Abstract: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) indirect coupling on electronic equipment is theoretically and experimentally investigated considering the effects for three typical structures: a coaxial cable, a multilayer PCB, and a metallic enclosure. The analytical approach is based on classical electromagnetic theory and is developed in a simple way that is easy to apply and accurate enough to give the designer a reliable estimation of the interference produced by an ESD event

Abstract: The problem of crosstalk evaluation among PCB traces in a multilayer structure is studied by means of an S-matrix technique. Two bundles of parallel lines, perpendicularly crossing on different layers, are analysed, and this complex structure is decomposed into subsystems, each of them characterised by its S matrix. The elementary subsystems consist of bundles of parallel lines and crosses of two lines. A particular algorithm, developed to number the ports of each subsystem, allows one to easily recognise the interconnected ports and the external ports (I/O ports), to achieve the S matrix of the overall structure in terms of the I/O ports. The application of this technique to a 3×3 and a 7×7 configuration shows a good agreement between theoretical and experimental results. Finally, the analysis in the frequency domain is extended to the time domain by a standard FFT algorithm, and, as an example, an ESD current flowing along a line is examined, as well as its coupling toward an adjacent and crossing line.

Abstract: The coupling through apertures between an electrostatic discharge (ESD) current flowing on the external shield of a metallic enclosure and the electromagnetic field of its internal region is analyzed; the excitation of the electric field on the apertures by the ESD and then the evaluation of the internal field are calculated separately, by means of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique and the modal expansion, respectively. All the numerical results obtained with this simple and numerically efficient approach have been validated by measurements

Abstract: A theoretical analysis has been developed to study the crosstalk in crossed bundles of parallel lines. The model is based on the theory of the coupled transmission lines and the resulting system of differential equations has been solved by means of the finite difference, time-domain (FDTD) method. The frequency response of the network has been achieved by the discrete fourier transform (DFT) algorithm; measurements, performed with a vectorial network analyser, show a good agreement with numerical simulation.

Abstract: The problem of the radiated emission from printed circuit boards, (PCBs) is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Differential mode and common mode currents are separately studied by means of a rigorous method based on proper Green's functions. The solution of the integral equations for the current distribution, derived from the problem formulation, is numerically achieved by the method of moments. Simulated results are in good agreement with measurements. The final products of this study are masks that establish the maximum allowable currents or voltage values as a function of frequency to comply with CISPR regulation

Abstract: The analysis of a thermic end-fire interstitial applicator for microwave hyperthermai, i.e. an applicator that performs a tip-localized heating of the surrounding lossy medium, is presented. The antenna consists of a shorted coaxial cable with an annular radiating aperture at the end. the analytical approach is based on the equivalence principle, which leads to an integral equation for the equivalent magnetic current distribution on the aperture; solution is achieved by the method of moments. All theoretical results are compared to experimental ones, showing a good agreement in a wide frequency range

Abstract: In spite of a large clinical and experimental application the techniques of transcranial magnetic stimulation still present obscure aspects. This concerns especially the safety parameters and the exact characterization of the current induced by a single magnetic pulse. The model proposed consists in an equivalent electric network derived by Maxwell's equations and applied to discretized magnetic resonance imaging of a normal subject head. This model allows an accurate 3D prediction of current distribution.

Abstract: The problem of the radiated emission from apertures in metallic enclosures has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. In particular, the tangential electric field in the aperture has been evaluated by two methods: the first is helpful during the design stage and the second during the prototype development stage of electronic equipment shielded by a metallic box. The first method is a rigorous approach and uses the equivalence principle that leads to an integral equation then solved by the method of moments. The second is an approximate technique. This technique is based on simple, cheap, and quick measurements of the normal components of the magnetic field across the aperture. Numerical simulation in good agreement with experimental results is shown.

TLM Techniques in Microwave Ovens Analysis: Numerical and Experimental Results

Abstract: The knowledge of the electric and thermic behaviour of a microwave oven is essential both for the designer and for the user. The former needs to know resonant frequencies and input impedance of the cavity in both situations, empty oven and filled with food, to realize a good matching between source (magnetron) and load. The latter needs to know temperature distribution inside the food to keep under control proteic degradation and/or to assure a complete food pasteurization and sterilization. The TLM method proves to be the most efficient; in the present contribution the method has been used to evaluate resonant frequencies of a commercial microwave oven, empty and filled with a phantom simulating the dielectric characteristics of a biological tissue; moreover the electric field distribution inside the phantom has been obtained. Theoretical results have been compared with experimental measurements performed by a vector network analyzer and infrared thermography obtaining a good agreement.

Evaluation of scattering in a TEM cell by the FD-TD method

Abstract: The TEM cell is a fundamental tool in electromagnetic compatibility in that it permits one to simulate the effects of a plane wave incident on equipment under test in a region large with respect to the wavelength where the field is strictly TEM. The main restriction to the high-frequency operation of the cell arises from the cutoff of the first higher order mode. The new GTEM cell permits one to overcome this restriction. In fact, the absence of edges on the external surface, its tapering, and the use of absorbing material on the end wall ensure operation up to frequencies of several GHz. The scattering of metallic object in a GTEM cell is analyzed and the results are compared with scattering with plane wave exitation. FD-TD proves to be effective for any shape of scattering body with both sinusoidal and pulse exitation even if it is computer time consuming. A 2D analysis that reduces the computing time is reported.

Microstrip patch applicators

Abstract: Four hyperthermia applicators are described: a disk and a slot applicator which are resonant structures, and a quasi-TEM microstrip line and a spiral applicator which are wideband antennas. The thermal behavior of the antennas is analyzed by means of a computer program which solves the bio-heat-transfer equation (BHTE) for any geometry of the biological body in the two-dimensional approximation. The BHTE was solved by means of the hopscotch method, a particular version of the finite-difference method, taking into account the metabolism, the blood flow, and the specific absorption rate. The results of the theoretical analysis are compared with experimental data detected by the HP 8510A network analyzer as regards electrical measurements and by an infrared camera as regards temperature patterns on phantoms.

Abstract: Dielectric ridge waveguide is now widely used in passive and active integrated optics, and it could find use in millimeter-wave circuits. Families of devices such as ring lasers and couplers require structures with bends of finite length and relatively high curvature. The paper presents a technique. based on the concept of local modes, which also takes into account the corrugations due to fabrication. Results are in good qualitative agreement with experimental values reported in the literature

Abstract: The electromagnetic characteristics of microstrip disk antenna radiating into biological-like media are evaluated by use of the method of moments. In particular the distribution of electric field inside the biological-like body, the input admittance of the antenna and its working frequency as a function of the body dielectric characteristics are presented.
