Extended Hamming product codes analytical performance evaluation for low error rate applications

Abstract: In this paper, we study product codes based on extended Hamming codes. We focus on their performance at low error rates, which are important for wireless multimedia applications. We present the basis and a complete set of techniques which allows one to analytically evaluate this performance without resorting to extremely long simulations. We present new theoretical results concerning the popular approximation where the bit error rate is nearly equal to the frame error rate times the ratio of the minimum distance to the codeword length. We prove that: 1) binary codes with a transitive automorphism group satisfy this approximation with equality; and 2) extended Hamming product codes belong to this class. Closed-form expressions for their dominant multiplicity values are derived. Analytical curves are plotted, discussed, and validated by comparison with iterative decoding. This analytical approach is then extended to both shortened and punctured codes, which are important for practical design. The first case is solved by applying the extended MacWilliams identity to the dual codes. For punctured codes, we present a new analytical approach for estimating their average performance using a “random” puncturer.

Abstract: This paper presents a possible implementation of a Packet over very high bit rate digital subscriber line protocol with reduced impact of the overhead when transmitting Internet protocol packets. The proposal relates to some shared opinions about the inefficiency of the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) layer when used to transport this kind of packets, and it is based on proper adaptation of previous recommendations and standards. It is numerically shown that a significant throughput increase is achieved when the new protocol is used in place of the current ATM adaptation layer type 5/ATM protocol.

Abstract: A performance comparison is developed between a chaotic communication system and a spread spectrum system with similar features in terms of bandwidth and transceiver structure but based on more conventional Gold sequences. Comparison is made in the presence of noise and multipath contributions which degrade the channel quality. It is shown that, because of its more favourable correlation properties, the chaotic scheme exhibits lower error rates, at a parity of the bandwidth expansion factor. The same favourable correlation properties are also used to explain and show, through a numerical example, the benefits of chaotic segments in a multi-user environment.

Abstract: The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) standards establish a common framework for space telemetry, command and tracking, and covers many applications like deep space and near-Earth missions, Earth exploration, tracking and data relay satellites. In this paper, we present a study on the symbol synchronization properties of the turbo code scheme recently adopted as one of the channel coding options for CCSDS telemetry recommendations. An extensive analysis is presented for transition/symbol probability, run-length distribution and other parameters of key importance for synchronization recovery. All the code rates achievable by the examined turbo code are considered and analysed. We demonstrate that the behaviour of the CCSDS turbo code is generally good, satisfactorily matched with practical requirements, and better than more conventional solutions included in the previous standards. Some critical conditions are also discussed, their meaning interpreted and suitable countermeasures proposed.

Abstract: A general method for designing multilayered WDM optical networks, based on the combined use of single- and multi-hop connection modes, is presented. It takes into account variable values for the number of users and wavelengths in each cluster. Closed form expressions are derived for the transmission capacity and the optimum number of channels for intra-cluster communications, either in the case of uniform or non-uniform traffic distribution. The analytical approach is particularly useful in the presence of constraints on the number of wavelengths, due to technological limits or non-linear phenomena, when sub-optimal solutions must be necessarily addressed. The proposed method is integrated with the adoption of well-known selection procedures, like simulated annealing or genetic algorithms, to reduce the computational effort.

Abstract: This work presents an electrocardiogram ECG data reduction method based on Walsh spectrum double logarithmic quantization. The technique is theoretically justified for a simulated ECG and its practical efficiency confirmed using MIT/BIH arrhythmia database signals. By classifying a “good” compression as one with MSE 0.005 for 1 : 1 spectral reduction, a normal/abnormal ECG mix returned an 87% success rate for waveforms stored with 8– to 11–bit resolution.

Abstract: The authors present a survey of interaction mechanisms among spatial solitons at different wavelengths. It is shown that such mechanisms offer fascinating perspectives for realizing all-optical switches and routers. The main interest for these components is in WDM networks, that represent one of the most practicable way to utilize the huge bandwidth offered by fiber optics. Numerical examples are given, as the result of efficient simulations, that provide useful guidelines for design of the proposed components.

Abstract: This paper presents the theory and modeling of an all-optical device which realizes self-routing of waves at different wavelengths. The device exploits spatial soliton interaction in a Kerr-like nonlinear medium and can be used in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with fixed tuned receivers and tunable transmitters. Interaction is governed by four-wave mixing (FWM) that produces the desired effects under suitable excitation conditions. Several numerical examples are given, which highlight the importance of an optimum choice for the spectrum of wavelengths.

Abstract: The efficiency of ECG compression is confirmed using double logarithmic quantisation of the Walsh spectrum by applying it to practical signals sourced from the MIT/BIH arrhythmia database. By classifying a compression procedure as ‘good’ when its MSE for a spectral reduction of 1:l is smaller than 0.005, the normal/abnormal ECG mix returned an overall 87% success rate for waveforms stored with between 8 and 11 bit resolution.

Abstract: We propose a modification of the perfect shuffle connectivity graph used in optical networks, which ensures the balance of the traffic load on the WDM channels. Performance of a hybrid scheme for optical CDMA

Abstract: A hybrid mo-demodulation approach, fully insensitive to the phase noise induced by the sources, is described for CDMA applications at optical frequencies. It is analytically demonstrated that, using bipolar codes in conjunction with polarisation modulation, the considered system can improve the performance of coherent schemes with not negligible laser linewidths, as well as the performance of more conventional noncoherent schemes based on intensity modulation and unipolar codes.

Abstract: The authors present an analytical model for the closed form evaluation of relevant parameters characterising the process at the output of a statistical multiplexer. Compared with previous approaches, the proposed method is able to additionally describe transient conditions and, through the autocorrelation function and the mean length of adjacent packets sequences, to evaluate the extent of the correlation in the output process as a function of that in the input traffic, also taking into account the effect due to a finite buffer size. The reliability of the model is tested, under different operation conditions, by comparison with simulated results, showing everywhere an excellent agreement.

All-optical polarization modulator based on spatial soliton coupling

Abstract: The possibility of realizing an all-optical polarization modulator is theoretically demonstrated. Basic device exploits the cross-phase modulation effect involving spatial solitons in a Kerr-like nonlinear material. It is shown that a weak wave (modulating signal) can be used to control a stronger wave (pump signal), in such a way to obtain a polarization switch, if their input phase difference is exactly equal to 90° and the two waves exhibit mutual orthogonal polarizations. Since the required relative phase may be difficult and sometimes impossible to maintain, an improved solution is then proposed which eliminates any effect due to random phase difference between the colliding solitons. It is based on the adoption of a suitable control device employing two additional nonlinear blocks excited by solitons with equal amplitude and linear polarization. The resulting field is then subjected to self-phase modulation. The structure is completed by a cascade of linear and nonlinear waveguides acting as proper soliton filters. This way, the behavior as an all-optical polarization modulator is ensured, even in the most critical input conditions, corresponding to a phase difference of 12.5° for our choice of the physical and geometrical parameters.

Abstract: A detailed analysis for a variety of transmission formats suitable for photon communication systems is presented. More precisely, starting from the basic orthogonal pulse position modulation (PPM), here assumed as a reference, several alternative modulation schemes are discussed. They can be seen as extensions of the basic format or, equivalently, as particular cases of the most complete alphabet obtained by considering all the possible combinations of high and low levels in a transmission organized over slotted time intervals. The analysis is developed in comparative terms, looking at the three parameters which are usually invoked for performance evaluation, i.e. transmission capacity, cut-off rate and bit error rate. Closed form expressions are given in all the examined cases, stressing the role, as figures of merit, of the transmission efficiency and the bandwidth expansion factor. At a parity of the latter parameter, it is shown that the performance of basic PPM can be improved, even significantly, by resorting to the alternative transmission formats. In particular, they maintain the spectral occupancy within acceptable limits, whereas the bit error rate can be lowered using alphabet puncturation or asymmetric error correcting codes.

Abstract: A new self-routing packet switching fabric architecture is presented, which avoids the use of electronic logic. This can be obtained by adopting a random routing procedure which can be simply implemented on available photonic devices. The results achieved for a 16×16 switching fabric demonstrate that either multicast or point-to-point traffic can be handled by the proposed switch indifferently.

Abstract: We present a simple model for the global performance evaluation of a packet switching network. Through a detailed analytical treatment, a set of formulae is derived which allow a compact and reliable evaluation of the most significant statistical properties of the network, such as the arrival probabilities, the queue states distribution and the mean utilizations of the links. Starting from the knowledge of these quantities, the network can be characterized also taking into account the mutual interaction between different nodes. An example is given with reference to a mesh-connected structure.

Abstract: A novel method is proposed for the analysis of transients in dielectric guide, e.g., when excited by a Gaussian beam pulsed in time and modulated by a cosine waveform. This approach, utilizing the full modal spectrum of the guide, results more reliable than existing numerical techniques, while, by virtue of its analytical nature, greatly reducing the computational complexity of the problem.

Abstract: The spatial dependence properties of the gain offered by long erbium-doped amplifiers in a soliton transmission system are accurately investigated. The possibility of reaching a prefixed value of gain with a variety of different configurations is proved, showing that significant deviations from the ideal behaviour are possible in principle. Their effect on the shape of propagating soliton is also discussed.

Abstract: A concatenation of Reed-Solomon and repetition codes with symbol interleaving is considered for applications in which the message length is limited and the probability of incorrect received symbols is high. An analysis is developed with reference to a Packet Radio Network, using Spread Spectrum modulation, simultaneously affected by random errors and burst errors. The results obtained are compared with those derived by numerical simulation. It is shown that a canonical formulation can be used for the case of full interleavers, but it cannot be applied to encoding schemes with partial interleavers. In the latter situation a modified, improved, approach is proposed.

Abstract: The rate equations which rule the evolution of the signals inside an active fiber and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are jointly solved in order to obtain an accurate characterization of the pulse propagation. The exact behaviour of the gain is taken into account so obtaining useful informations also in the perspective of system design when a cascade of passive and active fibers is considered.
