Nonzero positive solutions of fractional Laplacian systems with functional terms
MATHEMATISCHE NACHRICHTEN
Autore/i: Biagi, S; Calamai, A; Infante, G
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: We study the existence of nonzero positive solutions of a class of systems of differential equations driven by fractional powers of the Laplacian. Our approach is based on the notion of fixed point index, and allows us to deal with nonlocal functional weights and functional boundary conditions. We present two examples to shed light on the type of functionals and growth conditions that can be considered with our approach.

An infinite dimensional version of the intermediate value theorem
JOURNAL OF FIXED POINT THEORY AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Autore/i: Benevieri, P; Calamai, A; Furi, M; Pera, Mp
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Let f = I - k be a compact vector field of class C1 on a real Hilbert space H. In the spirit of Bolzano's Theorem on the existence of zeros in a bounded real interval, as well as the extensions due to Cauchy (in R2) and Kronecker (in Rk), we prove an existence result for the zeros of f in the open unit ball B of H. Similarly to the classical finite dimensional results, the existence of zeros is deduced exclusively from the restriction f|S of f to the boundary S of B. As an extension of this, but not as a consequence, we obtain as well an Intermediate Value Theorem whose statement needs the topological degree. Such a result implies the following easily comprehensible, nontrivial, generalization of the classical Intermediate Value Theorem: If a half-line with extreme q ?/ f(S) intersects transversally the function f|S for only one point of S, then any value of the connected component of H\f(S) containing q is assumed by f in B. In particular, such a component is bounded.

Periodic perturbations of reducible scalar second order functional differential equations
ELECTRONIC JOURNAL ON THE QUALITATIVE THEORY OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Using a topological approach we investigate the structure of the set of forced oscillations of a class of reducible second order functional retarded differential equations subject to periodic forcing. More precisely, we consider a delay-type functional dependence involving a gamma probability distribution and, using a linear chain trick, we formulate a first order system of ODEs whose T-periodic solutions correspond to those of the functional equation.

THE BROUWER DEGREE ASSOCIATED TO CLASSICAL EIGENVALUE PROBLEMS AND APPLICATIONS TO NONLINEAR SPECTRAL THEORY
TOPOLOGICAL METHODS IN NONLINEAR ANALYSIS
Autore/i: Benevieri, P; Calamai, A; Furi, M; Pera, Mp
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Thanks to a connection between two completely different topics, the classical eigenvalue problem in a finite dimensional real vector space and the Brouwer degree for maps between oriented differentiable real manifolds, we are able to solve, at least in the finite dimensional context, a conjecture regarding global continuation in nonlinear spectral theory that we formulated in some recent papers. The infinite dimensional case seems nontrivial, and is still unsolved.

Abstract: We extend to the infinite dimensional context the link between two completely different topics recently highlighted by the authors: the classical eigenvalue problem for real square matrices and the Brouwer degree for maps between oriented finite dimensional real manifolds. Thanks to this extension, we solve a conjecture regarding global continuation in nonlinear spectral theory that we have formulated in a recent article. Our result (the ex conjecture) is applied to prove a Rabinowitz type global continuation property of the solutions to a perturbed motion equation containing an air resistance frictional force.

Abstract: We study the persistence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of perturbed eigenvalue problems in Hilbert spaces. We assume that the unperturbed problem has a nontrivial kernel of odd dimension and we prove a Rabinowitz-type global continuation result. The approach is topological, based on a notion of degree for oriented Fredholm maps of index zero between real differentiable Banach manifolds.

Global continuation in euclidean spaces of the perturbed unit eigenvectors corresponding to a simple eigenvalue
TOPOLOGICAL METHODS IN NONLINEAR ANALYSIS

Abstract: In the Euclidean space Rk, we consider the perturbed eigenvalue problem Lx + εN(x) = λx, ||x|| = 1, where ε, λ are real parameters, L is a linear endomorphism of Rk, and N: Sk−1 → Rk is a continuous map defined on the unit sphere of Rk . We prove a global continuation result for the solutions (x, ε, λ) of this problem. Namely, under the assumption that x_* is one of the two unit eigenvectors of L corresponding to a simple eigenvalue λ_*, we show that, in the set of all the solutions, the connected component containing (x_*, 0, λ_*) is either unbounded or meets a solution (x*, 0, λ*) having x* ≠ x_*. Our result is inspired by a paper of R. Chiappinelli concerning the local persistence property of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a perturbed self-adjoint operator in a real Hilbert space.

Existence results for boundary value problems associated with singular strongly nonlinear equations
JOURNAL OF FIXED POINT THEORY AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Autore/i: Biagi, S.; Calamai, A.; Papalini, F.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: We consider a strongly nonlinear differential equation of the following general type: (Φ(a(t,x(t))x′(t)))′=f(t,x(t),x′(t)),a.e. on[0,T],where f is a Carathédory function, Φ is a strictly increasing homeomorphism (the Φ -Laplacian operator), and the function a is continuous and non-negative. We assume that a(t, x) is bounded from below by a non-negative function h(t), independent of x and such that 1 / h∈ Lp(0 , T) for some p> 1 , and we require a weak growth condition of Wintner–Nagumo type. Under these assumptions, we prove existence results for the Dirichlet problem associated with the above equation, as well as for different boundary conditions. Our approach combines fixed point techniques and the upper/lower solution method.

Global persistence of the unit eigenvectors of perturbed eigenvalue problems in Hilbert spaces

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: We consider the nonlinear eigenvalue problem where are real parameters, L,C : G H are bounded linear operators between separable real Hilbert spaces, and N : S H is a continuous map defined on the unit sphere of G. We prove a global persistence result regarding the set of the solutions (x,) SR R of this problem. Namely, if the operators N and C are compact, under suitable assumptions on a solution p= (x, 0, ) of the unperturbed problem, we prove that the connected component of containing pis either unbounded or meets a triple p= (x, 0,) with p6= p. When C is the identity and G = H is finite dimensional, the assumptions on (x, 0,) mean that xis an eigenvector of L whose corresponding eigenvalue,is simple. Therefore, we extend a previous result obtained by the authors in the finite dimensional setting. Our work is inspired by a paper of R. Chiappinelli concerning the local persistence property of the unit eigenvectors of perturbed self-adjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.

Abstract: This paper describes various technological tools and e-learning resources used by the authors in their work as university teachers and communicators of mathematics to a general public. As pointed out by recent developments in mathematics education research, a technology enhanced teaching may have significant potentialities at tertiary level: e-learning is an essential support to overcome some logistic obstacles such as the large number of students per teacher, the small number of hours of lesson available, the heterogeneity of the freshmen’s mathematical background. Moreover, a fine design of digital environments can foster an engaging, inclusive, flexible and meaningful learning of mathematical topics. In this paper we give a perspective on some educational experiments carried out with engineering students of Università Politecnica delle Marche through specific functionalities of the Moodle platform (quiz, forum, workshop) and the dynamic geometry software Geogebra. We also report shortly on our approach to the use of new technological devices in the dissemination of scientific knowledge to a broader audience.

Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to locate trajectories of a perturbed system, which is known to behave chaotically. The unperturbed system is assumed to have the origin as a hyperbolic fixed point, and to admit a trajectory homoclinic to the origin. This homocline is assumed to lie in a prescribed region having the origin in its border. Using a Mel'nikov type approach, we introduce natural conditions ensuring that all the chaotic trajectories of the perturbed system, given by classical results, lie in the same region. The applicability of our results is illustrated in two examples. In the first one, we find positive radial solutions for a class of P.D.E.'s, obtaining new results in the case of critical equations ruled by Laplacian with Hardy potentials. In the other one, we show that under certain conditions one of two weakly coupled pendula moves in one direction only.

Abstract: In this paper we present a theory for the existence of multiple nontrivial solutions for a class of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations. Our methodology, rather than to work directly in cones, is to utilize the theory of fixed point index on affine cones. This approach is fairly general and covers a class of nonlocal boundary value problems for functional differential equations. Some examples are given in order to illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract: We investigate T-periodic parametrized retarded functional motion equations on (possibly) noncompact manifolds; that is, constrained second order retarded functional differential equations. For such equations we prove a global continuation result for T-periodic solutions. The approach is topological and is based on the degree theory for tangent vector fields as well as on the fixed point index theory. Our main theorem is a generalization to the case of retarded equations of an analogous result obtained by the last two authors for second order differential equations on manifolds. As corollaries we derive a Rabinowitz-type global bifurcation result and a Mawhin-type continua-tion principle. Finally, we deduce the existence of forced oscillations for the retarded spherical pendulum under general assumptions.

Abstract: We consider a class of semilinear elliptic equations of the form $$ -\Delta u(x,y)+W'(u(x,y))=0,\quad (x,y)\in\R^{2} $$ where $W:\R\to\R$ is modeled on the classical two well Ginzburg-Landau potential $W(s)=(s^{2}-1)^{2}$. We show, via variational methods, that for any $j\geq 2$, the equation has a solution $v_{j}\in C^{2}(\R^{2})$ with $|v_{j}(x,y)|\leq 1$ for any $(x,y)\in\R^{2}$ satisfying the following symmetric and asymptotic conditions: setting $\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\theta)=v_{j}(\rho\cos( \theta),\rho\sin(\theta))$, there results $\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\frac{\pi}{2}+\theta)=-\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\frac{\pi}{2}-\theta)$, $\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\theta+\frac{\pi}{j})=-\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\theta)$, $\forall (\rho,\theta)\in \R^{+}\times\R$ and $\tilde v_{j}(\rho,\theta)\to 1$ as $\rho\to+\infty$ for any $\theta\in [\frac{\pi}2-\frac{\pi}{2j},\frac{\pi}2)$.}
