A Numerically Efficient Method for Predicting the Scattering Characteristics of Complex Moving Targets
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper presents a new computational approach that allows rapid analysis of the Electro-Magnetic Scattering characteristics (EMS) of static or moving complex radar targets. The scattering features of the object are represented through a generalized scattering matrix H, whose elements can be measured or computed using conventional numerical techniques, e.g., CST software in the proposed case, and considering prescribed sampled directions. A cardinal series then is adopted to reconstruct the complete scattering pattern by suitably extending the approach to calculate the target’s scattering matrix for any incidence wave and any observation point. The number of finite samples, that is, the dimension of the scattering matrix depends only on the maximum dimension of the target. A PEC sphere and a PEC three-dimensional (3D) complex object have been analyzed in detail. Precise, fast, and stable sampling algorithms have been applied to these targets in the static case and in motion. In particular, the field scattered by the moving objects is then used to carry out the Micro-Doppler analysis of the object radar signature.

Experimental Validation of an Emission Test Method for Source Stirred Reverberation Chamber
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY
Autore/i: De Leo, A.; Cerri, G.; Russo, P.; Mariani Primiani, V.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This article reports on the experimental validation of a method to predict radiated emissions of equipment under test in a reverberation chamber where the multiple monopole sources stirring technique is implemented. The method is validated for three different case studies: a loop, a slot in a metal enclosure, and a realistic device comprised of the chassis of a power supply for a workstation. The reconstruction of the free space electromagnetic emissions starting from measurements in a reverberation chamber is compared with measurements in an anechoic environment. A statistical analysis of the uncertainty due to a positioning error of the field sample measurement points is also proposed.

Abstract: In this article, we present a fast and accurate numerical method for the computation of scattered electromagnetic field from targets of different sizes and complex shapes. The approach is based on the sampling representation of the complex reflection coefficient of the target where both amplitude and phase information are considered, rather than the usual radar cross section (RCS) where the phase information is missed. The scattering features of the target are organized in a 5-D complex matrix H calculated numerically. The electromagnetic tool (CST) computes this H matrix evaluating the scattered field in a finite number of selected directions. This number is chosen in order to obtain a good reconstruction of overall scattering feature. As assumed for the scattered field, matrix H is also calculated for the same discrete set of directions of the incident wave. Two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the correctness and the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract: In this paper a statistical analysis on the measurement uncertainties related to the radiated emissions of an Equipment Under Test (EUT) is reported. The measurement environment is a Reverberation Chamber (RC), where the EUT is placed inside its working volume and the electric field is sampled close to the RC's metallic walls. From these measurements the free space emission of the EUT is reconstructed. The RC is equipped for the Multiple Monopole Source Stirring (MMSS) technique, which requires an array of monopole antennas placed onto the walls; therefore, in the present paper, the same antennas are used to sample the orthogonal component of the electric field radiated by the EUT. Two uncertainties mechanisms are analyzed: the position of the monopoles onto the walls and the direction of the monopole, that in the ideal scenario are perfectly orthogonal to the walls, but in a more realistic scenario, they could be oriented slightly in a different way.

Abstract: We analyze the measured reflection coefficient of antennas in unconventional multiple monopole source stirring reverberation chambers. The reverberation chamber that we used is equipped by stochastic diffractors that are used to break the geometrical symmetries of the baseline metallic cavity. The experimental measurements of the average reflection parameter show reduced frequency fluctuations over a broad frequency range. Furthermore, the average reflection coefficient measured in the reverberant environment is in good agreement with the measurement of the same antenna in free space conditions.

Optimization of the measurement technique for emissions in reverberation chamber using the equivalence principle

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper presents an optimization of a method to reconstruct the radiated emissions of an equipment under test by the measurement of the electric field samples collected on the walls of a reverberation chamber. This means that only the orthogonal component of the electric field is nec-essary to obtain the radiative behavior of the device in free space conditions. The use of the equivalence principle allows one to reduce the number of equivalent sources used to reconstruct the radi-ation of the device. In fact, in the previous version of the method, the sources are placed into the entirety of working volume of the reverberation chamber. In the current version of the method, only the surface surrounding the equipment under test is discretized. The analytical implementation of the method is proposed for a particular stirring action: the multiple monopole source stirring tech-nique. This technique is based on an array of monopoles placed onto the walls of the cavity, and therefore no further hardware is needed for the reconstruction of the radiated emissions. The method is experimentally validated in a real scenario.

Abstract: This paper presents the design of a broadband antenna to be used in a multiple antenna source stirring scenario. Usually, an array of monopole is placed onto the chamber's walls and the antennas are sequentially fed to perform the stirring action. But monopoles are intrinsically narrowband antennas: for this reason the use of a broadband antenna was investigated. The adopted structure is a helix antenna able to minimize the chamber volume reduction and to maximize the averaged power delivered to the chamber. Its performance was investigated by analyzing some typical RC performance indicators.

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper presents a general and quasi-analytical method aimed at reconstructing the electric field radiated by equipment under test (EUT), in free space through the knowledge of the values of the electric field sampled on the walls of a rectangular metallic enclosure. The algorithm is based on a set of equivalent magnetic and electric currents, regularly placed in a sub volume of the chamber, whose values are determined to reconstruct the electric field due to the EUT on the samples. Results show that the method is general because it can be applied to a wide set of EUTs, but it is also flexible because it is able to exploit some a priori knowledge of the source to improve its accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract: In this paper a novel antenna for an electromagnetic assistance system for autonomous walking of blind or visually impaired people is presented. Its main aim is to detect obstacles that the white cane is not able to intercept, in particular those that can hurt the head or thorax zone. The proposed antenna has a fan beam radiation pattern, works at 24 GHz, in a frequency band reserved for ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) applications. The antenna is designed using a numerical electromagnetic tool and its capability to detect a wide set of obstacles was investigated through numerical simulations and experimental measurements. Results confirm the good performances of the antenna and its capability to extend by a few meters the region usually explored by the white cane.

Abstract: In spite of all the developments in dental implantology techniques, peri-implant diseases are frequent (prevalence up to 80% and 56% of subjects for mucositis and peri-implantitis, respectively) and there is an urgency for an effective treatment strategy. This paper presents an innovative electromedical device for the electromagnetic treatment of mucositis and peri-implantitis diseases. This device is also equipped with a measurement part for bioimpedance, which reflects the health conditions of a tissue, thus allowing clinicians to objectively detect impaired areas and to monitor the severity of the disease, evaluate the treatment efficacy, and adjust it accordingly. The design of the device was realized considering literature data, clinical evidence, numerical simulation results, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) pre-compliance tests, involving both clinicians and engineers, to better understand all the needs and translate them into design requirements. The reported system is being tested in more than 50 dental offices since 2019, providing efficient treatments for mucositis and peri-implantitis, with success rates of approximately 98% and 80%, respectively.

Abstract: This paper studies the monostatic radar cross section (RCS) simulation of a popular Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus in UHF band. The RCS (sigma) is evaluated when the plane wave is horizontally and vertically polarized. First, for a constant theta angle and a varying phi angle the results show that sigma is higher than the other polarizations, its highest value is found when _ phi= 0 or phi = 90_, meaning when the excitation is in front of the center of the blades. Second, for constant phi_and a varying theta, in this case also, sigma is higher than the other polarizations, its values are quite constant around -17dBsm with 2dBsm more when looking from the bottom or from the top (-15dBsm). These results give us an idea about the optimal position of the radar to get the highest value of the RCS of the drone.

Abstract: This paper reports the application of a theoretical model designed to predict the electromagnetic field radiated by a piece of equipment under test through an array of apertures on its metallic chassis. The simulated scenario is a reverberation chamber where the electric field is measured close to its walls. At this scope the multipole monopole source stirring technique is considered because of the presence of the antennas onto the chamber's walls. The results are successfully compared to the emissions in free space, and a wideband frequency analysis is performed. Finally, the effect of a random numeric noise on the module and on the phase of the electric field samples is analyzed.

Abstract: A simulation tool to characterize the radar cross section of a pedestrian in near field is presented in the paper. The tool has been developed in order to predict and optimize the performance of the short-range radar systems employed in autonomous vehicle operations. It is based on an analytical model which joins the modeling of the human body with the theory of the physical optics. Our studies first focused on the implementation of the electromagnetic code where the human body, the radiation properties of the antenna and the scenario to be analyzed have been analytically expressed. Then, the proposed model has been validated in terms of accuracy comparing simulated and experimental data regarding the radar cross section of a metal sphere and of an adult, in the frequency range 23-28 GHz. In the end, an evaluation of the performance in terms of required computer memory and execution time has been carried out, comparing the proposed simulation tool with other numerical computational methods.

Abstract: This paper reports a novel technique to estimate the total averaged power emitted by a device under test placed inside the working volume of a reverberation chamber in a radiated emission test. The electromagnetic field inside the chamber is stirred by the application of the multiple monopole source stirring in receiving mode, that is a particular way to implement the source stirring technique; in this scenario an array of monopole antenna is placed onto the chamber walls and sequentially connected to the measurement system to get the stirring action. The procedure for the radiated emission estimation requires that chamber has to be calibrated by a set of measurements. In the paper the calibration results are compared to the prediction of the analytical model, developed to predict the chamber's performances.

The Human Body Modelled by Canonical Geometric Shapes for the Analysis of Scattered E-fields
APPLIED COMPUTATIONAL ELECTROMAGNETICS SOCIETY JOURNAL

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to propose a simplified model of a human body to be used in electromagnetic problems involving high frequency field scattering. Canonical geometric shapes, analytically described, represent the body. The accuracy of the model was tested comparing the field scattered by the simplified body representation with the one scattered by a more realistic phantom. At first, the influence of anatomical details of the body was analysed, comparing the electromagnetic field reflected by a realistic human head with the backscattering of spheres and of an ellipsoid. A second test concerns the human body, modelled by sphere, parallelepiped and cylinders. In this case, the possibility of reconstructing a wideband pulse scattered by the whole body with the superposition of pulses scattered by its separated parts was demonstrated. Both analyses were carried out in the frequency range 3- 5 GHz using a full wave numerical simulator.

Abstract: This work aims at determining if bioimpedance measurements are able to provide information about the inflammatory state of the tissues; if the presence of an inflamed tissue can be located by means of bioimpedance measure, it would be possible to focus a potential treatment in this site. Different numerical 3D models have been realized to simulate the measurement conditions present in the event of inflamed gingiva around a dental implant. A premolar has been represented and different inflammation volumes have been considered; both geometric and electrical properties have been taken from the literature. In addition, some preliminary measurements have been conducted in three patients with dental implants in different conditions: healthy tissues, inflammation and peri-implantitis. The percentage difference of impedance (∆Z) between healthy and inflamed tissues has been considered. In addition, also three numerical models of healthy teeth have been realized (i.e. incisor, canine and premolar roots), in order to evaluate the normal range of teeth bioimpedance values. The results obtained from the numerical simulations show ∆Z values of 6–20% for the dental implant, depending on the inflamed volume. The bioimpedance values experimentally measured are in agreement with the ones obtained from the simulations and ∆Z values are also more marked (34% for inflammation, 55% for peri-implantitis), suggesting that in real inflamed tissues not only electrical properties but also dimensions are different with respect to the normal case. As regards the healthy teeth, the modulus of the measured impedance is higher than that of the implant; this was predictable and is due to the presence of bone instead of the implant. In conclusion, it is possible to state that bioimpedance measurements allow the clinician to detect inflamed tissues, so that the therapy can be focused on the impaired zone, limiting the influence in the surrounding healthy tissues and personalizing the therapy according to the inflammation severity.

Abstract: The estimation of activity-related energy expenditure during a day is an important parameter to be calculated and monitored, especially in Ambient Assisted Living application for elders. In fact, scientific evidences exist that a sedentary life has serious physiological and heart implications. Many are the compact and wearable measuring devices currently available, such as pedometers and accelerometers. Anyway, in the view of Ambient Assisted Living application, contactless and no-collaborative systems are to be preferred. For this reason, in this paper an alternative approach for activity-related energy expenditure calculation based on an electromagnetic contactless motion sensor is proposed. The velocity and kinetic energy associated to a moving target are calculated from the elaboration of spectrogram intensity. The method has been firstly validated with a well-known movement, i.e. the swinging of a physical pendulum, and then tested with a human subject moving his arm, with very promising results. © Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites synergistically combine the good thermal properties of the hosting polymer matrix with the high mechanical performance of the fillers, providing a new class of materials with superior properties. The present study aims to evaluate in a multidisciplinary way the enhancement in mechanical and thermalhygrometric properties of low and medium density nanophased polyurethane (PUR) foams with either randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers as compared to the neat ones. To this aim, 1% weight of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were homogeneously dispersed into polyol of PUR foam by an ultrasonic cavitation method. In parallel, a small amount of CNFs was functionalized in advance by a coprecipitation method so as to align them into the polymer matrix through an external low intensity magnetic field. SEM analyses were used to compare the microstructure of the neat and nanophased samples. Results have shown that the addition of carbon nanofibers in the foams products a closer structure with a more uniform size and shape. Moreover, functionalized CNFs play a significant role in regulating cells shape as well as strengthening cells walls. Mechanical test results also demonstrated that CNFs increase both strength and stiffness of the samples. The alignment of carbon nanofibers within medium density nanophased foams determines the highest mechanical properties. However, the more noticeable improvement in samples performance occurred in low density nanophased foams. Finally, carbon nanoparticles decrease the thermal conductivity and increase the resistance against water adsorption.

Abstract: The feasibility of an electromagnetic sensor to assist the autonomous walking of visually impaired and blind users is demonstrated in this paper. It is known that people affected by visual diseases usually walk assisted by some supports, among which the white cane is the most common. Our idea consists in applying a microwave radar on the traditional white cane making aware the user about the presence of an obstacle in a wider and safer range. Compared to the already existing Electronic Travel Aids devices, the proposed system exhibits better performance, noise tolerance and reduced dimensions. In the following, the latest developments of this research activity are presented, with special concern for the miniaturization of circuit board and antennas. A laboratory prototype has been designed and realized and the first test results of obstacle detection are hereby shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system

Abstract: In this paper the result of a wide set of measurements based on scattering parameters, performed on a novel type of reverberation chamber are presented. Two stirring actions are considered: the first one is the traditional mechanical stirring, obtained by rotating a Z-folded metallic paddle; the second technique is realized by inserting two of monopoles into the chamber's wall and subsequently varying their position, so changing the electromagnetic field configuration inside the cavity. A statistical analysis of the scattering parameters is reported, so the chamber is characterized by a wide set of parameters.

Abstract: A low-frequency experimental characterization of a multiple monopole-source-stirred reverberation chamber is presented and the results are compared to the prediction of an analytical model. At first quality factor was determined, then the statistic of the received power and Rician K-factor as well as the electric field uniformity and anisotropy. All the experimental results are in good agreement with the prediction of the analytical model, demonstrating its accuracy in designing a source-stirring chamber.

Abstract: Respiratory rate is a vital parameter of primary importance in medicine, sport/fitness and wellness in general, especially for most vulnerable categories of people like children and elderly people. Contactless determination of breathing activity provides a powerful and essential mean for evaluating this parameter in subjects who cannot accommodate physical sensors on their bodies. In hospital such subjects may be intensive care patients, prematurely born children and hosts of burn units. Moreover, also for long-term measurements of healthy people, for example, an elder living in home alone or in a care centre, invasive systems prove to be uncomfortable and annoying. Even for a night-time diagnosis of respiratory sleep disorders, like apnoea and hypopnoea, they demonstrate to interfere with the sleep regularity. Therefore, in the last decades many electronic devices have been conceived and realized to detect such an important parameter along with different branches of physics: strain gauges, ultrasounds, optics, thermometry, etc. This chapter presents the theoretical studies, the design and realization of a standalone Electromagnetic (EM) system for contactless determination of breathing frequency and subject's activity. Two major EM solutions are already known in the literature, continuous wave (CW) systems, and ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The first evaluates the Doppler effect caused by the chest displacement during breathing at a single frequency, and the other one is a radar that detects the body motion by measuring the time shifts of sequential pulses. An intermediate solution thatjoins the advantages ofboth and overcomes their drawbacks is proposed. Through the use of a frequency sweep, in fact, it is possible to retrieve the equivalent information that UWB pulses are able to give, yet keeping the same contained hardware complexity of a CW system. At the same time, the proposed system proves to be robust and insensible to environmental changes. The theoretical studies have aimed at the demonstration that the solution under study helps in avoiding the blind frequencies that affect CW systems, because of sensitivity issues that depend on the variability of the reflection coefficient from the frequency and, as proved, from the harmonic content of the monitored motion. Supported by such theoretical studies, the preliminary tests are performed using laboratory instrumentation (a VNA and a commercial double ridge antenna) for a thorough campaign of measurements on assorted frequency bands, both in a controlled environment (anechoic angle) and in a concrete house, that inherently clutter the received signal. The second step involves the design and realization of a custom antenna, to be used in place of the double ridge and operating in a narrower band, which has demonstrated the same reliability of the commercial one. It has been verified in different conditions that the proposed system is able to detect both the position of the subject (i.e. distance from the antenna) and his breathing frequency, without any need for collaboration from the subject under measure. The final activity is the realization of a prototype of the device that implements the algorithms that have been studied. It is worth to highlight that the proposed system can be profitably adopted for Ambient Assisted Living framework, since it is not invasive and does not infringe the privacy of the end user, and yet it provides many valuable information about the subject's health status.

Abstract: Sport is one of the best ways to promote the social integration of people affected by physical disability, because it helps them to increase their self-esteem by facing difficulties and overcoming their disabilities. Nowadays, a large number of sports can be easily played by visually impaired and blind athletes without any special supports, but, there are some disciplines that require the presence of a sighted guide. In this work, the attention will be focused on marathons, during which athletes with visual disorders have to be linked to the sighted guide by means of a non-stretchable elbow tether, with an evident reduction of their performance and autonomy. In this context, this paper presents a fixed electromagnetic infrastructure to equip a standard running racetrack in order to help a blind athlete to safely run without the presence of a sighted guide. The athlete runs inside an invisible hallway, just wearing a light and a comfortable sensor unit. The patented system has been homemade, designed, realized and finally tested by a blind Paralympic marathon champion with encouraging results and interesting suggestions for technical improvements. In this paper (Part I), the transmitting unit, whose main task is to generate the two magnetic fields that delimit the safe hallway, is presented and discussed.

Abstract: In dentistry possible inflammatory episodes of oral cavity can be very frequent (periodontitis, mucositis, peri-implantitis) and they can have serious consequences. Indeed, peri-implantitis is still the principal cause of implant failure. Impedance values of biological tissues are related to the physiological/pathological state of the tissue itself. In fact, an inflamed site exhibits an impedance value lower than that of the corresponding healthy tissue. Based on these observations, the aim of this work is to determine if impedancemetric measurements are able to provide information about the inflammatory state of tissues. A numerical 3D model has been realized to simulate the measurement conditions present in the event of inflammation around a dental implant. The aim is to understand if it is possible to determine the presence of an inflamed tissue and to locate its site, so that the treatment could be specifically focused in that specific area. A simplified geometry reproducing the implant has been realized in order to validate the numerical model by means of experimental measurements. The obtained results are satisfactorily accurate, so the model can be considered reliable. Therefore, multiple simulations have been run on the original model to carry out a parametric study in terms of different conductivity values, different volumes of inflamed tissues and different measurement frequencies. The advantages and limits of such a method have been shown to properly define the main constraints for the system design.

PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT

Abstract: Bioimpedance measurements represent an advantageous method to evaluate the physio-pathological conditions of biological tissues and their use is spreading in different application fields, from the evaluation of body composition to the vital signs monitoring, passing through the individuation of cancer tissues and the detection of different substances (e.g. glucose measurements in people affected by diabetes). In fact, tissues electric properties vary with their conditions; for example, electrical conductivity increases when there is an inflammatory process, because of the presence of oedema, hyperaemia and infiltration. Inflammatory phenomena are frequent in dentistry, in diseases like periodontitis and peri-implantitis; however, at present the diagnosis is mainly done with the naked eye, by observing the gingiva redness and swelling. The aim of this work is to prove the feasibility of the inflammation detection by means of bioimpedance measurements. Both numerical simulations and preliminary experimental measurements provide significant outcomes in differentiating between healthy and inflamed tissues. Percentage differences in the impedance modulus equal to 4-20% (numerical simulations) and 35-56% (experimental measurements), respectively, depending on the considered conditions (e.g. electrodes characteristics and inflammation severity), were found. Such measure could be integrated in electromedical devices designed, for example, for the therapy of peri-implantitis, in order to personalise the therapeutic dose in terms of intensity and duration and focusing it on the impaired area, minimising the effects on the surrounding tissues.

Abstract: Currently, the availability of technology developed to increase the autonomy of visually impaired athletes during sports is limited. The research proposed in this paper (Part I and Part II) focuses on the realization of an electromagnetic system that can guide a blind runner along a race track without the need for a sighted guide. In general, the system is composed of a transmitting unit (widely described in Part I) and a receiving unit, whose components and main features are described in this paper. Special attention is paid to the definition of an electromagnetic model able to faithfully represent the physical mechanisms of interaction between the two units, as well as between the receiving magnetic sensor and the body of the user wearing the device. This theoretical approach allows for an estimation of the signals to be detected, and guides the design of a suitable signal processing board. This technology has been realized, patented, and tested with a blind volunteer with successful results and this paper presents interesting suggestions for further improvements.

Abstract: Theoretical analysis of a reverberation chamber excited through the source-stirring technique at low frequency is presented. A complete analytical solution returns quickly the electromagnetic field inside the chamber thanks to an efficient computation technique for the slowly convergent triple series. The stirring function is accomplished by 62 monopole antennas, irregularly distributed on the chamber walls, and subsequently, fed two at a time for a total of 1891 combinations. At first, the empty chamber is characterized, as usually it is done for any test site and then a receiving loop is considered in the chamber working volume to simulate a device under test (DUT) and the induced voltage is studied in terms of amplitude and phase. The analytical approach allows to account for all mutual couplings between transmitting antennas and the receiving structure through the computation of all self and mutual impedances. We demonstrate that the contribution of chamber irrotational modes cannot be neglected in the computation of both antenna input impedance and DUT-induced voltage. The present study highlights the capability of source stirring to change the field amplitude and orientation in the undermoded condition. This advantage takes also benefit from the use of an out-of-phase feeding for each pair of active antennas, achieving a higher DUT-induced voltage.

Abstract: Introduction. Biologic tissues are characterized by specific electrical properties (i.e. electrical conductivity and magnetic permittivity) 1–3. Tissues inflammation causes an increase of electric conductivity with respect to normal values, due to the presence of liquids (hyperemia and infiltration of the adjacent tissues are typical of the inflammatory process) 4. Objectives. This work explores the possibility of detecting inflamed tissue areas by means of bioimpedance measurements in the case of oral inflammations, particularly when a dental implant is present. In this way, the therapy could be “personalized” according to the position and the severity of the inflammation detected and also focused on the impaired area, minimizing the involvement of the surrounding tissues. Methods. In vivo measurements have been made on a patient with dental implants to compare impedance values measured in case of peri-implantitis and healthy data. Results. This preliminary study demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method. Three measures have been repeated on the inflamed implant, with a resulting modulus of (565±43)Ω (results are expressed as mean±standard deviation), while the absolute impedance measured on the healthy implant is equal to (377±20)Ω. Conclusions. A bioimpedance measuring system integrated in a therapeutic device could allow the clinician to locate the impaired area and to evaluate the severity of the inflammation. So, the therapy could be adjusted according to the need of the specific clinical case; in fact, therapeutic dose could be selected according to the measured impedance value. Moreover, bioimpedancemetry would permit the monitoring of the inflammation course.

Abstract: Introduction. In dentistry, oral inflammations are very frequent 1 and can have serious consequences (e.g. peri-implantitis is the main cause of implant failure 2). Human tissues impedance values vary with their physiological/pathological state 3, so it could be used with diagnostic aims. Objectives. The authors numerically analyze the bioimpedance measurement by means of 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) of three teeth models, to verify the possibility of distinguishing between healthy and inflamed tissues. Methods. Various numerical models were considered, both of healthy tooth roots (i.e. canine, incisor and premolar) and of dental implants (i.e. premolar dental implant). Geometric and electrical properties were taken from the literature 4,5, paying particular attention to the inflamed tissue 3. In order to carry out a parametric study, different-sized inflamed tissue volumes were considered, besides different electrodes shapes and dimensions as well as positioning. Results. Healthy and inflamed tissues impedances were compared and differences of 6÷20% have been found, depending on the considered parameters (e.g. inflammation volume and severity). Conclusions. Results show that the change due to the inflammatory process is sufficiently pronounced to discriminate between healthy and inflamed tissues, so bioimpedance measurements can be used to locate inflammation; moreover, results from parametric study can aid in the design of a proper bioimpedance meter. In conclusion, bioimpedancemetry appears to be useful in the diagnostics of inflamed tissues in dentistry.

Abstract: Multiple antenna source stirring is an alternative technique to realize a reverberation chamber: in the proposed case, 62 monopoles are distributed on the chamber walls and fed two at time, so achieving 1891 combinations. The electromagnetic field distribution and the self and mutual impedances are analytically determinable, and statistics can be predicted through the computation of Cumulative Distribution Functions and Polar Plots. The model can be also extended to simulate an immunity test by inserting a DUT inside the working volume of the chamber. Both a monopole and a loop are analytically modeled to simulate common and differential mode noise. It must be highlighted that all mutual coupling among the transmitting antennas and the DUT are accounted for, in terms of mutual impedances. In the lower frequency range, undermoded condition, the technique takes benefit from the adoption of an out-of-phase feeding of each active couple of antennas that enhances field strength

Abstract: It is well known that the most common and largely used assistive technology among the visually impaired community is the white cane. Despite it is a passive technology with a very limited range of work, its easiness of use and low cost make still prevalent its use. Many technologies have been proposed as alternative assistive devices (in literature and on the market) to improve the autonomous mobility of people affected by eye diseases. Nevertheless, whatever is the physical quantity used by these active assistive technologies - mainly ultrasonic or optical sensors - they present many limitations and none of them adequately meets the international guidelines defined for the electronic travel aids and the specific requests coming from the visually impaired community. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the existing travel aids for people affected by visual disorders, discussing pros and cons of available technologies, and to describe the design and the characterization of a novel class of electronic travel aids based on electromagnetic fields, whose advantages, with respect to the traditional ultrasonic and optic devices, will be explained. Starting from a laboratory prototype, the aspects relative to the miniaturization of the device will be discussed, with a particular attention to the realization of a small radiating element to be attached onto the cane. Operative tests with a blind end user will be reported, demonstrating several potentialities of the electromagnetic technology: detecting in advance (few meters from the user) dangerous objects of different shape and material, detecting the presence of obstacles located at chest or head levels, providing the position of the obstacle respect to the user, easiness of use, etc.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose optimization techniques for source stirred reverberation chambers. In particular, the stirring function is accomplished by 62 monopole antennas distributed on the chamber walls, and subsequently fed two at a time for a total of 1891 combinations. At first it is shown how an irregular placement of the antenna increases the chamber performances. Subsequently, an optimization algorithm based on the cumulative distribution function (CDF) is presented and the obtained results are evaluated in terms of statistical uniformity. Finally, the analytical formulation for the correlation matrix of the electromagnetic fields distribution due to all the couples of monopoles is introduced. Combining these two techniques, it is possible to reduce the number of the fed antenna pairs and improving the chamber performances.

Abstract: Peri-implantitis is a severe inflammatory pathology that affects soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants. Nowadays, only prevention is effective to contrast peri-implantitis, but, in recent years, there is the clinical evidence of the efficiency of a therapy based on the application of radio frequency electric current, reporting that 81% of the cases ( 66 implants, 46 patients) were successfully treated. The aim of this paper is to present the therapy mechanism, exploring the distribution of the electric currents in normal and pathologic tissues. A 3D numerical FEM model of tooth root with a dental implant screwed in the alveolar bone has been realized and the therapy has been simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics (R) environment. Results show that the electric current is focused in the inflamed zone around the implant, due to the fact that its conductivity is higher than the healthy tissue one. Moreover, by means of a movable return electrode, the electric current and field lines can be guided in the most inflamed area, limiting the interference on healthy tissues and improving the therapy in the area of interest. In conclusion, it can be stated that this innovative therapy would make a personalized therapy for peri-implantitis possible, also through impedance measurements, allowing the clinician to evaluate the tissue inflammation state.

Abstract: The paper presents the analysis of a reconfigurable antenna based on plasma reflectors. In particular the modellization of plasma elements to be inserted inside a disc antenna has been considered. The knowledge of the plasma state inside plasma elements permits a better simulation of the performance of the antenna with the aid of a commercial software. The result obtained demonstrated that it is not sufficient to consider a lossy dielectric to simulate a plasma reflector, and that a plasma model is necessary to design all the process involved in the radiation of the antenna.

Abstract: The respiratory rate is one of the main vital parameters to be monitored in order to record the physiological and psychological status of a human being. In particular, apnea events represent a serious problem that affect adults and infants and can lead to irreversible brain damages and even to death. Despite these evidences, respiratory rate remains the less monitored parameter because of shortcomings of obstructive measurement techniques. For these reasons during last years we focused our research activity on the development of a smart electromagnetic sensing that allows remote and contactless breathing monitoring and reduces the request of collaboration of the monitored target. In this contribution we want to demonstrate that the electromagnetic approach proposed is also ble to record long-time sleep breathing activity highlighting the presence of apnea events. To this aim a campaign of measurements have been conducted in a real domestic scenario and first interesting results will be shown together with some suggestions for future developments.

Abstract: The human body is a very complex structure, which has not been studied explicitly, until today, for remote monitoring application or wireless communication. This paper presents a preliminary study in the will to demonstrate how the combination of primitive shapes such as spheres, cylinders and parallelepipeds allows creating a simplified 3-D body model sufficient to analyze the interaction mechanisms of electromagnetic waves and resulting more efficient than numerical tools in terms of computational requirements. A comparison between the electric field scattered from a simple geometrical shape and from the realistic face of a phantom will be presented to show the accuracy of the model. To conclude, some experimental results with simulated data will be compared in order to provide a preliminary validation of the method.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the electromagnetic (EM) technology as possible assistive technology for the mobility tasks of visually impaired subjects. The paper will present their characteristics, discussing pros and cons of their use with respect to the existing traditional technologies and electronic travel aids, in terms of performances, miniaturization and wearing comfort. In particular, two applications of EM technologies will be presented more in detail: a first example consists in the design and realization of a laboratory prototype of an EM system able to detect the presence of obstacles along the walking path of visually impaired users and hence to assist them during their mobility tasks, possibly allowing them to walk safely and independently. The second example is the theoretical and experimental study of feasibility of an EM system specifically addressed to visually impaired runners. In conclusion, some hints for discussion will be presented; the user interaction with the sensing system, the signal analysis and possible features extraction will be reviewed addressing issues requiring a multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract: The development of a rescue system for buried persons is a subject of growing importance in case of occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake, landslides, or avalanches. In this paper a fully analytical model has been developed to get some fundamental a priori design characteristics. The proposed system is based on the detection of the victim movements due to its respiratory activity: in particular, when an electromagnetic (EM) wave impinges on a human body, the analysis of the reflected wave parameters such as amplitude, frequency, phase, or delay time allows for the detection of the breathing frequency. The model is simple on purpose because the great uncertainty concerning the characterization of many environmental parameters of a general situation makes a very detailed model useless. However, it is accurate enough to provide useful information about system design, filling the gap in the literature concerning the electromagnetic formulation of such kinds of problems. A system prototype was built using laboratory equipment to experimentally validate the model, and subsequently breathing frequency measurements were carried on, both in a lossless laboratory environment and in a lossy realistic scenario.

Abstract: A multiple antenna source stirring technique is analytically studied and adopted to compute the common mode voltage induced across a cable terminal impedance. Sixty-two monopoles are distributed on the chamber walls. Chamber realizations are enhanced by feeding two antennas at a time so achieving a total of 1891 combinations. A cable loaded by a common mode impedance is inserted as device under test (DUT) inside the chamber. Both high frequency and low frequency cases are considered comparing the maximum values of the induced common mode voltage. In the model, all mutual coupling among the transmitting antennas and the DUT are accounted for. In the lower frequency range, undermoded condition, the technique takes benefit from the adoption of an out-of-phase feeding of each active couple of antennas. The electric field direction can be forced by a proper choice of the two active antennas.

Abstract: This contribution regards the design and realization of an electromagnetic system to support the autonomous mobility of visually impaired and blind people. The system works like a radar that transmits a short pulse and analyzes the echo coming from the surrounding. Operative tests carried out with the collaboration of a blind end user demonstrated several potentialities of the electromagnetic technology: detecting in advance (few meters from the user) dangerous objects of different shape and material, detecting the presence of obstacles located at chest or head levels, providing the position of the obstacles respect to the user, easiness of use, etc. In this context, a special attention has been paid to the miniaturization of the transmitting element, which is a k-band slot antenna to be integrated on a small circuit board to be attached onto a white cane.

Abstract: The use of a UWB system for sensing breathing activity of astronauts must account for many critical issues specific to the space environment. The aim of this paper is twofold. The first concerns the definition of design constraints about the pulse amplitude and waveform to transmit, as well as the immunity requirements of the receiver. The second issue concerns the assessment of the procedures and the characteristics of the algorithms to use for signal processing to retrieve the breathing frequency and respiration waveform. The algorithm has to work correctly in the presence of surrounding electromagnetic noise due to other sources in the environment. The highly reflecting walls increase the difficulty of the problem and the hostile scenario has to be accurately characterized. Examples of signal processing techniques able to recover breathing frequency in significant and realistic situations are shown and discussed.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the capabilities of a novel electromagnetic technique designed for contactless monitoring of breathing activity in Ambient Assisted Living applications. The method is based on the transmission of a frequency sweep and the measurement of the reflection coefficient to determine the respiration rate of a subject. To date, the method is under optimization, but it has already shown interesting capabilities of calculating not only the respiration rate, but also additional features, as the position of the subject inside a room and his/her movements. After a brief mathematical description of the algorithm, some preliminary tests will be described concerning the monitoring of a human target inside a room. These first results clearly show the capability of the method to detect the subject, his breathing rate, position and physical activity. Of course further signal processing is required in order to distinguish between different types of movements and to classify them.

Abstract: Nowadays the technologies aimed at improving the quality of life of people affected by visual diseases are quite common; e.g., devices to support walking or reading. Surprisingly; there is a lack of innovative technologies aimed at helping visually impaired athletes during physical activities. An example is represented by blind runners who need to be physically linked to a sighted guide by means of non-stretchable tethers during races; with consequent limitations in terms of performance and independence. This paper wants to investigate the possibility of realizing a system able to guide blind runners along a complex path; paving the way for the realization of an innovative device designed to improve their independence during training or competitions. The system consists of: (1) A mobile unit; which is placed before the runner and generates two “electromagnetic walls” delimiting the way; (2) a receiving unit (worn by the athlete) that provides vibro-tactile warnings every time the user is going outside the safe area so as to encourage him to move toward the central position. The feasibility and the utility of the system proposed are demonstrated by means of tests carried out thanks to the collaboration of a blind volunteer.

Abstract: In this paper, a new electro-magnetic sensing system for the indoor measurement of respiration rate and subject position is presented. The measurement system has been especially conceived for use in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications; therefore, a specifically designed, radiation element has been designed and realized in order to be easily installed at home. The measurement principle is based on the measurement of the reflection coefficient S11 which is operated when a frequency sweep signal is transmitted by the radiation element placed in front of the subject. S11 values are related to the distance from the reflecting object (the subject) and can be consequently related to his/her respiration activity and position. A mathematical description of the algorithm for the extraction of the aimed information, the experimental set-up and some results, obtained in a real scenario (private apartment), are reported. These results clearly show the ability of the proposed sensing system to detect the presence of the subject, to measure the respiration rate and to determine his/her position within the observed environment. The proposed solution presents therefore most of the required features in order to be used for home monitoring and AAL applications.

Abstract: The source stirring technique for reverberation chambers (RC) is obtained by several monopole antennas located on the chamber walls. The stirring action is accomplished subsequently feeding each antenna pairs covering all possible combinations. Antennas are fed by real generators and their length is not negligible with respect to the wavelength. An efficient way, that improves the modal series convergence, is presented to compute the electromagnetic field inside the large shielded room. Results are checked by means of typical RC parameters such as the cumulative distribution function (CDF), the polar plot of each field components and field uniformity. Out-of-phase dipole feeding allows to improve field uniformity especially in the lower frequency range.

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The aim of this work is to implement a mixed approach able to provide an efficient time domain solution of the electromagnetic (EM) coupling between an antenna and an obstacle distant few meters away. The idea is to divide the problem into a small number of less complex sub-problems exploiting the advantage of solving some of them by analytical models and the others by numerical codes. To this end, the electric field radiated by the antenna just close to the object has been sampled in time and spatial domains by means of a small number of plane waves; for each plane wave impinging on the object, the scattering problem has been solved by a commercial code; finally, the total echo has been obtained as analytical summation of all the scattering contributions at the antenna position. The resulting echo has been compared with that coming from a full-wave numerical solution, whereas the voltage signal received at the antenna port has been compared with that measured by experimental investigations. The positive results obtained demonstrate the possibility of using the tool to effectively study obstacle detection problems, for example as support to the design of an EM obstacles detector to improve visually impaired mobility.

Abstract: The safety area around the applicator of a high current pulse generator, able to magnetically stimulate the human heart, is characterized in terms of allowable induced current. The magnetic field produced by the adopted coil is computed using a complete analytical model to determine the limit area allowed for medical operators. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection recommendation is adopted for the occupational exposure limits. The presence of a ferrite tile close to the stimulation coil is also investigated. The ferrite tile enhances the field level on the patient side, making the magnetic stimulation more efficient. Experimental validation demonstrates the model's reliability.

Abstract: The non-contact measurement of the respiration rate of a subject offers several interesting applications in hospital as well as in domestic environments. The use of electromagnetic waves has been proved to be a feasible approach to this purpose. In this paper, authors present a novel measurement method, based on the transmission of a frequency sweep and the measurement of the reflection coefficient (S11), to determine the respiration rate of the monitored subject without contact. The proposed method places itself at the half-way between continuous wave (CW) and ultra wide band (UWB) techniques, offering some advantages of both methods and improving its feasibility. Experimental tests have been carried out on voluntary subjects simultaneously measured with two reference systems in order to compare respiration frequency values. Results show a good correlation between the data measured during tests, proving that the proposed method is a valid approach to the issue of the non-contact assessment of the respiration rate both in clinical and domestic environments.

Abstract: The design of an electromagnetic (EM) novel device to be used as travel support to the mobility of visually impaired people is presented in this work. In particular, a preliminary study has been carried out using laboratory instrumentation in order to investigate the performances of an EM system in detecting obstacles located along user pathway, both in indoor and outdoor cluttered environments. Moreover, a portable EM system prototype has been realized and tested with a blind volunteer in order to both demonstrate potentialities and highlight peculiarities of using EM pulses for this application. The proposed EM system accomplishes most of the operative requirements of electronic travel aids for visually impaired subjects and can even provide additional information on obstacles, as for example height from the ground, distance and position.

Abstract: Respiration activity is one of the fundamental functions of the human being (also known as vital signs) which is monitored for health purposes. Often it is required to operate the sensing of the respiration activity out of hospitals or clinical environments and without contact with the patient and possibly from a distance i.e. for the home monitoring of patients or for the ambient assisted living, AAL). Unfortunately, at present the sensing apparatus for respiration monitoring purposes are mainly based on the use of contact methods (chest belt, nasal temperature transducers, etc.) which appear to be not suited for such tasks. In this paper, the authors propose a novel approach based on the use of electromagnetic sensing of the respiration activity of subject. The proposed approach provide a remote, continuous measurement of the inspiration/expiration acts of a subject without requiring a contact; these features of the proposed system are suited for domestic monitoring and AAL.

Abstract: This contribution is part of a wider research project whose final aim is the realization of a small EM sensing system for non-contact monitoring of respiration activity in indoor environments. The paper presents the design of an optimized radiating element that satisfies challenging requirements: good impedance matching over a wide frequency bandwidth (3-5 GHz), directive radiation pattern, small dimensions (in order to reduce its invasiveness) and low cost for realization. In detail, an antenna model already existing in literature has been optimized and adapted to this specific application using a full wave numerical simulator. Finally a first antenna prototype has been realized and experimentally tested to compare the measured parameters with the simulated results.

Abstract: In this paper, an electromagnetic sensing system for the measurement of the respiratory activity is presented. The aims are to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach and in particular to evaluate the effect on the measured signal of the distance between the subject and the sensing apparatus. Moreover an electromagnetic model of the system, including the monitored subject, is proposed as a tool to solve the problem of selecting working parameters for system design. The sensing system is based on the measurement of the phase variation of the reflection coefficient caused by the respiratory activity. The phase signal compared with the thorax displacement measured by a reference instrument shows a high correlation (R =0.97) for different subject postures (sitting, standing and lying) and a reduction of the signal amplitude with the distance (-0.11 dB/cm) is reported. The numerical simulations performed on a wide band highlight the frequencies where the method exhibits the highest sensitivity to thorax movements. The sensitivity can be further improved by reducing the antenna beamwidth. Despite the signal amplitude reduction, the proposed system makes it possible to correctly operate at distances up to 2.5 m.

Abstract: This work is included in a project of ASI, which involves several Italian entities, universities and companies, called NIMURRA, that stands for “Non Invasive Monitoring by Ultra wide band Radar of Respiratory Activity of people inside a spatial environment”. It regards the placement of a UWB radar inside a spatial module to obtain information on the respiration of astronauts. Using a pulse characterized by a very wide bandwidth in a highly resonant environment, which contains electronic instrumentation, it is necessary to consider EMC issues relating to radiated emissions, but also with regard to the susceptibility of the UWB radar itself. The objective of the work is to give some useful information to the designer of the monitoring system that take into account the EMC problem. In particular considering the radiated emission and susceptibility problem we obtain some information on the maximum input signal that can be radiated by the system, and to the maximum electric field level that the system has to tolerate in order to fulfill the EMC standard.

Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding)
Abstract: The paper describes a set of measurements carried out in a reverberating chamber and aimed to characterize the field statistics when the source stirring technique is applied. Twenty antennas are used to build up the radiating system and to cover the operational frequency range 1 GHz – 3 GHz. The quartiles of the received power distributions are analyzed over a wide frequency range showing satisfactory matching with the expected theoretical distribution. Polar plots and the cumulative distribution functions (CDF) of the rectangular and total field components are also checked at several frequencies. Finally, the uniformity analysis, applied to a typical working volume, shows that the array is able to perform a source stirring of the RC field that fulfills the IEC 61000-4-21 requirements.

Abstract: The paper describes the design and testing of a radiating structure developed to reverberate electromagnetic fields in shielded chambers. The radiating system consists of a set of conical broadband wire antennas, adapted to cover the operational frequency range of 1 to 3 GHz. Twenty antennas are used to build up the structure and field stirring is achieved by switching on 190 different combinations that generate field statistics and field uniformity quite similar to those of a mechanically stirred reverberation chamber (RC). All the measurements prescribed by standard and literature were carried out to test the stirring capabilities of the radiating structure, and to assess that the RC field fulfills the IEC 61000-4-21 requirements.

Abstract: An electromagnetic model of an induction cooking system and its numerical solution are proposed. The analytical approach for the whole system is based on a field theory concept. Currents in each part of the system, as well as the electric and magnetic fields generated by these currents are defined and composed into a system representing the material constitutive equations. A numerical solution of the electromagnetic problem that provides all the electric and magnetic currents of the system is achieved by application of the moment method. Finally, the proposed model has been validated experimentally by measuring the input impedance at the feeding port and comparing it with the calculated values.

Abstract: The use of electromagnetic (EM) fields for obstacle detection to aid mobility of visually impaired people is presented in this paper. The method proposed is based on the launch of EM pulses and on the measurement of the reflected signal which explores a region in front of the user of about 3 m. A laboratory system is set up, its performances (detecting the presence and the distance of obstacles) are investigated, and the measurements are compared with the data measured by an ultrasonic obstacle detection system. Results show that, with the EM system, all the obstacles tested (up to a minimum size of 3 cm $times$ 3 cm, at a distance of 3 m) are correctly detected, as well as some specific targets (a chain, a pole, etc.) that are not visible by the ultrasonic system. The EM system has been tested in indoor and outdoor cluttered scenarios at the presence of real obstacles (single and multiple), and in all cases, it detects their presence with a signal-to-noise ratio ranging from 10 to 23 dB. Despite the use of a laboratory system, still not specifically designed for daily use, this paper demonstrates the possibility of adopting EM field pulses for obstacle detection, highlighting advantages with respect to ultrasonic systems and addressing future research activity to design an improved ad hoc EM system.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to highlight the paramount importance of the availability of an electromagnetic model for the design of system based on electromagnetic radiation for search and rescue operation of humans buried under different materials as debris, and snowslide. In this contribution the monitoring of the breathing activity of a man buried into a homogeneous lossy medium has been analyzed. The geometry of the scenario and the body have been simplified in order to model the electromagnetic problem of the interaction of the body and impinging field in a closed-form. In spite of the simple formulation the results are satisfactory and show how some a priori important system requirements can be obtained, as for example the most suitable working frequency range. The model is able to predict the sensitiveness in terms of phase and module variations depending on the scenario.

Abstract: The paper presents some simulated and measured results concerning the electromagnetic field caused by an ultra wide band (UWB) source located inside a spacecraft module. The UWB signal is intentionally radiated for non-contact detection of human vital signals. The main goal of the work is to address the EMI problems caused by such a radiated field into the spacecraft equipment during the design stage of detection system. This allows the optimization of power level, waveforms and radiating antenna properties. Results given by simulations are experimentally validated showing good agreement.

Abstract: The aim of the paper is the development of an accurate numerical model to compute the current density flowing through the heart of a virtual human body, and induced by an external electric or magnetic excitation. The model has been experimentally validated and then applied to investigate the main characteristics of the heart magnetic stimulation. This has been carried out by comparing the current density induced in the cardiac region by an external magnetic pulse with the corresponding quantity due to the more traditional electric source. Magnetic stimulation is studied because it offers some advantages: in fact, compared with the electrical stimulation, this technique is contactless and might allow the stimulation of a dressed patient. The design constraint of the whole system is represented by the current density, whose waveform and intensity are a compromise between the strength of the magnetic induction field and the pulse rise time.

Self-Consistent Analysis of Cylindrical Plasma Antennas
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION

Abstract: Plasma can be used to create antennas: its conductivity is given by free electrons resulting from gas ionization. This process is obtained with the application of an intense electromagnetic field to a glass tube filled with a low pressure gas. The pump signal needed for ionization and gas discharge parameters have to be carefully chosen in order to optimize plasma antenna design and realization; in particular discharge working conditions have to be defined to obtain the desired antenna properties in terms of efficiency and effective length. For this purpose a self-consistent numerical model of a surface wave driven plasma column has been developed. This tool helps to understand the physical aspects involved in the problem and allows a parametric investigation to be carried out

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a novel measurement method for the detection of the respiratory activity (respiration rate and respiration period) based on the use of a continuous wave (6 GHz) microwave radar reflectometry technique. The paper aims, in particular, to explore the effect on the signal quality of distance D between the sensing apparatus and the patient. The measurement method proposed is based on the measurement of the phase variation of the reflection coefficient (S11) signal measured by a vectorial network analyzer connected to a double ridge horn antenna. The S11 signal has been compared with the synchronous acquisition made by means of a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDVi), measuring the thorax oscillations caused by the respiratory activity. Both signals have been filtered in order to eliminate the effect of high frequency disturbances (heartbeat) and noise. Results show an high correlation between respiration peaks measured with the proposed system and with LDVi; a reduction of the amplitude of the S11 signal phase (as well as the SNR) is reported in correspondence to an increasing of the distance D (0.11 dB/cm). Tests have been repeated for standing as well as for sitting condition of the subject confirming a better signal quality for the later. Despite the fact that S11 phase variation and SNR are reduced by the distance D, in our experiments, it is still possible to correctly measure the respiration period up to 2.5 m. Data measured show that the reflectometeric approach can be used to monitor at distance with sufficient high SNR (18 dB at 2.5 m) the respiration activity of a subject without the need of a direct contact with the subject skin by means of electrods of sensing belts.

Experimental characterization of a surfaguide fed plasma antenna
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Abstract - The possibility of using a surfaguide device as plasma source for plasma antenna application has been experimentally investigated. The surfaguide was optimized, realized and used for the ignition of a plasma column to be used as a radiating structure: the coupling with the radiated signal network and plasma antenna efficiency were measured showing that a surfaguide can be effectively used to create and sustain the plasma conductive medium. A plasma diagnostic technique was also developed to evaluate the plasma column length and plasma conductivity with respect to the power supplied. These measurements highlighted that plasma antenna properties are strongly affected by the pump signal and therefore this signal has to be optimized in order to have the highest conductivity.
