Abstract: The influence of silane-based hydrophobic agents, added to concrete as chemical admixtures, on the corrosion resistance of galvanized steel reinforcement embedded in concrete was studied. Sound or deliberately pre- cracked concrete specimens, with 0.5 or 1 mm wide crack, were manufactured with w/c of 0.45 and 0.75, both in the presence and in the absence of a silane admixture. The specimens were exposed to wet-dry cycles in a 10% NaCl aqueous solution. The results, in terms of electrochemical measurements, as well as visual and metallographic observations carried out on the galvanized steel reinforcement removed from the specimens, showed that the hydrophobic concrete is able to protect galvanized steel reinforcement from corrosion even in the presence of cracks in the concrete cover, especially when a high w/c is used.

Abstract: The corrosion resistance of cracked concrete specimens reinforced with bare, stainless, or galvanized steel plates are compared with the corrosion behavior of bare steel reinforcement embedded in concrete specimens coated with a flexible polymer-cement based mortar either before or after specimen cracking and with those related to bare and galvanized reinforcement embedded in hydrophobic concrete. The specimens were exposed to increasingly aggressive environments: forty days of full immersion in a 3.5% sodium chloride aqueous solution were followed by five months of wet-dry cycles using a 10% sodium chloride aqueous solution. The results for the full immersion condition show that negligible corrosion rates were detected in all the cracked specimens, except those treated with the flexible polymer-cement mortar before specimen cracking and the hydrophobic concrete specimens especially when bare steel reinforcement are adopted. On the other hand, high corrosion rates were measured in all cracked specimen exposed to wet-dry cycles, except for those with stainless steel reinforcement and those coated with the flexible polymer-cement mortar after specimen cracking, as was expected, and, surprisingly, for the galvanized steel reinforcement embedded in hydrophobic concrete.

Abstract: The development of self-compacting concrete is considered as a milestone achievement in concrete technology due to several performance advantages and to an improved sustainability. In this work, some self-compacting concrete mixtures were prepared by adding an acrylic based superplasticizer. Limestone powder, fly ash or rubble powder (obtained by suitably treating rubble from building demolition) or even ash from municipal solid waste incineration were used as a mineral addition, in order that adequate theological properties of the self-compacting concrete were ensured in the absence of a viscosity modifying agent. In some cases, recycled instead of natural aggregates were used by substituting either the coarse or the fine aggregate fraction. The recycled aggregates were directly supplied by an industrial crushing plant in which debris from building demolition are suitably selected, ground, cleaned and sieved. Then, important properties, related to both fresh and hardened concrete, were evaluated. The results obtained showed that self-compacting concrete can be successfully developed by incorporating both recycled aggregates and waste powders, thus contributing to sustainability issues.

Abstract: The feasibility of re-using GRP industrial waste to produce blended cements was investigated. Firstly, the waste material was characterized and then it was added to standard mortars as cement replacement at dosage rates of 10% - 20% - 40% by cement weight. The addition appeared chemically compatible with cement and GRP could replace up to 15% by weight of the cement in order to assure the mechanical strength threshold prescribed by actual cement standards. The new "GRP blended cements", even if showing significantly lower volumic mass and mechanical strength, seem to be able to confer higher deformability to the cementitious products manufactured by them. Moreover, since the GRP waste did not show any binding capacity, the addition lead to an increase in the water/cement, thereby raising the porosity of the manufactured elements. However, unexpectedly, capillary water absorption and drying shrinkage of these elements resulted lower than those of the reference mortar without any GRP addition, showing in this way enhanced durability.

Thaumasite: evidence for incorrect intervention in masonry restoration

Abstract: Thaumasite, as well as ettringite, are compounds which are increasingly found as deterioration products of cementitious materials subjected to sulfate attack. Thaumasite, and especially ettringite, have been abundantly reported in relation to concrete deterioration as well as, more recently, to the deterioration of cementitious mortars for masonry and for plasters. In particular, the problem appears serious in the field of repair of historical buildings, where the cementitious mortar can easily deteriorate just because of the formation of ettringite and thaumasite. However, although thaumasite is responsible for deterioration, in most cases, it may not be detected since it can be partially or almost completely removed by atmospheric agents. Many causes can be responsible for the presence of sulfates in masonry. At the same time, mortar and plaster are, in most cases, sources of calcium carbonate. Moreover, masonry is typically a porous material, which can be easily permeated by water, either rising groundwater or falling rainwater. Therefore, when cement based materials, which are in turn sources of calcium aluminates and calcium silicates, are used as binders, all of the ingredients necessary to cause thaumasite formation are present. Consequently, a compatibility issue emerges, which if not kept into proper account, will lead sooner or later to ineffective intervention.

Abstract: Recycled aggregates used in combination with high-volume fly ash is an example of sustainable construction material because it represents a judicious use of resources by recycling by-products, that results in a lower environmental impact through reduced carbon dioxide emissions and reduced natural aggregate extraction from quarries. Furthermore, the related concrete mixtures yield satisfactory mechanical performance. The goal of the experimental work reported here was to investigate the effect of recycled aggregate and/or fly ash on carbonation and chloride penetration depth, as well as the effect on corrosion behavior of either bare or galvanized steel in cracked reinforced concrete. The concrete mixture contained equal amounts of fly ash and cement. The results show that the introduction of the sustainability concept in concrete technology by using recycled aggregate and/or fly ash did not cause any deleterious effects on durability of reinforced concrete specimens in terms of both chloride and carbon dioxide penetration, and reinforcement corrosion in cracked concrete.

Abstract: The paper presents a review of hydrophobic coatings and admixtures with particular emphasis on silanes and siloxanes. The adsorption mechanism, the level of hydrophobic activity and qualification and evaluation of hydrophobic surface coatings are discussed. The use of hydrophobic agent as a concrete admixture is also examined. The early experimental results in the use of hydrophobic agents reveal that the use of the material is beneficial in corrosion prevention and mitigation of alkali-aggregate reactivity.

Abstract: A series of dialkyldimethylammonium bromides bearing a 4,4'-oxynitrostilbene calamitic core at the end of one of the alkyl chains was synthesized. Its thermotropic liquid crystal behaviour was examined using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. An ordered smectic phase was identified in which the ionic ammonium bromide groups are arranged according to a square two-dimensional crystal lattice, and the oxynitrostilbene cores are tilted away from the layer normal by an angle of 54 degrees. This novel smectic structure is discussed in terms of structural compatibility of the smectic sublayers: the sublayers of the ionic groups and calamitic cores adapt their internal structure in order to become adequate for coherent superposition in a smectic structure.
