics on the overall mechanics of flow-sediment-pipeline interactions has been investigated on the basis of dedicated laboratory experiments, of which one sample case has been analyzed in detail to provide a significant insight in the fundamental dynamics. Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) has been used to study the seeded flow and the sediment particle dynamics. Turbulent structures around the pipeline have been characterized in terms of the spanwise component of the vorticity, of the Okubo-Weiss parameter and of the Reynolds stresses. It is shown that the vortical structures which dominate the flow around the pipeline generate sweeps and ejections associated to clockwise/anticlockwise rotating vortices. Clockwise vortices are observed downstream of the pipeline during flow acceleration phases (positive flow), anticlockwise vortices shed upstream of the pipe during flow deceleration phases (negative flow). These structures are seen to largely influence the sediment dynamics near the bed, in particular their entrainment from the bed with particles captured by ejections and, settling to the bed with particles captured by sweeps. The presented results highlight the important influence of turbulent structures in the erosion process around the pipeline.

Abstract: A hydro-morphodynamic numerical model is illustrated as a novel contribution to the investigation and prediction of nearshore and riverine flows and seabed changes forced by waves and currents. The model includes a robust hydrodynamic solver for the integration of the nonlinear shallow water equations (NSWE) and a rather flexible solver for the resolution of the Exner equation (used to evaluate the morphological evolution of the seabed). A detailed analysis is given of existing and novel procedures for the solution of the morphodynamic problem. Coupling of NSWE and Exner equations and updating of the solution is made by means of a sequential splitting scheme. The model has been validated by reproducing both analytical and numerical solutions, available in the recent literature, as well as an in-house laboratory experiment. The simulation of existing theoretical solutions has revealed the model performs well, especially in the prediction of the seabed evolution due to either bed-load or suspended-load transport forced by dam-break and swash-type events. The latter ones are seen to force both erosion and accretion despite the weak hydro-morphodynamic coupling. The comparison between solver results and experimental data is also encouraging, the solver reproducing well the main seabed features forced by irregular waves.

Abstract: A comparative analysis is performed on the wave energy dissipation efficiency on various coastal protection devices. In-house experimental data on the performance of two innovative coastal defence methods and of traditional submerged breakwaters have been used. The analysis provides a quantitative comparison of the efficiency of wave dissipators based on either wave-breaking turbulence, near-bed turbulence, or inside-seabed turbulence decay. The comparison is made on the basis of wave height decay patterns described as a function of suitable dimensionless parameters. The dimensionless volume of maximum turbulence decay is found to be a useful parameter for the analysis. Efficiencies in reducing the intensity of the incident waves are measured by the wave transmission coefficient, which is found to range between 0.4 and 1.0. Submerged breakwaters were found to be the most efficient wave dissipators, especially for large waves, while comparable efficiencies are provided by the three mechanisms under analysis if the flow is forced by moderate waves.

On the wave damping due to a permeable seabed

Abstract: Laboratory experiments were performed to study the wave damping induced by a porous bed. During the propagation of waves over a porous medium the wave characteristics change: a significant wave height attenuation of about 20–30% is observed and, in almost all cases, an increase in wavelength. The wave decay is found to depend on the wave characteristics like the wave height, the wavelength and the wave shape. We have also studied the influence of the geometric properties of the porous bed (i.e. thickness and length) on the wave dissipation. It is found that the attenuation of the wave height increases with the permeable bed thickness and that there is a maximum wave dissipation for a length of the porous seabed equal to 2.0–2.5 times the wavelength. A comparison is also made of our findings with available literature results. A parametric study of the wave damping has been performed by varying the values of the resistance coefficients derived by both literature and experiments. Literature analytical models have been applied by using the resistance coefficients that better describe our flow conditions. All models in use underpredict the observed wave attenuation for any sensible values of the resistance coefficients.

Abstract: The working features of innovative coastal defense structures that can dissipate the energy of incoming waves by the action of large-scale bottom unevennesses rigid blades covering the lower half of the water depth were investigated by means of a laboratory experimental campaign. The goal of the study was to characterize the ability of the structures to efficiently reduce the wave height with a minimal change in the mean water superelevations. Similar wave height reductions were achieved for both vertical and inclined blades; their efficiency was slightly superior to that of traditional submerged rubble-mound breakwaters of the same cross-shore extension. For the incident waves examined, very low mean water elevations were observed inshore of the structures, with the inclined blades producing the smallest values. These results suggest that the structures analyzed here could represent an alternative to submerged rubble-mound breakwaters from a hydrodynamic point of view to protect coastlines prone to erosion with minimal risk of dangerous rip currents.

Abstract: A comparative assessment of available formulae for the water setup inshore of submerged breakwaters is made on the basis of a wide and varied dataset derived from basin and flume laboratory experiments. Formulae derived from a simplified view which does not account for the horizontal flow circulation provide a large overestimate _up to one order of magnitude_ of the smaller setup values. A much better overall approximation of the measured data is obtained through formulae that consider the setup as part of a complete flow description, be it partially or fully accounting for the horizontal flow motion.

Abstract: Horizontal mixing of shallow coastal flows is studied with a specific focus on the role played by large-scale horizontal eddies (macrovortices). Within the classic depth-averaged Nonlinear ShallowWater Equations (NSWE) framework, generation of such macrovortices can be described through one single mechanism for which lateral gradients of shock-type solutions introduce vorticity in the flow. This mechanism is intensely activated when waves break over discontinuous topographic features like natural longshore sand bars or man-made submerged breakwaters. Description of macrovortex-induced mixing is given on the basis of numerical solutions of the NSWE and interpreting the results of specifically-designed laboratory experiments. Deterministic results concerning the generation/evolution of macrovortices are obtained and statistics of passive tracers are used to interpret the overall dynamics in terms of 2D turbulence theory. Preliminary results indicate differences in the mixing features of flows induced by isolated and arrays of submerged breakwaters. A discussion is also proposed on possible approaches for improving our knowledge/modeling of such type of mixing.

Abstract: The series of papers on the flow dynamics due to wave-induced macrovortices is completed with a statistical analysis of the mixing of the shallow flows occurring around submerged structures used for coastal protection. This is investigated with specific focus on the role played by large-scale horizontal eddies shed in coastal areas by waves breaking corresponding to topographic features like submerged breakwaters. As in Part 2, conditions due to isolated or arrays of breakwaters are studied. Analysis of particle statistics is used to determine both the features of the induced quasi-twodimensional flow and to derive general properties. In particular three distinct regimes are found to characterize the flow evolution. Asymptotic regimes for small and large times share in any of the features of typical ‘ballistic’ and ‘Brownian’ regimes. Focus is mainly placed on properties of the ‘intermediate time’ regime which are seen to depend on the chosen topographic configuration. In agreement with the deterministic results of Part 2, we find that, because of an intense longshore current, an isolated breakwater induces a larger dispersion than that due to an array of breakwaters, characterized by a rip current. Moreover, for the same topography, the diffusivity grows with the local wavelength. Comparison with field data suggests that results of scaled-down laboratory experiments reproduce well natural mixing conditions. A simple formulation of absolute diffusivity, to be used in practical applications related to environmental quality management, is, finally, proposed.

Abstract: We investigate, within the framework of the nonlinear shallow water equations (NSWE), the generation and evolution of large-scale eddies with vertical axis (macrovortices hereinafter) which are responsible for much of the horizontal mixing occurring at the boundaries between the main channel and the flood planes of a compound channel. We show that the mechanism of generation of vorticity is essentially inviscid and is analogous to that occurring at a curved shock. Numerical experiments performed by means of a recently developed shock-capturing model for the solution of the NSWE, and described in Brocchini et al. (2001), clarify some features of macrovortices generation and allow us to quantify the momentum transfer across the channel.

Abstract: In this and the companion paper (Part 2) we examine experimentally, computationally, and analytically the behaviour of breaking-wave-induced macrovortices during startup conditions. Widely separated breakwaters and rip current topographies are chosen as opposite ends of the parameter space. Part 1 examines generation mechanisms using phase-resolving and phase-averaged approximations, and suggests several simple predictive relations for general behaviour. Vortex trajectories and shedding periods for wave breaking on widely spaced breakwaters are also considered in detail. Results show broad agreement with theoretical trajectories. Predictions of vortex shedding periods on breakwater heads show excellent agreement with computations. Part 2 examines startup macrovortices on rip current topographies using computations and laboratory experiments, and changes in behaviour as the system transitions from wide to narrow gap width.
